A Bullet would travel faster without air resistance and low gravity. Kevlar alone is just a fabric, not a good armor without proper work... You should test a similar clothing fabric layers and test. In my opinion, as a space suits are not meant to prevent a shot so I think a 22lr may piercing enough to poke a hole to vest and kill you.

Armor piercing 5.56

The problem is in order to make those pistol caliber rounds pierce high level armor you would have to increase velocity and thus energy and thus recoil. Though there would be no air resistance so it would maintain muzzle velocity. But also you would have to be planted or you will take half the energy (I think) of the projectile in space as it would push you.

Space suits are only 3:16th inch thick thats not all kevlar. A kevlar vest is 0.26 in thick and its all kevlar. Spacesuits arent ment to stop conventional bullets and with the added benefit of 0 gravity the shotgun would easily penetrate a space suit especially outside the ship where there is no air resistance in my opinion it would work for spacesuit peircing

How many layers of Kevlar are in a space suit? How many does it take to stop #6-#4 shotgun BBs traveling faster than they can in earths atmosphere? We cant test a shotgun in space but the science says that it would probably come out of the tube at well above tge speed of sound because of a much lower pressure or near vacuum rhat would ve present. It can be tested on the moon, but I really dont think tgats a test we should do or spend money on.

Spacesuits only have 1-2 layers of kevlar. The reason being is because at 10^-4 grams a micro-meteor has more energy than a .308 by 1500 joules. At 10^-5 it's less than 5.7. Space suits really aren't designed for much more than the smallest micro-meteors because no armor would protect you against even medium sized micro-meteors.

So you could draw a lower gauge like maybe a 6 gauge or 4 gauge. Those things are like the 30.06 for shotgun gauges. Hell I seen body armor pierced by a 12 gauge slug. Another thing is loading combinations. So like most modern shotguns can hold more then one or two hell even two would work like the double barrel in the diagram. You could load a slug then buck or bird. flechette could also work too, since that would cut since flechette are basically mini arrows fired just really fast then regular arrows. Anyways that’s my take on why shotguns could work in space plus a good old as I like calling it a face transplant always would work.

Nah, stick with the shotgun but do flachettes. You don't need a through-and-through, just enough of a hole for the internal pressure to take care of the rest. So a bunch of needle-sized flachettes should defeat the Kevlar layers pretty handily. The thing to worry about is what happens to the ones that miss. They'll just, as we see in Mass Effect, keep going forever until they hit something else.

There's no air resistance in space, the projectile from a firearm would accelerate without anything to slow it down, therefore it would hit with a lot more momentum. In that context, a shotgun could be able to pierce kevlar.

Hear me out qe make a 10.5mm recoiless rifle...inspired by the 105mm recoilless rifle for..but like maybe legimately could see there being some sort use for somthing like that....i mean I don't really see gun use in space being all that useful. To make a deadicated designeI mean through a couple options on board that are smalll... Like pistole caliber weapon as you mention. Although i just had a though how protected would you be from back blast, maybe you could have pistol format actuall. Although with less civilian useage i don't forsee such a design being able to he cheap enough to be justified. Side not if 105mm recoilless rifle are not 105mm bullets/artillery and just 105mm rockets then what said might have all been covered. Of 3existijg hand held guns, id like to throw out the xm25, capable of antiship and person warfare. Also like to say while pure space combat is unlikely, moon...is still pretty unlikely...Mars okay actually maybe. I could see Space x fundijg actual space dedicated guns.

The ideal projectile weapon for defeating space suits would be a small caliber smooth squeeze bore rifle. Rifle is not needed for stabilizing the bullet and ballistic coefficients do not matter without an atmosphere. Multiple projectiles would increase hit probability but shotguns are too slow and the target is likely going to be distant and moving.
