We were asked about a game-ending strikeout call during Saint Mary's-Loyola Marymount wherein the umpire ruled the batter out on strike three after a pitched ball struck his leg. Article: www.closecalls...
The rule here varies depending on whether the game is being played under NCAA (college) rules, NFHS (high school) rules, etc.
Because SMC-LMU was a college game, we'll start with NCAA Rule 7-4-i, which states the batter incurs a strike if the batter "is judged to intentionally make a movement to be hit by a pitch, regardless of where the pitch is located."
In NFHS and also professional baseball (OBR [MLB/MiLB]), the batter incurs a strike ONLY IF the pitched ball was located within the strike zone when it contacted the batter.
In other words, the NCAA/college standard is whether the batter intentionally moved to get hit or not (TRIED TO GET HIT), while NFHS/high school and OBR/pro baseball's standard is whether the batter tried to avoid being hit or not (TRIED *NOT* TO GET HIT).
If the batter intentionally moves to get hit...
NCAA: The batter incurs a strike, regardless of where the pitch was.
NFHS/OBR: The pitch is ruled a ball or strike depending on its location.
If the batter doesn't try to avoid being hit...
NCAA: The batter incurs a strike, UNLESS the ball was within the batter's box.
NFHS/OBR: The pitch is ruled a ball or strike depending on its location.
If the batter doesn't try to avoid being hit & pitch is in the box...
NCAA: The batter is awarded first base.
NFHS/OBR: The pitch is ruled a ball or strike depending on its location.
If the batter doesn't try to avoid because contact is unavoidable...
NCAA: The batter is awarded first base,
NFHS/OBR: The batter is awarded first base,
UNLESS: The pitch is located within the strike zone, upon which case the batter incurs a strike. If strike three, the batter is out.
At all levels, the result of the ball is dead upon contacting the batter.
