I'm not sure it would have worked. I've often been disappointed in movies taken from good books because time constraints force them to cut out a lot of vital stuff. Also, they would probably have to re-cast all the characters because of the age of the originals. Not to mention the mess they made of it when they tried to make the American production.

I remember preordering this book all those years ago. And reading it in a single sitting. It's as good now as it was then! Thank you so much for posting it! I do wonder, however, why Barrie did such a poor job imitating the TV voices of Lister, Krytie, and the Cat... The voices he has done throughout the run of the show, but displayed particularly well in the episode Queeg, are absolutely spot-on. He does the voices well in these novels, it's just not as "on the nose" as in the TV show

I wondered the same thing. Then I saw the Queeg episode the other day and something occurred to me. In that episode the personalities of the other characters get put in Rimmers hologramatic body. So Chris Barrie is doing the best impersonation he can of the other characters. In the other episodes I've seen it's usually Rimmer, the character, impersonating someone to put them down. So he is doing Rimmer attempting to do lister. As in the episode future echoes when Rimmer quotes Listers words about death back to him in a mock scouse accent. I think Chris deliberately made his impersonation worse because it was Rimmer rather than Chris Barrie the impressionist doing it. You see the same thing in a later episode when Rimmer mimics Kristen's voice saying "space Corp directive". Its noticeably less accurate than the version he does whenever he is actually meant to be kryten. I think the voices in these novels are better than when he was doing Rimmer doing the other characters. But I also think he got better at doing them over time. These novels were done quite early on as I'm sure you will know as you sound like longtime fan.

Why didn't they just evacuate the Red Dwarf in the Nova 5? In fact, the Nova 5 is never mentioned again, ever. It's just forever sitting in the hanger bay.
@beenaplumber8379

When they believed they arrived home (though they're really in BTL), they had arrived there in the Nova 5 (end of Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers). However, they also leave a lot of ambiguity concerning timing. Did they enter BTL before or after the Nova 5 was repaired? Was it actually repairable? And when they emerge from BTL, Cat & Lister are still in very poor health when they face the collision with the ice planet (planet pool). Lister fires his shot, then crashes into the ice planet for a third of a century. They didn't have much time for repairs, if they were needed. There are a few continuity errors, but I think Grant and Naylor were just having fun with these books, and not really taking them too seriously.

"Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers" as narrated by Chris Barrie on KZitem is an abridged version of the actual print book. There are several parts trimmed out including the part where the Nova 5 broke in half when the Cat messed around with the crane that was moving it around the cargo bay.

I think he over-uses the word "humankind". What's wrong with "mankind" or "humanity"? And before all you militant feminists try to say it's sexist, "mankind" refers to the human species, not the male gender. Just the same as a woman can be a chairman or a salesman, so mankind can be any or no gender.
@Cheepchipsable

Well the last chapter had quite an extended piece on Rimmer realising how much put upon he was as a woman, and what a cad he had been to other women in his life...
@ejayman
3 жыл бұрын
I think you’re looking into that too much. I’d assume the word ‘humankind’ is used because this whole world is set on a cosmic/universal level, with lots of different life forms. It wouldn’t make sense to refer to themselves as “man” next to other species, “human” makes way more sense as a descriptor

Star trek s not much better. A story still needs internal logic, otherwise "...the Wizard did it!" becomes the deus ex machina, and kind of tiresome. In ST vague science played that part...
