This reminds me of an old joke. A customer goes to the ticket counter in Chicago and while purchasing a ticket to Miami he asked for one of his bags to go to New York, another to go to San Francisco and a third to Seattle. The ticket agent says, “Sir, we can’t do that”. The man says, “Why not? You did it last time I flew this airline”.

Several years ago they were informed that their respective employers were outsourcing the baggage handling to a third party and their employment with the company would be terminated on X date but they would have interviews set up with the new company for hiring with the new company. The new company wanted to cut their wages by 50% and no benefits for 6 months and no 401k. Needless to say nobody took them up on their generous offer and on X date it was a total zoo.

I was traveling in an Air Force KC-135 coming from Spain to Grissom AFB IN. We were required to land in Bangor Maine for customs for some reason. They made us unload the baggage, load it on the cart, then unload the cart onto the baggage belt, then go into the terminal, claim our baggage, go thru customs, then reverse the procedure to get the bags back onto the aircraft. A few days later the base got a bill from Bangor for baggage handling. Our commander who helped unload and reload the aircraft, sent them a letter explaining what they could do with their bill and why. He was a great officer.

One morning, I was the first flight out and it was snowing pretty hard. I taxied out to the deice pad and once I finally got someone working the truck on the radio, they said we would have to wait an hour for the truck to warm up since we didn’t let them know ahead of time that we would need to be deiced. Out of (literally) hundreds of flights, I only lost one bag. Back in 1973, I was flying to LAX via Anchorage with a couple of suitcases and a soft sided garment bag that had among other things, my Dress blues (USAF) and a cherished, "good luck" sweater When I got to LA, there was no bag. No problem, I filed a lost bag report (the first and only time I took out travel insurance), and enjoyed my vacation back home. All the wile, the airline (Northwest Orient) searched and searched for my luggage, with zero luck. Back in Anchorage, I stopped at the terminal coffee shop for breakfast, (same one I stopped at on my way out) and was telling the waitress about my bag. She told me they had a blue hand-up bag in the coat rack that had been there for several weeks, I looked at the bag, felt the bag, and asked if I could open it. I was told I could, and was more than just a little surprised when I can my name tag on the dress blues inside. For 4 weeks, my bag sat in an area where ANYONE could have just picked it up an walked away with... different times, definitely different morals. I took my bag, cancelled my claim, and never lost another bag. Oh, and I still have that "lucky sweater".

I reckon that was the Luckiest Sweater that ever existed ! As a young adult, I lived near a small city and we had very restricted trading hours back then (1980's) . Some suburbs chose Thursday to be their one allowed Late Night (up to 9pm) but on this occasion I was in the Central City (?downtown?) area which was Late Night Friday. I stopped by a Camera and photo processing shop right on the edge of the Central City (Colombo Street, just North of Cathedral Square).. I was talking with the assistant there and I must have dropped off a film or some negatives for "one hour" processing and then wandered around some other shops then went back later in the evening. I went to pay and realised I had left my wallet sitting on the shop counter all along. Yes the counter top was cluttered with "stuff", something featured for sale, or maybe some small display boxes or something, but my wallet had sat there from my earlier visit until I arrived back at the shop, an hour or more later ! Plenty of other folks would have been wandering in and out looking and some doing business at the front counter. True our shops aren't as busy as London or New York, but I was still pretty happy to get my wallet, and money, back !

I travelled a LOT for work for 15 years. I always did carry on. I also checked on occasion and had one or two cases where stuff was delivered to a hotel for me. But the interesting experience was when a Flight Attendant spilled a coffee in my lap and after mopping up the worst of it I was able to go to the lav and change into dry clothes rather than sit in wet clothes for hours. The FAs were amazed that I was not upset over the accident ( and it was not hot enough to burn ) and understood that I was prepared when I came back in dry pants. I once took a flight from Baltimore to LAX, and in my checked bag was a legally declared in firearm, along with the requisite documentation. The clerk I checked my luggage in with had some kind of attitude upon my having advised her, like I am supposed to, that I had a firearm to declare inside my check bag. When I got to LAX the bag was missing. I checked with the lost baggage clerk and was told my bag was in Miami. He said it would be sent to LAX within the next few days. I then told him there was a declared firearm in the bag, and it would behoove him and his airline to get the bag to me as quickly as possible as I was certain his company would not want the news media to be telling folks they lost a bag known to have a legally checked firearm where nobody could confirm where the firearm was. Further, the state where I have my handgun carry conceal permit (NY) requires me to report a lost or stolen firearm within 24 hours of being aware of the loss/theft, or I could face some serious criminal charges. I then said we were in the first hour, and I needed that bag to be put into a safe area until it was on its way bac and in LAX within the next 23 hours. I had the bag, with the checked firearm, within 12 hours. I have no doubt the bag was intentionally sent to the wrong plane by the BWI baggage check chick who had a real attitude once I told her I was declaring a checked firearm. About 20 years ago, I was on an airplane departing from Houston to Costa Rica. I had a window seat and I observed a baggage cart full of duffel bags next to the airplane. As the airplane pulled away from the gate, I saw the same baggage cart still full of duffel bags on the tarmac. When the airplane landed, there was a disturbance in baggage claim. The duffel bags that were left behind in Houston belonged to a group of kayakers that were full of whitewater kayak gear, e.g., helmets, PFD, water shoes, paddles. I went to the agent and asked for my bag, and their response was "we don't know where it is, but we will get it to you". I finally received my bag 7 days into a 10 day holiday. The funniest thing was that my bag arrived with multiple airline tags on it showing where it had gone. That bag did more miles than I did that vacation. It had gone LHR -> DFW, DFW -> MIA, MIA ->SEA, SEA ->JFK, JFK ->LAX, LAX ->DFW.

Flying from Japan to Australia for a ten day stop before going on to LAX. I have had luggage lost many times as a frequent flyer so I had a change of clothes in my carry-on (backpack). Bags got stuck in Shanghai (actual), and never made it to Australia. Insult to injury was that Quantus forced me to check my backpack, due to weight (it was max carry-on sized), to LAX even after I explained that they already lost everything else. Backpack made it but it still took another week for my luggage to arrive at LAX after the ten days in Australia. I've since think heavily about what I wear on a plane with the idea I might have to wear it for a couple weeks.

When I managed a theatre, I learned to pay attention to whether the movie would sell out. When it appeared that the line was longer than could be accommodated I would immediately inform those likely to be impacted. I would also alert them if they might be seated too close to the screen or have to split up. Sometimes people who could get in would leave allowing those who were more eager to move up, but the key was to respect their time and manage expectations. It applies everywhere. Give bad news and solutions if any ASAP. The airline had a problem because they already waited, and if they offered passengers options, all the luggage would have to be sorted through and everyone would still be unhappy. The worst mess up was in failure to alert management to deliver the news upon arrival. I suppose they could have asked for a show of hands for cancelling the flight or going with a delay of luggage and let the passengers blame the majority vote if they didn’t like the outcome, but I’m not sure that would even be legal. It seems like safe transport of willing people is the priority over luggage.

I used to do lost luggage deliveries for the airlines. I'm going to say something that might be a surprise to some. Based on my experience with the airlines, I'd estimate that 90% of the time, your luggage isn't lost. They know exactly where it is. And it's usually on the next flight from your departure airport. In all my travels I've only had my luggage lost once. Last summer trying to get home after the SAS pilots union went on strike. We flew from Billund, Denmark to Munich, Munich to Newark and Newark to Cincinnati. Our luggage made it all the way to Newark before it was lost(delayed). It was delivered within 24 hours and the airline gave me $50.

Steve highlights the biggest frustration of lost luggage - the airline rarely has accurate information but act like they do. They also make whatever "promise" they think will get you out of their hair. You would think in this day and age of bar codes on all luggage that it would be better but that was not my experience. (I am retired now so I don't travel like I used to.) As Steve mentioned, it can be especially frustrating when you have travelled to another country. Overall, the airlines' records on luggage is pretty good BUT if you travel a lot you will have lost luggage at some point. All essentials plus at least one day's clothing should be in a carry on.

Delta also failed to book us seats on the local airline they contracted with or whatever to get us from Spain to Amsterdam on our way home, so we had to pay several thousand dollars to buy tickets in the airport just to leave the country on time to make our connection. My weird luggage story: back before I retired, I had to go to Vandenberg AFB - so flying United Express from COS to LAX to Santa Maria. COS to LAX was on an RJ, and I just had a carry-on - what is known as a gate-check (and fortunately a "personal item" with things like my contact lens stuff and acid reflux meds). At LAX, as you board the puddle jumper to go up to Santa Maria, you walk down the "jetway", and put your own bag on a rack next to the plane. When I got to Santa Maria, they put out all the gate-checked bags. Mine and a number of others' weren't there. We were all dumb-founded! They "lost" our gate-checked carry-ons, that were sitting right next to the plane! This was on a Monday, and they didn't manage to "find" my bag and deliver it to the hotel until Wednesday - saying the delay was because gate-checked bags aren't tracked through their "normal" luggage system. Of course I pointed out again finding the bag should have been easy, it was sitting on the rack that had been RIGHT NEXT TO THE FREAKING PLANE!

You can also buy an Apple Air Tag or something similar and stash it in your luggage so you can ensure WHERE you luggage is located so it doesn't end up in the "Lost and Found" and/or get sold by the Airlines. Putting the brake on the luggage wheels or removing them is also a good idea--especially on windy days as I've seen luggage fall off and roll away from the luggage vehicle. You can also find lists of what to place in your carry on bag to ensure you have some necessities in case you're stranded with/without your luggage.

@@BrettJackson1 The good it does is that you know or can follow where your luggage is located. You can tell the customer service people and they can communicate with the airport to ensure your luggage gets to you in a timely fashion (if possible). And, if not possible or the airline reports your luggage as "lost", you can notify them where your air tag says it is and hopefully get your luggage before it goes into the airport "Lost and Found" and get sold to someone for cheap. This means expensive luggage, expensive items, or irreplaceable items can hopefully make it back to you eventually. Reminds me of a person who had an expensive camera and lost it. Someone found the camera which was broken, but the sim card was viable. The sim card had the last pictures of the father of a family on vacation before he died. They were invaluable to the family.

I don't remember if it's per airline or per airport, but I think it's the former (probably both since some items may not have an airline ID on them). And they keep the items for a certain amount of time before they sell them online. In fact, someone (KZitem video) did a test about it and bought a specific piece of luggage, put an air tag in it, and just didn't pick it up from the turnstile. They then later saw it pop up on the online website and bought it. It was their luggage with all the specifics to ensure that it was the same exact piece. They also visited the "Lost and Found" location and saw all the luggage and items that had been "lost" that were also listed for sale on the website.

I’ve had some similar issues. At this point I don’t check my bag anymore. You can buy high quality backpacks that are the max size allowable by airlines for carry-on. They’re less likely to get checked (or even gate checked) than roll-aboard cases. I can fit 2 weeks of clothes in that bag. The heaviest it’s been is about 50lbs but I’m a big guy and can handle walking around with one of those. I have meds, toiletries, computer, and obviously clothes in the bag - all of which I need on my trips (business or leisure). So there’s rarely a need to check a bag. I always advise my friends and family to travel with a large carry-on instead of checking bags if they can avoid it.

Okay, so there was a case where a Canadian fight that was staying within Canada got rerouted to the US. In Canada, you can fly with cannabis, and if you have certain medical conditions, you can fly with LOTS of cannabis. Let's assume you pack the maximum amount of legal medical cannabis, 150g, it's in your checked luggage, and you land in the US. This happens in Canada a few years back, and I've always wondered what kind of recourse would you have? 1. Would the US be able to hold you liable for breaking drug laws? 2. If the cannabis got destroyed, would the airline have to reimburse you? 3. If the cannabis got destroyed, and you were stuck in the US, and you need it, again for medical reasons, what can be done, or what liability does the airline have? In general, if you run into a problem where you don't have access to your medicine, but you also require that medicine, how is that handled? I've been luck enough to never have my baggage lost, but I've run into several cases where I have to check my medication, so I've always wondered.

It was already waiting for us at the baggage office, which was actually much quicker than waiting for it to come out at baggage claim. This will be an unpopular comment, but it's true. Labor unions play a big role in the crappy service you get on airlines. Think of an attitude of "what's the bare minimum I have to do" and that pretty much sums up an attitude all too common in the airline rank and file. Why else would you fly a planeload of passengers to a destination and fail to mention none of their luggage is on board? Why else would you leave a plane sitting on the ramp, or in a seemingly endless holding pattern and never bother to tell anxious passengers what's going on? As a former pilot, I can tell you it's not because flying the plane requires their constant undivided attention, the plane is flying itself most of the time. It's the union mentality.

Mistakes happen; most people understand this. But don't LIE to me, & don't waste my precious vacation time with your dishonesty.

When I saw the title I thought it was going to be one or two from numerous flights. Was picking my jaw off the ground when I learned it was an entire plane. Holy *_BEEEEP!_*
