Standard size piece, this way it gets super soft inside. It can be steamed in an oven as well, maybe even better.

It it has something to do with how bacon is made in Japan.

You can find slabs of bacon like that in European deli meat shops. Japan is not the first country to eat bacon like this. I grew up with slabbed bacon there's more flavour then the sliced rasher bacon.
