Every song on the "Innocent Man" album is an homage to a classic '60s sound or style or artist. You correctly identified Otis and Stax here; other songs on the LP pay tribute to Motown, Chess, the Four Seasons, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Len Barry, the Brill Building sound, and other influences. Billy Joel *knew* the roots of rock and soul!

This song was Billy's nod to James Brown.

I don’t think Billy Joel could make a bad song even if he tried! And the next one never sounds like the last one. The man is a musical chameleon. Thanks so much Harri and Jami 🌺✌️

@@HarriBestReactions You did connect that the song An Innocent Man was a nod to Ben E King and The Drifters sound, and also Leave a Tender Moment Alone was Smokey Robinson and The Longest Time doo-wop acts like Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers or The Tymes. All of those songs plus Uptown Girl were on the An Innocent Man album, with Careless Talk on there also a homage to Sam Cooke, Christie Lee being in the style of Jerry Lee Lewis or Little Richard and Tell Her About It being a tribute to the Motown sound and there is even a song on the album called This Night, where the melody of the chorus uses the second movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's Pathétique Sonata, as a nod to Billy's days of taking classical piano lessons as a kid.

to me this is one of those all-track "bomb songs". REALLY to me this is the only full LP/album which is so generous musically speaking.

Not just a good song. "Easy Money" is one of the funniest movies Rodney Dangerfield ever did.

Definitely the Stax sound, but in his vocals I hear more Wilson Pickett than Otis (except for that bit at the end).
