The smoke which billows from Mount Tokachidake can be seen from the Valley. From the town of coming Furano you can see which way the wind is blowing from the smoke. In town there are reminders of past eruption’s like huge memorial boulders which flowed down during the 1928 eruption.
There are 12 active volcanoes on Hokkaido. Mount Tokachi is one of them, having a erupted three times in the last 100 years; 1926, 1962 and 1988.
Tokachidake area is one of the main backcountry locations in Hokkaido. As you ascend up on skins you realize just how active the volcano is with the webcams which are pointed on the caldera, the seismic study plots and also the trip- wires up the mountain.
Tokachidake is part of the ‘Hyakumeizan’ Japan which are Japan’s hundred most famous mountains.
They used to be a ski resort on the mountain but it was disbanded the last eruption having sustained some damage. You speak to some locals and they remember skiing the mountain with a ski lift.
These days the only way to ski it is to ascend on skins. It is Alpine right from the base so a clear day is needed. Unlike the other mountains in the area the multiple eruption’s have left very few trees below the Mountain.
Ski conditions can be variable especially up high where the mountain is very exposed to the wind. But skiing the volcanoes always a fantastic experience.
