@@ofmetalphilosophy4837 There is that possibility. But, it sometimes comes down to eye-fatigue and note-taking. I have an iPad Air2, and am considering upgrading to the Air5. But, I have specific accessories locked into the 9.7 frame. So, I am not looking forward to having to update it all. For example, I have these 2 stands by hoverbar that are super excellent, but they are custom designed for the 9.7 iPads, and also earlier gen iPad minis (I don't know fi the frames sizes have changed on that model line). I do use a Samsung Galaxy Tab A with S Pen - and I have a matte screen that i really like - and I can take quick notes on it. But, my Lumi 2 is just hands down the best device on which I like to read stuff (and take notes). I am expecting the Topjoy Butterfly 7.8 -- if they ever do ship the thing. This seems more like a mid-gen upgrade than a successor. The Max Lumi release in fall of 2020, the Max Lumi 2 in fall 2021, so I'm anticipating a true successor next fall or winter that has a real paper-feel screen, that annoying button moved, and possibly even an upgraded stylus. Like you said, its their flagship and it's becoming dated. I'm sure they realize this too.

Great Video. The issues I have with this, is it is an very expensive for what it is. No auto rotate is insane. The Snap Dragon processor at 11 nm compared to apple using 5nm, or most phones using 7nm is insane as those 7 and 5nm chips sip power compared to the Snap Dragon 600 range used in these, and they are also way more powerful. The two big gripes I have with this is the TTS reads words wrong all the time in PDF files (not ePub though,) and when using TTS in any file type, you cannot pause the TTS and then make a scribble, instead you have to shut down the TTS reader, do the scribble, then relaunch the TTS and start the reading from scratch again. Along with the fingerprint and reflection issue, this could have been an outstanding table, but instead they crippled much of it to save a few cents. Oh and the Fingerprint button should have been on the side on top, and have a magnetic stylus.

Take the screen protector off and compare the images. With my Max Lumi, I used the screen protector that came with the device, and it darkens the screen. I did not leave it on for long. I hate the fingerprints (which are not soooo problematic when having mostly white paper, but it is annoying for sure) and the reflection. I'm thinking about getting a screenprotector, but for me it is a shame, that in this regard, the quality was decreased. Also in the beginning, the gestures did not work great, but as far as I can tell they fixed it. The rest of the device is great ... Hand writing inputs into an App like Evernote seems to show some obstruction or resistance. The whole screen seems to react and become unsaved for previous input. If this is a serious problem with the app being unable to send fresh data through the OS, it means the OS is seriously failing. Why is this, not enough memory or CPU problems on the hardware? Difficult to say..It's like the old days, the printer couldn't print because somehow messages were sent that could not be registered and whole pages just didn't print..These "timeouts" never seem to occur on iOS.. This Android OS does not appear to have sufficient memory..

Thank you very much :) Well, there are a couple that are available, DooDroo has an excellent paperlike feel, but it is quite rough, so it will spend nibs quickly, and the reflection damping and diffusion is not the best I have seen, but certainly better than what you get by default on Max Lumi 2. There are also some other variants out there on Amazon. The only one I've tried personally (from those available) is the DooDroo, and it's quite good, but wouldn't be my personal choice, because of what I mentioned. It's equally likely that the some of the available alternatives are either better or worse, but honestly, I don't know. I would check the reviews of the other available screen protectors and try to see footage of them being used to try and see their reflection properties. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful on this matter.

In terms of the "ghosting" phenomena, does it take a full screen hardware operation to get the "white" areas back to as white as possible, OR could the software, having written the black pixels, rewrite the "white" pixels one or more times with the CPU in the background, while a person is reading, and get them "whiter"?
@MyDeepGuide
2 жыл бұрын
No, this is how the technology of the screen itself works, and software doesn't have direct control over how a pixel is drawn, they just have the command to draw a pixel, rest is marked by the panel itself. Ghosting is a direct consequence of forcing the panel to display a new image faster than it actually can. Not enough time is allowed for black ink particles to "sink" and for the white particles to "rise", rather, they choose a compromise value, which is deemed by someone as acceptable compromise to consider the image "cleared". Only a full screen refresh command will clear out the ghosting entirely, by allowing each particle to fully settle in their position, be it up or down, resulting in a clear image. If you are reading, most of the platforma allow you to set the option to have a full screen refresh after a certain amount of page flips, and that can be set to 1.
@eddiegardner8232
2 жыл бұрын
It looks to me like when the panel contents are being sequentially rewritten, to avoid the delay of a hardware rewrite to a total screen of white, they are selectively overwriting what was already there, flipping pixels to black or white as needed, but the pixels needed to be flipped to white don’t have enough time to flip in the pixel by pixel rewrite operation. They have to be TOLD to flip to white, while the ones needed to be black are being TOLD to flip to black. So, if one is writing a STATIC image on the screen, it could be written once and then written again, several times if necessary, until the pixels are fully rotated to their “white side up” orientation. I have been watching this technology for 40 years, beginning with Xerox PARCs attempts to get “reusable paper” with these electrophoretic displays. Ghosting has always been a problem. While it has gotten better over the years, it still seems to be a minor problem. Doesn’t affect the usability of the displays, just the esthetic image quality.

While the storage and RAM is better in LUMI 2, it may be overkill/may not be needed given the availability of cloud/dropbox etc. The screen and reading/writing experience on LUMI 1 seems better than LUMI 2. Please let me know if the there are features in Lumi 2 that may justify price difference over Lumi 1.

If you watch the part 2 and the conclusion of the review, that will answer your question :)

@@MyDeepGuide Thanks. That's helpful. In world of cloud storage, Lumi 1's 64 GB should be sufficient, with a relatively better screen.

Video is TL;DW. I can list what I count as drawbacks: 1. No SD slot. This way you're FORCED to use network (local or Inet). Knowing how stupid users are, most probably they will read from DropBox (and Boox will upload tons of telemetry thru user's Internet) 2. No HDMI. What *again* forces you to use any network solutions. HDMI is not so expensive to REMOVE it (it was presented and it was cool). 3. No h/w buttons. Obviously buttons will work much longer than "sliding/scratching" on screen surface (and buttons don't force you to dirt screen) 4. Goddamn film instead of glass. Obviously solution intended to faster make your screen unusable. NOBODY care if device will be +200g with glass, but then how Boox force you to buy new one?? 5. Price. It's enormous. For "e-reader" class of devices $300-500 is maximum. 13" is not "the thing" for which you have to pay DOUBLE money. Hey, it's just 3" bigger than reader with 10"! Why price is double? H/w is still the same, only screen become bigger! 6. Big doubts in a guarantee. I read feedback where user was declined just because bought device from... Amazon! WTF?? Boox, it's YOUR device, you cannot decline it! It was made in China and has all your requisits, including serial number. If this number is your, you and only you is OBLIGED to fix device for free. Otherwise it's just scam and such companies must be in jail.

It's rather interesting to me that you characterized the video as Too Long, Didn't Watch, only to offer a wall of text as a comment, which in itself also can easily fall into the TL:DR category :)

@@MyDeepGuide My wall of text (actually even half of page) is *concentrated* opinion about drawbacks (what is 200% more useful than watching how people move hands around reader). IMHO "video" as a media MUST be used only when dynamic scene is presented (say, when you draw on reader). Everything else you pronounce could be easy WRITTEN in text, what saves us tons of time. Don't take it as an offense, I have nothing against you. My list was strictly critic of shitty devices, sold by enormous price. THIS device doesn't worth $1000.

If you bothered to actually watch the video, you would see that I pretty much agree, especially with this device ;) Not all long videos are made the same. Also, I am not saying that your comment wasn't concentrated, I just found it very amusing that as a response to a video that you deemed too long to watch, you wrote a comment that a similarily minded person, maybe even yourself (if you were to read another person's comment, not your own) would also dismiss and deem as too long to read :)

@vincent thorn, thanks for the PSA. all very valid comments based on facts and very helpful for making a decision. if i had missed these in my video i would actually thank the commenter for pointing these out. long form videos are definitely not the best medium. hybrid of written text and videos is a better presentation (which is doable in youtube. text is but many video frames of the same thing). boox privacy encroachment is definitely a concern that is already widely known. long term, i myself find it a slippery slope, but to each his own. i look forward to more competition (and the accountability that will inevitably follow) in the 13.3 space.

@@MyDeepGuide without installing any apps or enabling sync packet capture suggests LOTs of telemetry. As far as the privacy policy the section about logs and synchronized notes is suspect. The explanation for why they need them is vague.

@@j03y__ Quite simple: more they know about you, more they can sell to you! A whole IT marketing works on that. That's why they removed SD slot - this way they cannot know WHAT you're reading.
