NOTE: For the month of March 2024, I will be uploading footage I recorded during the 2023 shipping season but haven't previously posted. Early in the shipping season, I made the decision to reserve some video clips so we would all have something to enjoy during the off-season while we wait for ships to return to action. If you haven't seen it already, I recently posted my video showing the highlights of the 2023 shipping season. It can be viewed here: • 35 Great Lakes Freight...
Here is the American Integrity making a slow, lumbering arrival in Superior, Wisconsin on May 11, 2023. She was taking a delay at the Lakehead Pipeline dock while she waited for her turn to load iron ore pellets at the Burlington Northern dock. She would eventually load and depart two days later. It's not uncommon to see the American Steamship 1000-footers take a delay at Lakehead Pipeline, as it affords them a good opportunity to get quick maintenance work done and/or take on supplies for the days ahead.
I probably didn't upload this video last May simply because there were several other ships I recorded that day that were a bit more "showy," giving us salutes as they arrived and departed the Twin Ports. The American Integrity decided to withhold any salutes on her way in, but that was likely because very few people came out to greet her arrival. She is normally generous with her horn when she goes through the Duluth entry... where the crowds are bigger and there is a lift bridge that can salute back.
The 1000-foot American Integrity was launched in 1978 as the Lewis Wilson Foy. She was renamed the Oglebay Norton in 1991 when she was sold to the company of the same, then finally renamed the American Integrity in 2006 when she was sold to the American Steamship Company. According to the Boatnerd website, she is "powered by 4 GM Electro-Motive Division 20-645-E7 V-20 cylinder two stroke cycle, single acting 3,600 b.h.p diesel engines burning marine diesel oil. The power is fed through Falk single reduction gears to 2 controllable-pitch propellers giving the vessel a service speed of 18.4 m.p.h. She is equipped with both bow and stern thrusters. The vessel's 37 hatches feed into 7 holds where she is capable of carrying 78,850 tons at her mid summer draft of 34' 00". Her self unloading system feeds a stern mounted 250' discharge boom that can be swung 92 degrees to port or starboard and unload at a rate of up to 8,930 tons (10,000 net tons) per hour."
