There’s an old saying “if you can’t afford to pay cash for something you can’t afford it at all”. You lose 10% of a new car’s value the moment you drive it off the lot. So a $70,000 vehicle is now only worth $63,000 but, your payments over the length of the loan will have you paying $75-80,000. So you’re driving a car only worth $63,000 that you owe $75-80K on. Cars are the largest purchase the average citizen will make in their life other than buying a house. Purchasing a new car via financing is the worst financial act you’ll likely ever make. A tip to remember: never finance anything that depreciates in value. Save your money up and buy a used car with cash.

@@dirtdiv3ryou’re still paying interest. If your monthly is that high and you need 3 years to pay it off, sounds like you bought out of your means or your credit is bad. Your overall payment before interest seems like roughly $32,400. Did you put a good amount down if anything? Of course, this is all just speculation based upon the minor information that you provided up. Still, $900 a month is still a high amount for a car payment

@@pharaoh6977 Sorry, I looked again, it's just under $800. Credit for both my wife and me is 750+ and yes, we're still paying interest on a loan, of course. I said we did a 3 year plan to minimize interest, not to eliminate it. Anybody that takes out a loan is buying out of their means, however we have an annual salary of $100k without bonuses included and we feel comfortable paying $800/month. We could have purchased a beater, but it's not what we were interested in. Purchase price of the vehicle was 25k. $800 is a high car payment, it could have been lowered significantly if we opted for a longer payment plan but we want to pay it off quickly.

Car payments are the dumbest financial decision you can make.
@andrewmartin9995
9 ай бұрын
I think the point being made here is that it’s dumb to pay interest on a depreciating asset and while that argument has some merit, we’ve become so car dependent in the US that most people need reliable vehicles to be productive (work) and not everyone lives 10 minutes away from work where a high-mileage car wouldn’t be as problematic. Used cars can also be just as costly if they require a powertrain replacement and you’re forced to take out a loan with a much higher interest rate than a new car. Most younger borrowers perceive auto loans as a chance to secure stronger borrowing power for better financial investments like purchasing a home. It can help establish credit history and strengthen credit scores if the borrower is responsible. Most people can’t afford to readily purchase a home or car without some form of temporary financial assistance. The winning solution would be to eliminate car dependency.

I wouldn't say car payments are dumb. I would say paying $ 1k a month in car payments is dumb. The problem is that cars have gotten ridiculously more expensive and people getting a car over there means. If you have a low monthly payment or proportional monthly payment to your salary, i don't see a problem with it. Most people these days can't just buy a car outright. This isn't the 1980s anymore. Even a 15-20k car most people can't just buy outright.
