My father and sister were in New York City once and someone accidentally dropped a suitcase down an escalator and two people completely unrelated to that incident started arguing intensely about it. On that same trip, on a subway, a woman accidentally hit another woman's foot with a stroller and the 2nd woman started yelling at the 1st woman that she was going to get a blood clot and die because of that stroller bump. That's what I think about when I hear New York City.

I was "allegedly" assaulted outside a bar one night. I hadn't even been there to drink, I was picking up a guy who had been drinking who called me and needed a ride. His angry ex gf saw him walk out with me, mouthed off, I said some smart ass shit back, and she walked out of the bar with her open beer (open container; illegal in Texas) and threw the bottle at my head. I put my arm up and it shattered against my elbow which immediately began to swell and I assumed I now had a broken arm when my fingers began to swell and I couldn't move them. An officer was standing feet from where this happened. I called his attention to the matter. He let this drunk angry girl get in the driver seat of her car and drive other people home then harassed me because I "reeked" of beer (no duh, not like one was just broken on me) and said it's not considered assault unless an officer witnesses it. Reporters are required by law (in the U.S.) to use non-confirmative statements such as “allegedly” to describe illegal activities of a person until it is convicted in court. It’s part of the laws relating to “innocent until proven guilty” and it’s the same reason we still hold trials for people who are blatantly guilty of the charges against them. My Roomate is a reporter and he tells me that most journalists go back and take out all the non-confirmative statements and replace them with confirmative statements after the trial takes place, so maybe that article will too if the charges stick.

@@XxShadow101xX I'm gonna get flack, but here is the other side of the coin. I used to help people as a kid, I liked helping people and would do it to just do it not thinking about consequences. I've been screamed at, hit, and threatened to be killed for helping scare a dude away who was beating someone. It turned out it was her boyfriend and they were arguing. I just wanted to help her (so I don't get white knight titled. I'm gay, so no benefits for helping her in the best case anyway). I've made a large girl cry when she bullied a dude by telling her off, then the dude comforting her and them walking away together. I've helped someone in a random fight to only have both of them try and jump my ass instead. I still would try, but I've got to know what's going on. Being a nice or selfless person doesn't help you, it's not harmless. People have been sued by a burglar for shooting them as they break and enter their home armed, the burglar.. sued them... for breaking in and getting shot... Some people can't be helped. My brother just left a relationship where his ex demonized him and told her family he beat her and threatened her baby. He took them in when she had nowhere to go with me and my whole family opposing it. He convinced us because she had a baby. She was here for months doing nothing, quitting her job, losing her insurance, and using all my brother money to run around town while leaving the baby to my mom. My brother would come off a 12 hour shift in a factory to take care of her kid while she would sit on her ass and play on a switch and make a mess. I lived here the whole time, I was here before my brother moved in. He never hit her, never abused her verbally. The most violent thing said was me angry but composed telling her to clean if she wasn't going to have a job because we couldn't clean up her mess and pay the rent while doing everything. She lied about him, hurt him, and he only was good to her until she showed her true colors. Then he asked her to leave. She tried using the kid to sob story my mom and dad, alligator tears screaming and sobbing. When it didn't work she called her brothers to come in with guns and move everything while lying to them in front of us. Being nice doesn't win you anything. It can cost you a lot, even your life. I often watch my 2 little cousins and they like to unintentionally hurt others/animals and they'll just go whoops and then laugh or shrughs uncomfortably. My mom doesn’t believe in apologies and often said she’ll never apologized to anything since what’s the point of it? It’s just words that don’t mean or do anything since what’s done is done. She says apologies don’t fix anything and she shouldn’t say it since she’s doesn’t care and it’s only for “delicate” and “sensitive” people to use since they’ cry over little things. She often tells me that if you apologize for everything then you’re weak and people will use you as a doormat. And as far I seen, in all my life she has never apologized to anything even when she’s in the wrong, and will yell at me when I ask her for one saying I’m wasting time since she’ll never apologize and it doesn’t mean it.

For me it was an unconscious thing, and I'm working to stop and listen more :) sometimes I interrupt bc im excited and will forget the thing im about to say, but i always ask the person to continue where they left off. I feel guilty about it all the time, especially when talking to new people who aren't used to me talking like that/a lot. My suggestion, when you get interrupted or someone makes the conversation about themselves, is to bring it up in a non-aggressive manor, and candidly tell them how you feel. There's a decent chance they're like me and are doing it unintentionally, and will work to stop it!

Very good example of someone that dances around answering any question was my high school counselor. Worst person. I visited her after school at one point to ask how many credits I had so I could plan other things since I was in and out of school due to mental/medical reasons. She went on this long spiel, and I spent a good 20 minutes trying to get just any answer, until I was forced to leave because my mother had been waiting for me outside. I was scolded because my mom thought there was no way I asked the right question if I didn't manage to get an answer. The next time I visited her was with my mom who then understood my problem. On the second visit she did the same thing, but this time targeting me directly on the fact I was having to be in and out of school due to my issues. I asked her how many credits I have. "Have you brushed your hair today?" I told her I didn't see the importance. "Why are you wearing what you're wearing, you'd feel a lot better if you dressed in a way that made you confident and look good." I had to explain I was dressing comfortably and didn't have the energy to put a lot of time in my appearance, and I was literally 1000% fine with that, minus with what she said. "Do you take showers in the morning or night? Maybe you're having these issues because you're not willing to change for the better. The world doesn't revolve around you." I still hate this woman.

its just the nature of prevention. prevention is a concept that exists because human error also exists. thinking that you can decide when you do or dont need to practice prevention is stupid for two reasons: one being that if you are actually wrong about a thing you might still believe you arent, because in real life people are not cartoon villains, and people who think the wrong thing do so because they _dont realize it is wrong,_ and that you dont actually necessarily need truth to be confident. the second reason it's stupid to try and avoid using prevention is... it literally cant hurt to use it. if you call a guy who very clearly did a shooting a suspect, and that person actually did do the shooting? _they still get their dues._ it doesnt affect anything. the only difference is that if you were to call it early and say that the guy definitely for sure did it, you're taking a gamble on that lets say .000001 whatever fuckoff chance that maybe all the evidence is faked somehow. sure, that seems like an astronomically low number and it shouldnt matter, but a number of LITERALLY zero is still lower than that, why why even bother in the first place? its just prevention.

if you believe that a crime is so blatantly a certain way, you should be content to let the cards fall as they may instead of demanding it get called early, because if you're that sure of it, there should be no possible way that an investigation is going to get it wrong. you stand to gain everything and lose nothing.

Something to note about "one uping" is that a lot of people, namely those with Autism and sometimes ADHD, will tell their own stories/experiences with a certain topic as a way of reinforcing "hey, I know what you're going through because I've been through it too". I do it a lot. It's hard for us to recognize that that's not what people need to hear, and what sounds token to is are often the correct responses, such as "man, that sucks". So it's not always to make it about themselves, sometimes it's an attempt to relate by someone who doesn't know what they're doing
@BigBeter

Honestly I’m not even autistic or (possibly idfk havent been to the doctors in years) have adhd, but this is my only reason why I do it. It’s never to make it about myself - but to just tell the other person that hey man I dont like saying “oh that sucks” cause it sounds like I dont give a shit, so I’m gonna actually relate to you with a similar experience. I’ve had people get mad at me for it until I explain why and usually they feel better about it. I just always felt it was more genuine to just relate with a story to let the person know they aren’t alone in a shit situation than to just go “that sucks”, “it be like that”

Dude Im suspecting I have ADHD, but either way I do this exact same thing as a trauma response. I have no social skills because I was isolated as a child and kept away from everyone, so my only way to ligit say "Yeah I feel you" is talking about my own experience in the same situation. I never knew it was bad, because despite asking everyone "let me know if im doing something wrong please, cause sometimes im oblivious to my own wrong doings" everyone would just get mad and huffy and say "Your making it about you!!". Thats NOT my intention, sometimes i get sidetracked on the story and go over spilling details. Nowdays I hardly talk about myself to people...Cause I dont know how to without feeling like im "talking solely about myself". Its sad and generally upsetting because all I want is friends. But people get caught up in the idea that im a Narc (maybe, it is passable through genes and it runs in my family) but I try not to!!!

I suffer from a relatively rare parasitic infection of strayan, its globally rare but its rife in my homeland, it causes its host to react in opposite to what is expected when responding to another's or one's own emotional pain, aka you could be telling best friend that your house got repoe'd, wife getting divorce and taking kids and ur up to ears in debt and the best you'll get as an empathetic response is "she'll be right" 9/10 times it said by the one complaining as a semi apology for holding their ear hostage to ur bullshit "no worries mate, she'll be right is the culturally appropriate and socially accepted response to every problem ever. if ur ever feeling socially retarded and don't know how to respond, in a polite tone just say she'll be right, it will absolve you of the burdening of trying to relate to others by making you relatable to others

The "not admitting you were wrong" thing is something I've been guilty of in the past, but I've worked on ridding of myself of that tendency for the past several years. Even still, back when I was at my worst, I knew people who were WAY worse. I still know some of them, and if anything, they've gotten worse about it. One time, someone I know claimed that a research paper from March 2020 said that COVID would destroy the entire healthcare system even if hospitals did everything correctly. I looked up their source and found that, in fact, the paper claimed that a combination of two different categories of approaches would keep the healthcare system below capacity. It even included a graph showing this point. When I shared this information with them, they repeated their incorrect statement, then claimed I "insultingly fact checked" them. Yeah, apparently someone taking time out of their day to verify a claim before blindly accepting it, then sharing what they learned in the process, is insulting. Great.

People usually get Assault vs Battery confused. Some examples of assault may include: Attempting to spit on the victim; Miming the act of hitting, punching, or kicking the victim; Brandishing a deadly or non-deadly weapon in a manner that suggests the victim will be hit with that object; and Pointing a gun at the victim, regardless of whether it is loaded or not. In addition, some states have statutes that define assault as criminal attempted battery. However, assault and battery should not be confused with one another since many jurisdictions treat them as separate offenses.
