Exercise is the best thing you can do not only for blood pressure in itself, but also for the anxiety around blood pressure. Anxiety is built-up mental energy gone awry (misplaced fight-or-flight), and working out burns that excess energy. I've had high readings when anxious, but after I started running my blood pressure typically runs 100/60. Often even lower. I'm also much less anxious in general, burning most of it off during my runs 🙂

@@lsoldo3 Kind of going through the same thing but in my case my parents rushed me to the ER although I was perfectly fine. I finished a long drive (8 hrs in the car) and my readings were 150/100ish - went to the hospital and no GP so they took me to the ER. From there they escalated the issue till I sat at 190/110 and I have since then been in a state of panic when it comes to BP! I got onto medications and since then moved to a health lifestyle and lowered it to 115/70ish for the most part. However, 3 weeks ago I had a tough conversation with my boss and checked my BP right after. It showed a tad bit high - I checked again and it went higher and from there its flown to the sky and I just stopped checking since cause I just freak out!! Once I measured my BP at home in one day i tested about 20 times using 2 different meters so meter accuracy shouldn't be an issue. the results are from 123 to 137, the lower numbers are close to 90. The average Heart Rate is about 80. On the same day, i went to a pharmacy drug store and measured my BP again. The result 199/129 HR 100, i tested 3 more times, still high. I know i have HBP but BP at home is about 140~150, but any time i go to a doctor office office or hospital, BP is always about 200 HR >90. This is a big problem of my life.

I totally understand how you feel I was total comfortable taking my bp for awhile great readings all the time. After for some reason I decided to take it on a day that I was feeling anxiety and of course I ended up with a elevated reading now I'm back in that funk as soon as I start to put the cuff on my heart starts to beat faster. I usually check in the morning when I do check and if it's close to good I just leave it alone because deep down I know that it's good and I'm healthy I understand why it gets elevated etc. I'm trying to get back to that place where I can be comfortable checking it again. Just deep down I think to myself if I get a bad reading it's going to spiral me back down that rabbit hole of anxiety and me thinking that way is what causes the anxiety and the elevated reading. It's kind of like a trap that we sit ourselves up for. I do wish you the best.

But when I take it the first reading is crazy high like 170/85 ( My diastolic is normally fairly good) I keep taking it and it will come down. I'm worried about how many times I take it so this just adds to the anxiety .Eventually though, I get it down to 136-141 / 76-78. Just recently though I was talking to a friend who is an RN who said there was nothing wrong with this. This really made me feel better. First time I took it after this I got 152/ 85 but after just a few more I got 125/66 and 122/70. I think that's not too bad for an old guy! I don't think I can quite throw my machine away though as I need it to get my prescriptions renewed! (Thanks for the video butt! 😃)

Hello, great video Mr. Burridge, I too believed it could be psychosomatic when my loved one had symptoms. Their blood pressure has always been healthy low and normal but recently we found out it is CIRS disease and POTS as well as many other syndromes that the CIRS disease brings. He has always been very healthy and a very high end athlete. Vegan for 15 years and thriving but once he moved into a condo with mold and mycotoxins, that exposure caused POTS and CIRS to begin. We understand that CIRS disease causes psychological effects and just someone going through what this does to you as well, will definitely do so. However, he is very very strong and his blood pressure and heart rate have been taken thousands of time during this course of this illness and have never been high so.... My question for you would be, if blood pressure is normal when laying but high with sitting and remains same or a bit higher when standing. We thought it was orthostatic hypertension as the rate went up with standing but now it is high when sitting and stays same when standing... your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. God bless you

The reassurance you get when you have taken your blood pressure makes you feel calmer in the short term but the action of taking your blood pressure constantly is what fuels that anxiety long term. So I feel like I’m kind of walking a slippery slope here. My blood pressure became very high when I was pregnant but I have had an anxiety disorder my entire life. There are many times where I take my blood pressure and I’m not feeling anxious at all and it’s still can’t go down any lower than 135/95. I have tried a lot of different methods and I’m on a lot of medication to try to fix the anxiety as well as some of the other health issues I have, but basically my blood pressure obviously scares me, but I don’t target at all because of this. It doesn’t matter though because when I go to the doctor it’s still high and I’ve had readings higher than that even when I wasn’t anxious at all. How do you know the difference between an actual issue with hypertension and somebody who has anxiety? My doctors don’t really believe me, but my blood pressure started raising when I was pregnant and because I have so many different doctors there’s like no communication between them. I also have a lot of issues in my family with people who have heart disease, so it is very hard to deal with it. And I also have pots syndrome and sometimes pass out but I’m not sure if it’s from blood pressure or even why it happens. Sometimes it happens when I’m just standing up for too long.

Hi Raj. If you have been diagnosed by a doctor as having hypertension (high blood pressure from narrowing of the arteries) then you will probably be on medication to control it. You should only check your blood pressure if your doctor has told you to do it. Otherwise do not keep checking or it will just make your anxiety worse. If your doctor has confirmed that it is anxiety that is the problem then it is more important to address the anxiety. There is no quick fix for anxiety but counselling (particularly CBT) and if necessary medication are the most effective ways to manage anxiety.

Hi, im 21 years old, but my anxiety is about hypertension. Few months ago, i suffered from panic attack and when they checked my blood pressure, it became high like it was 150/100. Because of it, i became anxious. Every time i got my headache, im already thinking my blood pressure is high. How can i assure that i can't have a permanent hypertension because of my anxiety? Can really anxiety make a permanent hypertension? Im only 21 and it gives me distress. I hope got wrong. Help me.
@TheAnxietyAttic
3 жыл бұрын
From what I have read there is some evidence that the release of cortisol can contribute to hypertension but this is something that is likely to happen over a lifetime and there are many more factors that cause hypertension. (age, bad diet, lack of exercise, smoking etc). At 21 I doubt you have much to worry about but the key message from the video is don't keep taking your blood pressure as it makes your anxiety about it worse.

I've had anxiety for several years and due to blood pressure fear, I've isolated myself for like past 2 years. I am salt intolerant, if I add salt to my diet, it doesn't matter if I am relaxed. It will make my blood pressure 150/100. Without salt if I have a panic attack. My blood pressure jumps to 125-80/135-90. I've isolated myself because if I put pressure on myself it may get higher and it puts me on edge. Please help what should I do.

What do you do when you have the opposite problem..as in you daren’t take it? I was asked to monitor mine at home after one slightly borderline high reading at the surgery. But I just can’t do it. I had a panic attack as soon as the cuff was on. The doctor suggested a 24hr monitor but I think that would be worse. I just don’t know how to get past it. (My GP hasn’t followed up mind you so I don’t think they were too concerned - it was mainly because I was wanting to start HRT). I also have chronic illnesses which mean I can’t exercise, which of course, is one of things advised for getting a healthy BP overall!

Hi Kezia. For most people blood pressure stays high until the panic passes. There is a very small percentage whose blood pressure drops. (Called vasovagal syncope). I explain it in this video kzitem.info/news/bejne/z5ymr3qvsGt9l2U. However if you have had many panic attacks without fainting then you are unlikely to be in that small percentage. Try to resist the urge to monitor your blood pressure. It may feel like it gives short term reassurance but in the long term it actually reinforces the fear. Good afternoon, I'm from Indonesia, doc. Permission to ask a doctor. I hope he can give you instructions regarding the diagnosis of my complaint 🙏🙏. So sis, I first got this from the doctor when I was having coffee with a friend on an empty stomach at that time, because I'm an active person who socializes and socializes wherever I dare, but when I was drinking coffee and smoking, suddenly my heart suddenly started to get worse. I felt like I was falling, I immediately felt uncomfortable, uncomfortable, immediately I remembered people who had heart attacks, suddenly I panicked and cried because I felt uncomfortable, I was afraid, until I panicked, afraid of heart disease too, until my blood pressure rose 180 at that time, starting from that moment. That's when I started to be afraid of going anywhere, feeling dizzy, afraid of gatherings, afraid of going to the mosque, afraid of having my blood pressure measured, afraid of going for coffee, afraid of going far, afraid of being in crowds. Just when I was planning to go, I was already nervous, starting to get tense, restless, and my mind started making up all kinds of things, afraid of it happening again and afraid of fainting and dying suddenly, in the end I was always lying at home, lazy about meeting people, lazy and not productive anymore, afraid of having a chronic disease, afraid of heart disease, afraid of kidney disease, afraid of dying, my body will be weak, lethargic, have no energy, every time I meet people or chat I immediately become tense, uncontrollably anxious. chaotic mind unfocused. Every day checking the condition of the body, counting the pulse, checking the color of urine and feces, losing weight. Basically, it's tiring to the point of feeling uncomfortable and every day I'm anxious and panicked if there's a strange sensation. If you see symptoms that are similar to a chronic illness, you keep thinking so much that you worry and sleep is disturbed, even at the start I can't sleep until my vision feels strange, like I'm not at one with myself. The feeling is only good when I'm alone and at home. Even though I am an active social person, doc. But I'm not congested, my stomach ache isn't sore and my stomach is fine. Hopefully the doctor can provide enlightenment regarding my complaint 🙏🙏

What you are describing certainly sounds like one or more anxiety disorders but to get a formal diagnosis you need to see a doctor or therapist. Many of your symptoms fit with illness anxiety disorder (health anxiety) and the incident in the coffee shop sounds like a panic attack which can be triggered by worry about other things like your health. Panic attacks are so scary they can make you avoid going anywhere for fear of another panic attack. Recurring panic attacks is called Panic Disorder, and when you withdraw from life due to the fear of panic attacks it is called Agoraphobia. Its sounds like your anxiety is quite severe so its important to get help from a therapist. I don't know how easy it is to get help in Indonesia so if you can't then try to learn everything you can about Health Anxiety and Panic Disorder. On my channel you will find a playlist for each disorder which will teach you how to manage and reduce these anxiety disorders using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Hi Kendra. Not sure where you are based but in the UK the NICE guidelines say they are supposed to take 3 readings and if all are high, then they are supposed to have you monitor at home for 4-7 days before diagnosing hypertension and giving blood pressure medication. It is always worth telling the doctor if you suffer from anxiety and let them know if you are feeling stressed or anxious at the time of the blood pressure reading.

@Martin Burridge that's exactly what happened to me over 1.5 years ago. My BP was high and I mentioned palpitations. A nurse practitioner said "oh..you got Afib" and put me on Metroprolol. Bad reaction. It messed me up more. Put me in my 1st ever panic attack. I went to hospital...they said " you have to acclimate to the drug". After 2 weeks I was crying uncontrollably, became agoraphobic, and ultimately suicidal. I weaned off and immediately felt better. But this sent me down the rabbit hole of health anxiety. Since then I haven't touched fast food and drink nothing but water. My left atrium was enlarged so I was put on CPAP. Big difference. I've lost 70 pounds. But the one thing I hold onto is this damn anxiety. Especially since Metroprolol. I've lost faith in the medical industry.😔

At the age of 24, I was put on high bp medication, along with antidpressedents.. In the beginning my health anxiety my bp would 150/90 .. I continued the bp medication for a month and stopped it against the doctor's advice, and was doing quite good for 3 years, and rarely had any episode of higher bp.. In fact, in the course of these 3 years, I would visit a clinic every 3rD month and get my bp checked, it was always 120/80 like.. But all the while, I was taking antidepressedsnt, And a month a ago I was taken off the antidepressants by my doctor and was doing good for 10 to 15 days.. Unfortunately, I'm back to the drawing board, my bp raises now dramatically to 160 170.. My resting bp is now 140/ 70. I can't make sense of this. Just when I thought I'm out of it, it boomeranged out of blue.. The irony is I don't think I have any anxiety now.. I know what I used to feel physically when panic attacks started in the beginning, I don't experience any wild thoughts now.. I don't think of dying unidentified diseases misdiagnoses.. Unfortunately only a doctor can tell you if your blood pressure readings are anxiety related or not. Anxiety can cause high blood pressure readings and cause all sorts of symptoms in the stomach and chest and elsewhere. If a doctor confirms that your blood pressure is anxiety related then its best to throw away the monitor as 1) it is unnecessary 2) it will make your anxiety worse and keep giving high readings. If you are diagnosed with hypertension (which is quite rare at your age) then it will need to be treated. Sorry I cannot give you a more definitive answer.

@@TheAnxietyAttic that's ok I understand, I appreciate your response anyway! You've given me some relief by saying it's rare for my age. I do think it's anxiety related. Since when I commented this, I've tried calming myself down, and it has went down a good bit.

Hi Mo. Unfortunately I am no longer able to offer one on one counselling. Instead I just try to help people who are struggling with anxiety through my videos. However there are lots of good counsellors/therapists out there who like me have trained in CBT. Most countries/states have a register of therapists.

Agree...but how do we know if it is really hypertension already and not just elevated bloodpressure due to Anxiety? How about taking blood pressure while asleep, or the 24 hour ambulatory monitor.

It is difficult to tell the difference but it is best to leave your doctor to make that decision. He will take into account several readings, your age and risks factors.

I don't know where you live but most countries have a register of licensed or accredited counsellors/therapist. Try to find one trained in Cognitive Behavioural therapy. Its the most effective treatment for anxiety.
