Avakaya Andhra style mango pickle.
If the mango is the king of fruits, then the mango avakaya pickle is the reigning king of Indian pickles! Even in the sweltering heat of the Hyderabadi summers, Andhra avakaya pickle-making is one thing that Telugu families have always loved doing together.
Making Avakaya is a culinary tradition that has been passed down over generations in every family. Every summer, Telugu speaking homes make this pickle with a lot of excitement and love. A typical everyday Andhra meal is served with Avakaya. So most families make this in large quantities to last for a year.
The term "Avakaya", is a blend of two words, where "Ava" means a "Mustard" and "Kaya" means "Raw uncooked mango".
Basic Avakaya is made by simply mixing fresh cut mango pieces with mustard powder, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, methi powder, asafoetida, salt & oil.
A lot of people also add garlic for a unique flavour and the taste.
The prepared Avakaya/pickle is stored in superb cleaned and sun dried ceramic jar for 2 days. This can be preserved for more than years.
