The biggest sad of the change to rotation is how Amonkhet block never got to live without Kaladesh, and cool cards that might have worked without energy being the meta didn't even get any chance.

They'd just be creatures with ETB triggers anyways. All WotC cares about anymore are Johnnies that want big creatures with big abilities that create a huge board state until somebody draws 1 too many lands and then falls behind, because that's what 2018 magic is all about. As long as Johnny spends the most money, standard will never be ok. "Creatures with a ton of abilities are better than interactive non-creature spells"

I think their design philosphy of "pushing" a select few cards for standard and leaving everything else as draft chaff is a far bigger problem than how long the sets stick around for. There are a lot of cards in standard, but the set of playable cards is so shallow that it's hard to come up with convincing responses to the best "level 1" decks. Anyone trying to build a deck that beats Red for example has to live with the fact that none of their cards are as good as Hazoret. I think if the gap between the top 0.5% of cards and the top 10% of cards was cut down a bit, we'd see more diversity in the metagame.

dm9910 This was actually something I liked about Kaladesh. (Due to how pushed energy was,) there was such a high number of playable commons and uncommons that it was a lot easier to build a decent standard deck on a budget. If wizards didn't shove all the power into the rare and mythic slot, standard would be cheaper, and they could go to a 1 year rotation.

Kaladesh just was a broken block all together. It happens. Look, I love rotation season. It is the best time to buy up bulk cards from the past and build kitchen table decks for my wife and I. For example, I just got 4x Heart of Kiran for $0.99 each when they were once between $15-25 each. We do not play for prizes. We play to enjoy the game. Scouring older top 8 lists for deck ideas and buying up bulk onnthe cheap to build them is fun in and of itself, then crashing them into each other is great. Also, when prizes are not on the line, there are no hard feelings, and we can swap decks if someone says "your deck is too good." We can even pull out older powerful standard decks from the past and pit them against each other to see what the king of the decks might be.

See the problem with "I'd rather have my cards playable longer" is that a twice-a-year rotation wouldn't result in a shorter lifespan for cards, it'd be a longer one for some in fact. For example, right now, cards from Kaladesh have been in standard for two years, while cards from Hour of Devastation have been in standard for little over a year and three months. A twice-a-year rotation could leave Kaladesh in standard for the full two years, while giving Amonkhet and Hour an extra six months to do their thing.

One reason I like longer rotation periods is it's less expensive for the individual. If you assemble a decent deck you can play it for two years with a few additions/changes as new sets are released. Spending $400+ for a lower-end competitive deck every year doesn't feel good, and some (a lot) of people simply cannot shell out that kind of money.

They didn't ban Hazoret most likely it was a money mythic that can drive sales of Amonkhet. To a lesser degree might also be a reason why they chose Felidar over Saheeli. It is really kinda dumb they missed that as well as something every deck with creatures will use.

With the right cards, I can kill your creatures or planeswalkers, I can destroy your artifacts, enchantments or lands, I can make you discard, I can pull trouble cards out of your deck, I can exile your graveyard. I can counter your spell. I can get around shroud (via boardwipes) and indestructible (reducing toughness to 0 or making you sacrifice it) Wherever a card exists, I can deal with it with the right card. Once you have energy, however, there's no way to deal with it other than hope you spend it poorly. Sure they eventually printed Sunchaser, but it was far too late by then.

So, kind of a newbie here to Magic, only got started with Dominaria so pardon me if this sounds ignorant but assuming that the point of Standard is to keep these really tight, predictable decklist formats with sort of a condensed roster of potential matchups, how much variety should there be in a top 10 to assume that the format is healthy? When did the scene have the most variety in its high-end competitive matchups, and what builds that kind of environment for deckbuilding?
@sjdhrjrjejdhdhsh
6 жыл бұрын
It's all about win percentage. You typically want 3 tier 1 decks at a given time, that's what's ideal. The problem was this same general deck type was too good for too long. Nobody wants to play/ play against the same deck for over a year straight.
@strannyisyn
6 жыл бұрын
Geoff G like Mitch said, it's about win percentage. If they see a number of decks running the same cards in the top 8 or a deck with an abnormal win percentage they'll start scrutinizing it pretty hard. Poor Deathrite was in something like 6 top 8 decks over a bunch of events. Pretty much every deck ran him cuz he was so good he strangled out other deck archetypes (dredge and other graveyard strategies) so he got axed. Wizards like to see a lot of variety in tier 1 decks. Players do too, I think. Nobody wants to play against the same deck time and time again.
@bennyboy641
5 жыл бұрын
I don't know enough Magic history to say at what time Standard had the most tier 1 variety, but one big thing that really hurts an environment of fun deckbuilding is pushed rares and mythics. As he mentioned in the video, Kaladesh block had several extremely pushed rares and mythic cards that were printed for the purposes of making an archetype viable. Wizards's plan was very successful, but the problem was, was that they surrounded these powerful cards with utter trash. If you didn't want to lose every match, why would you have built anything but Aetherworks Marvel or Cat Combo? When Wizards starts producing sets where the power isn't completely pushed to the rares and mythics, Standard should improve greatly.

Marvel, without Eldrazi, is actually a pretty reasonable and fun card (I played Sultai Marvel w/o Ulamog and the deck felt strong without being TOO powerful)
@superbob888
5 жыл бұрын
To be fair, if you go back and look at those two Standard formats with more cards than the current one, they were diverse and fun. The reason is that back then the philosophy for Standard was to balance the rares more efficiently, and make every archetype damn near playable. They did that with support over three to four set blocks and pushed core cards. This Standard suffers from a lack of archetype support for anything but the core ideas of each two-block set: Energy in Kaladesh and Embalm/Eternalize in Amonkhet. You can do big Standard environments well, but you have to be willing to spread the power level of the cards out and not focus it on one, overwhelming theme. As for Vehicles, they always push the power level of new card types when they first print them. A Copter was inevitable when they introduced the card type. Jitte was never banned in Standard, and it's way more powerful and format warping, even with the old Legend rule.
@CherryBlossom-rs7lm

The longer rotation time is better for the majority of the player base, as it keeps the value of a lot of decks. LGS players can keep their decks for longer which makes standard more attractive to the masses, and pro players get more shit to play with and can pull off flashier and more interesting decks. I love the current standard environment. (I play simic merfolk. The longer I get to keep my fish people the happier I'll be.) I don't mean to be the "I don't have a problem so I don't see why people are complaining" guy, but honestly the biggest issue I have with standard is nexus of fate. That's it. Nothing else.
@Barjack521
6 жыл бұрын
I could be WAY off base because WTF do I know, but I feel like WOTC partially opted for a longer standard rotation time because a growing number of players, myself included HATE STANDARD. I started playing with beta, friggan BETA, I'm an old timer, I played in type 2 continuously up until the end of the Mercadian block and god damn did I HATE every second of it. I had my decks for type 1 and 1.5 and I enjoyed those so much more, why? Because when I found a deck I liked, I wanted to keep it, having to disassemble and buy/aggressively trade for a new deck every time rotation happened was my least favorite part of MTG. I like the idea of new cards, and building new decks and finding new strategies, but It was always stifling in type 2 because the strategy you might know and want to build on was now out of the format and the new stuff, while interesting was constrained too much by the format. This is why I loved 1.5 aka extended the most, but I'm getting off topic. A lot of players I knew and myself left MTG either forever or in my case for a long time up until recently, because of standard. The other formats weren't considered as "competitive" or given as much attention by WOTC, so if you wanted to play the same format as everyone else at your LGS, you were forced into this type 2 stranglehold. The entire reason I came back was when I heard about modern and the support it was getting from WOTC, then I found out about commander and how WOTC was actually giving a casual format some support and I was hooked all the way back into the game again. So the point of this rant is that I think WOTC has realized that it's losing a ton of it's customers to this hyper competitive main format and so started to support others to make the game more accessable, especially to newcomers. It also changed up standard to allow for players to keep playing cards they like for longer and let them build on existing strategies in new ways for longer. Now I may be way off base with there assumptions and I'm sure some asshole will be commenting with a "get gud and play standard you filthy casual" type of comment at some point because this is the internet and those are the types of folk who suck the joy out of everything anyway so fuck em', it's just my take on it, play what and how you like.
@ebbandfloatzel

Barjack521 Yeah no. Exactly why I don't play standard: Eternal formats just don't force you to tear apart your decks. Do you really expect me to play control in standard every time if my counterspell looks like spell pierce one day, or 4 mana "dissipate" the next? Or if my board wipes look less like Fumigates and more like Languish. The problem isn't that blocks stick around too long, it's that WOTC decided somewhere along the way that fun, balanced intricate gameplay should take a back seat to allowing new players to jump in more easily while also emphasizing the power of certain key cards related to the story. WOTC refuses to learn from their mistakes. They knew that introducing new kinds of artifacts was problematic from when Equipment came out and broke standard. So what did they do? Let some of the best artifact destruction rotate out and give us crappy sorcery speed answers that didn't do anything. They knew from Rest in Peace and Stony Silence that answers to dominant strategies need to be able to come in on turn 2, so they print Solemnity at 3 mana, ensuring it came out a turn too late for your opponent to care. It doesn't help that the design team focuses on draft first and standard second.

That's not true. Vine Mare would not be an uncommon if that were true. (imo) lol And Mythic Rarity invalidates some % of draft matches.

Edward W not saying they do Draft perfectly either, but that has been WOTC's primary focus as of late, and rightfully so when Draft sells the most packs. However, that doesn't mean they have to forego Standard entirely. The reprints we got out of Core 19 were a step in the right direction but they could be better utilized to answer problems either they know already exist in Standard, or know will probably exist in the near future. As for Mythics in Draft, there's a reason they're Mythic rare. They're not made mythic to boost their value in the secondary market. Cards are printed at Mythic so you're less likely to pull one in Draft.

I was just bein' salty man. No worries, lol. I know why they print stuff at Mythic rarity, but even then, it's not particularly consistent (Omniscience, etc.) are do nothing mythics in limited. It'd be a much better format if everything was a rare, because then you can fight fire with fire.

Edward W to be fair, there are times where WOTC shifts certain cards to mythic knowing it'll boost the secondary market. Look at Modern Masters 2017. They knew exactly that people wanted Snapcaster Mage, and so to help retain its value, they bumped it up to Mythic. Snapcaster is far from busted or game ending in draft, but that was their excuse even though everyone knows Snap isn't that bad.

Yeah, the longer rotation is perfectly fine. Their mistake was to stop making proper hate cards and counter play for just a couple of strong strategies. There were no energy hate cards and there was relatively weak artifact removal for a long time after Kaladesh. It's no coincidence that both energy and vehicle decks got out of hand since all the other strategies had some nasty hate cards keeping them in check.

Lands are difficult to interact with in most Standard environments, and Ramunap Ruins gave Hazo-Red a level of reach that most other decks didn't have.

Wait, isn't this how standard has been working for a while now? Example: We got Alara with Zendikar, then it went Zendikar with Scars, then Scars with Innistrad. And so on, and so on. Or am I not getting some new system?
@Nylspider

There is a new system For example... Right now, 5 blocks are out, and the next block is going to be the the fall set When the fall set is realesed, the last four blocks rotate, so there are a different amount of sets depending on what time of year it is

I remember the guardian infinite combo. I was new to magic during the AER/KAL block (started playing right before Zen/Inst rotated out so yes I had to deal with Eldrazi too). I remember playing at FNM as a n00b and a guy who built his entire deck around the infinite combo pulled them out and said "That's game" much to my confusion. He then explained that it was an infinite combo where he could keep making tokens forever and there was no way to win. I remember thinking that was the most broken thing in the world. Glad when it got banned. But then we had Coming Of The Second Sun which literally made me rage quit the game for two rotations.

I'm fairly new to MTG, played casually for a few years. The first standard deck I ever built was not too long ago when Ahmonket came out, it was like tier 3-4, a red-green pummler deck that got energy from cards like attune with aether and longtooth and put them into voltaic brawlers. It was fun but not that competitive. I still play it casually, but it was heart breaking to see my first ever deck £70+ quid (mostly on a Rhonan play set) get hit by an obscure ban of attune with Aether and get told I couldn't play my tier 4 deck in standard. I haven't got back into constructed formats ever since and just play casually or draft.

What’s even more busted about the PT AER top 8 is that 6 of them were in Mardu, but 7 of them played heart of kiran. Martin Juza played a jund aggro deck with heart of kiran. Card is broken.

The only problem to Standards that included Kaladesh was the fact it had Kaladesh [block]. Energy is a really powerful mechanic to be able to play cards that are good or even great on their own with free resources

Changing standard to benefit the pro tour scene is an ass backwards idea. The pro tour exists to generate excitement within the magic community at large to maintain a customer base for wizards. When they shortened standard the community hated it because it took a format with high depreciation and sped up the clock on that depreciation. The average player doesnt want to drop a ton of money on cards every year just to keep up with a format, especially when they know the majority of those cards will be virtually unplayable and worthless in a year. Even at 2 years i find standard to be a pretty bad investment. But its def better than 1 year. To make matters worse, on top of advocating for a shorter standard cycle youre also complaining about wizards making cards too powerful. So whether you realize it or not, on top of speeding up the depreciation clock, youre also advocating for card designs that will be even less likely to see play outside of standard since you want their power level reigned in, thus making it harder for them to compete in the more powerful eternal formats. Disagree 100% with what you want here.

AAAAAAND that: "The average player doesnt want to drop a ton of money on cards every year just to keep up with a format, especially when they know the majority of those cards will be virtually unplayable and worthless in a year." is the problem of standard. It's stupid to play it. Here I said it. "Look, I spent $300 on this deck that within 6 months will be valued $100 and in a year will be worth shit BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE STUPID AND THEY WANT TO PLAY WITH RULES THAT FORCE THEM TO SPEND MORE MONEY." F*ck standardand the evil genius that invented it.

I agree wholeheartedly. It would be nice to get a better return for my investment in standard, but the sheer amount of cards in standard at the moment is dizzying. Also, with kaladesh having been so pushed it is at least 6 months over any conservative lifestyle for itself

@8:38 year and a half was the plan, actually. A rotation every 6 months with 3 blocks (6 sets) in Standard at any given time. And I agree I hated that they changed plan. I was really looking forward to Bfz rotating out for Akh and then suddenly it wasn't.

kinda crazy going back to this, seeing standard being the third biggest at 1904 cards just before kaladesh rotated out, looking at right now with 3 year rotation and a whopping 3037 cards legal in standard, oh wotc you confuse me

As someone who hasn’t played magic for a while, Kaladesh was my first block and I really wasn’t sad to see it go, having said this, it’s a real shame to lose the playability of my cards to rotation when the only casual enjoyable format that I can use them is commander, in which the style is so different I’m using different cards anyway, modern feels impossible to get into in the slightest - bunch a weird ass lands get that shit out of here

A couple of factors. One, it's "free" because you had to play lands anyway, but now they can deal those last few points of damage. Two, they allowed a red aggro deck to actually play higher casting cost cards without flooding out. Compare the current 19 land versions of Mono-Red Wizards to PT: HOU Mono-Red. The PT deck can still be aggressive early, with lots of staying power from Hazoret, Chandra, and eternalized Khenras.

It isn't the set being pushed. Tribal decks have just historically been bad in Standard barring full blocks of development and good role players. And when blocks were 3 sets, that was super easy. Now, with 2 sets at most and a design philosophy trying to get away from "Stick my dude. Play some more dudes. Swing.", it is really hard to get the decks to work. Even mono-black Zombies needed 3-4 sets of good stuff, and that deck was good because it got 2 of the very best removal spells ever tossed into Standard. Being able to play Push and Dark Salvation was absurd, and Grasp really pushed the deck over the top. Also Cryptbreaker was a 1-mana planeswalker.
