Colorful tree leaves and the sound of the wind. Autumn is in full swing. It is time for another weekend trip and camping in nature. This time I decided to visit Beskid Wyspowy mountains.
The weather forecasts predicted quite strong but, for me, moderate wind. However, wanting to spend time in comfortable conditions I decided to look at the map to find an optimal place to set up camp.
As a target I chose a certain valley, protected from the direction of the wind by quite a high hill. A perfect place to set up camp.
About 11 am I set off.
During first kilometers I passed clearings full of colorful autumn beeches. Then I cut across the forest to find myself on one of the forest roads used for hauling wood. Open space accompanied me for the next 30 minutes. Finally, approaching my destination, I turned into the forest again, passed the mountain stream and headed deep into the fir and beech forest.
I proceeded to build an encampment. Due to the expected rain and strong wind I decided to build a shelter from tarps similar to a tent. I anchored the shelter firmly in the ground. The structure seemed solid, indestructible and ready for a real storm.
But it did not come. Although it did snow and rain, which undoubtedly added to the charm of camping.
My equipment consisted of Russian sapper from 1944. With its help I dug a hole in the ground, which I then covered with stones. This created something resembling an earth oven on which I placed a grate.
I started gathering firewood. In the surrounding forest I collected a dozen beech branches of various thickness. I also prepared brushwood from a dry fir tree. The SILKY Bigboy 360-10 once again proved to be an indispensable firewood collector.
I lit the fire with a flint and resinous wood. At first the flame was dancing merrily in the wind so I built additional screens which calmed down the situation a bit.
For dinner I decided to roast on the grill the sirloin covered with dried peppers, seasoned with salt and olive oil. To this I added skewers of red and green peppers, zucchini, potatoes and carrots. All enriched with honey mustard.
A fleeting snowfall came.
After dark, I lit a kerosene lamp and began contemplating, relaxing and resting by the fire.
It was time for sleep.
In the morning the temperature was surprisingly warm. I expected frost and freezing weather, but I did not find it.
I drank fir needles tea prepared the previous evening. I ate a bar of chocolate, which gave me energy to get out of the sleeping bag.
I went to a nearby stream to replenish my water supply. Then I prepared firewood.
Due to the fact that yesterday's campfire was perfectly sheltered from the wind, there were still some smouldering embers on the hearth. I blew them out and started a fire. I added a few dry pieces of fir and prepared the grate.
For breakfast I served country sausage from organic farming. It tasted brilliant and crispy. It was worth deciding for a local product. For breakfast I served tea with spruce needles, shashlik of red and green peppers and baked bread.
The end of this very successful weekend camping was slowly approaching.
I folded up the tarp, packed my backpack, and headed back out.
I think that this movie and this trip to the woods can be called the true definition of bushcraft.
