The Netflix documentary Game Changers as well as Forks Over Knives are awesome resources as well! Convinced my meat loving husband to go plant based also instantly! It’s really interesting after a few months your desire for animal products completely disappears...we are definitely on our way towards veganism.

Veganism isn’t a diet. It’s an ethical decision. I actually gained weight when I went vegan, because my body is now 75% hummus. Which is probably unhealthy, but at least I’m saving animals ^^

When speaking with a doctor, it would also be helpful to research medical professionals who know what they're talking about nutrition. When I first went vegan, a gastroenterologist (with a Harvard Med School degree, to boot!) told me that it was a terrible decision and that I would never have for anything. Eight years later, I'm a long-distance runner and I do pretty hardcore workouts six days a week (because I love to do it and it brings me joy, NOT because of diet culture). I have plenty of energy. There are a lot of doctors who are knowledgeable about acute medical care but still think that meat and dairy are necessary.

If someone said that to me, it would just highlight their ignorance. Slaughtered animals are not a food group. They are exactly that - the corpses of tortured beings. I can eat all vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, and hey, even vegan ice cream in the world without restrictions. In fact, I'm healthier for it. Also, there are plenty of vegans who eat junk food all the time: Burgers, fries (chips), Oreos, potato chips (crisps), mac and , fully-loaded nachos with vegan queso and vegan bacon bits. KZitem is a great resource for people who are interested in versions of any recipe - as well as original vegan ideas. There is plenty of food to go around!

PS: I also use cruelty-free vegan cosmetics, personal care products, and fashion. It's definitely an ethical issue.

Love it. I'm anti-diet culture yet I workout every day and am vegetarian. The difference is I workout and eat right for how I feel inside, how I look outside is merely a side effect, never the motive. So, I love this, and I'm 100% on your side! There is a difference between a diet and a lifestyle, and we better understand the differences.

Thanks for talking so openly about two very important subjects and relating them in a way that isn’t the stereotypical vegan pushing it in your face. People think veganism is such a ‘limiting diet’ when really I’ve eaten more interesting and varied food than I ever did eating meat! It’s so much more of a conscious effort to think of the bigger picture. I hope you’ve made people have a think about even just cutting down or being vegan a couple days a week, making any change is still a change 💜💜 love you boo. Cant wait for the next one xx

Thank you for this, Charlotte. My initials motivations for moving to a vegan lifestyle 10 years ago were a mix of both the ethical side and the restrictive side. I’m currently in relapse and I’m making steps towards intuitive eating and I have a real internal struggle about this. I have the strong ethical feels but I’m also using it in ways that stop me eating certain things. I have listened to a few podcasts recently and then this, which makes me feel that I can break free from disordered eating and remain vegan. I’m going to go and rewatch all the documentaries (avoiding those which focus on health reasons other ethical reasons!) thank you again for bringing me some more clarity and helping me unpack my thoughts!

I stopped looking at it as a diet and started making healthy substitutes. Instead of ice cream I would get fat free yogurt and freeze it. I made it about feeling better and being healthier for myself and my family! I haven't stepped on a scale or taken a before and after picture because I don't want it to become toxic. It doesn't matter how i look it matters how i feel and that i am healthy for my kids! ❤

How do you feel about a person wanting to loose weight through lifestyle changes (wanting to change eating habits for the better for their entire life), and wanting that weightloss for health reasons (ex. Joint pain)? Just asking since there seems to be a very wide span of oppinions claiming to alline with anti-diet culture (:

I actually recently read the book Intuitive Eating (which is a fantastic read btw!) and the idea with IE is to listen to your body and learn to tune back in to those internal hunger/fullness cues we listen to as children. Some people may end up losing weight if they’re currently above their body’s natural set point or they may gain weight if they’re below it, but the focus shouldn’t be on changing your weight. Many studies have shown that IE is much more effective at helping overweight people lose weight and keep the weight off than any diet, however to be able to eat intuitively one of the first rules is to forget about *trying* to lose weight.

I love this video! Thanks for sharing your story. It's nice to hear from a vegan with a healthy, realistic and compassionate mindset and I love your commentary on diet culture. I'd love to hear more from you about diet culture, health, etc. I think you could help a lot of people with your experiences and opinions as your attitude is so kind and educational. You seem like the kind of person I'd love to be friends with in real life :) have a great day Charlotte! Thanks for the content.

Very interesting take on this controversial topic, thank you for the video! I went plant based after being a regular meat eater and trying veganuary earlier this year, mainly for health and performance reasons (I participate in endurance races and as many people before, I also noticed an improvement in resting HR, speed, soreness and recovery). And although I didn't go fully vegan (I eat eggs and cheese maybe once a week), just trying it helped me realise I don't crave meat at all. I can totally relate to "seeing a dead body" instead of food. I also watched what the health but upon checking their statements and trying to find references, I found many truth-twisting and even sensationalist lies, which is a shame because it gives bad rep to an otherwise good cause. For my avid meat eater, but somewhat curious friends I rather recommend the Game Changer documentary as something more scientifically accurate.

I have been a vegetarian since 2006 (haven’t had red meat since I was 8-only eating chicken and turkey) and I went vegan for a few years and now back to vegetarian 🌱just works for me and yes the same it’s more mental for me...I can’t stand the taste of meat and I only see dead things as well! But it’s ok if other eat it! It’s everyone’s decision to what they want or do not want! 👍🏼

Love this! Thanks for covering this topic. I consider myself plant based but I do my best to be as close to vegan as possible in about 95% of my purchases/consumption. I also take health and fitness seriously but find diet culture can be so so toxic and misleading.

For me the difference is totally clear. With diet culture and veganism you cut out entire food groups but the difference is in the mentality behind your decision. I'm vegan because of the impact on the environment, because I want to save animals and for my health but with diet culture you do it because you want to achieve a certain ideal weight and size even if you put at risk your own health... when I went vegan I even put on weight lol I don't get how someone could mix these two concepts
