It is technically ill and dying. Its core has water circulation however the limbs arent getting nutrition and have all died. It was a matter of 15 years before it became dry and dead enough to be blown over by wind. Plus, the less water a tree has, the harder the wood becomes so to speak. Being it has more bounce and less bite. And a tree that old is definitely dense enough to fight back.

Yea big oaks get waterlogged dead branches they weigh alot and even if your not worried about a 200kg spear hitting your roof you don't want the fungi in it in water dripping on the cabin from the dead tree just a bad plan ,the tree is dying for a reason most trees won't die unless affected by a disease pest or fungi

The trunk isn't an issue yet. The limbs are dead or dying. The limbs are the falling risk. We had to remove one limb from my brother's tree over his house because it was dead and ready to fall but we left the tree up.

Hey man, be careful with those Beaver cuts beavers are often crushed by their own trees because there is no way to directionally foul a tree with a beaver cut. So the chances of you killing yourself or injuring yourself are significantly higher than most other felling techniques
@LengthyProcess
18 күн бұрын
There's no way for a beaver to encourage the tree to go a certain direction but humans have ropes and big ideas. If you pull or push hard enough in the direction you want it to go, it will. The dilemma is figuring out how. Beavers just chip at it until it falls where it falls, very unsafe and certainly not OSHA approved.😂

Beavers don’t often get crushed by trees. They literally will take a couple bites, stop and listen to hear if the trees is falling once it gets to that point. They are honed through evolution for cutting trees… not saying they never get crushed just saying it’s not a common occurrence. If that was the case, they would not have survived through the years. They are the lumberjacks existed before lumberjacks.

Minimum two axes. The first one is used to bark the tree. Use the thicker duller and more beat up axe for this. After get to inner soft wood switch to the cutter which should be extreme sharp and thin blade. Oil your handle once every day for two weeks then once a week for a month then once a month for a year then once a year. I had an axe handle that was 30 years old before it broke. That was a healthy and grandfather water oak with no rot in the trunk, it only needed some thoughtful pruning of some of the limbs that might have had some insect problems. The fact that the ax broke shows that you should have had a person with an actual botanical education to assess the health of the specimen tree that was probably 250+ years old and you should not have been allowed to kill the tree without knowing that it was diseased. It would have been an actual valuable asset that would have made your home even more unique and environmentally integrated with it on the site. I was a landscape architect for 40+ years and it breaks my heart to see you make the decision so cavalierly to destroy such an old mature tree! The old professor

I have looked at water oaks that exceeded 200 years and yes they can get diseases and carpenter ants that hollow out the interior to the point that it’s been like the bark is holding up the tree. And I say again, I don’t care what your book said, you should have had an arborist come out and confirm the health claims that you are making hot rod, but it is obvious that there is limb problems, but as you chewed into that trunk, it wore your ass out and broke your ax and you made it over 50% through the trunk without hitting any rot or carpenter ant 🐜 infestation. I also know that since it is a water oak, you are somewhere in the deep south and chances are that you could have had an arborist from your state extension service come out for free and assess the condition/health beyond the bad limbs which could be from young saplings rubbing against them causing the tree to terminate supplying nutrients as the insects got into it. Those limbs would have eventually fallen in a forest environment and that tree could have out lived your children. And one last thing. Depending upon your county of residence, you might have faced a large fine if that tree is as healthy as it appears. Don’t ever just trust a blanket statement that someone makes in a book. Hell, Joe biden can get a moron to ghost write his book and I guarantee you that it is full of shit.
