The region of Longroiva has been occupied since prehistoric times, with the Romans, Visigoths and Arabs settling there, whom the king of Leon, Ferdinand the Great, reconquered the region. Handed over to the Order of the Temple, by D. Afonso Henriques, around 1145. During the reign of D. It has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1967.
Fountain of the Council
Called the Roman Fountain by the population, but it is still from the 16th century, with Manueline architecture, with a structure in good stonework.
In the 19th century, the castle began to serve as a supply of stone for construction and the interior of the castle was transformed into a cemetery.
Conservation work has allowed parts of the walls and the Keep to still survive, which was one of the first to be built in Portugal.
The castle has been classified as a National Monument since 1943.
It is believed that the earliest human occupation of the site dates back to a pre-Roman hillfort, built between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC.
