We've gotta get Chris riding a classified powershift hub. Also, the rear derailleur shift on SRAM being sped up for 1x is well known and documented. It's because the rear derailleur has to register the double tap for shifting the front derailleur and that requires a little bit of a delay, and yes, the rear derailleur, which is the brains of the system, does know if a front derailleur is paired or not.

Rain every day, standing water on the roads, high winds, temperature in the 0 to 5c range but feels far worse once you’re wet. All that means you’re riding a bike with mudguards, wearing wet weather clothes, have a real struggle just keeping your bike clean and working for a week, let alone banging out 100km a day (allowing for **family quality time**)

as someone that rode Shimano for years and recently moving over to SRAM, the front mech slowness issue is so over blown and just a bunch of bloviating for nanoseconds. You have to have a FD sync'd for the system to know you have a FD. However, I did find the new version of the hoods more comfortable over the older larger hoods. I put some Rival shifters on my gravel and have the Force D1 vers on 2 other bikes. It is noticeable, but not overly bothersome. They just fit my hands better. On 1X, run the K-Edge chain keeper and you will not drop the chain. Tailfin tube bags are outstanding

I think with these wizz bang bikes, we’ve reached a point where it doesn’t make a repeatable difference in the real world. I’ll go so far to say that with all of my bikes, my position is as close to identical as I can make it, and there’s no difference over my routes. Nothing above and beyond a margin of error. I can tell you for certain, you make a bigger difference with tires than anything, provided same position. I have slow “I don’t want a flat tire” tires on one bike and GP5ks on my others and there’s a solid 10 percent difference in power lost. Your body is so much of the drag the bike doesn’t matter enough.

1x with a 48T chainring and a 10-36 cassette is quite reasonable, even in "hilly" areas. Sure, you can't get the cassette in Red level (unless you're TJV who used 10-36 during TdF) and having a 4* chainring might hurt your ego, but if you want to run 1x you actually can with that setup, with essentially the same range as 53/39x11-30. Still not great fo endurance rides if you can't avoid hills, but in an n+1 scenario I would consider it.

I found it disappointing when I setup the 2x on Force AXS, so much so I went back to 1x but eventually went with Shimano 12s Di2 2x. Shimano by far has better ergonomics, I did set up a similar shifting setup as with Sram with the left going down and right going up the cassette. Shifting was marginally better, but the front mech on Shimano is just MILES AHEAD of the Sram front mech.

This was an interesting chat when talking about perception of a bike's speed/acceleration. Personally, going from an old CAAD10 to an older Trek Madone there was not a big difference. Then moving to an Argon 18 Gallium (rim) felt stiffer and "quicker". Moving to an Argon 18 Nitrogen Pro (rim) it felt like a rocket, not in acceleration but it just felt fast and like I could hold speed "easier". Moving to a Giant TCR (disc) it is similar to the Gallium but this one has electronic shifting that is a nice upgrade. I test rode a SRAM Force SL7 and it felt more like the Nitrogen Pro but quicker to accelerate. If I could justify the SL7 I would buy one immediately. It just had the best all-around feeling of speed and responsiveness of the bikes I have ridden in my life.

In my experience, when you own and ride more than one bike in your rotation, it is pretty easy to ‘immediately’ get a good impression of how the bike rides the very first time you ride it or swap back to the other bikes. Example after a week of riding my lightweight climber I jump on the S5 and straight away I notice the differences enough to talk about without the potential influence of “new bike buzz” cause I’ve owned both bikes for a long time. So I’d like to see Chris ride the S5 for 2 weeks then jump back on his Chapter2 for a week and tell us what he noticed straight away, and then back again to S5 after a week and again give us the impressions. This is usually as good and as accurate as you’re going to get with “feel” of a bike?

The chain drop likelihood is a myth and the Garmin alerts are for actually 2x setups to prevent cross-chaining. 1x is the future, the only thing a 2x setup has up its sleeve at the moment is range which can be negated by proper cassette and derailleur selection. Anyone who doesn’t think 1x is the way to go hasn’t ridden a proper MTB for 10+ years, very easy to adjust to the greater cadence changes between gears on even something like an eagle rear cassette with just a couple hours use

I've always properly set up my FD and I've dropped the chain 2-3x over 8,000 miles shifting from the big ring to the small ring. It's not frequent and you can mitigate it by making sure the rear derailleur is in the 4th or 5th gear instead of the 2nd or 3rd but it doesn't happen occasionally. 50x10-33 is basically the same gearing as the large chainring of my 52-36x11-34. picked up a friend's old 10 year old S5 ( rim brake, ultegra 11spd, mavic krysiums lol) at the coffee shop. According to my arms....light as a feather. doubt it weighed 7.1 with everything on it minus the bidon. #progress

Jesse is down to earth. Which is great, Chris is too, but Jesse is properly so.

1x set up on a SRAM system doesn't speed up the shift in anyway, the shift speed is the same but exactly as you said, there is less of a delay waiting on the other paddle to be used for a front shift. This is a thing for sure. To Jesse, the rear derailleur is the brain of the system and it is paired to just the shifters. You can only pair a front derailleur if you have one there. If you did pair the front derailleur in and then remove it, you do not get the quicker response and if the sytem thinks that it is in the small ring then it wouldn't let you in the 10tooth either. Hope that helps

Also, it'd be interesting for you to try the Force D2 levers. Different shape and a little smaller at the top bulge

Also, it is a clutched rear derailleur on the 1x, the SRAM AXS range has a fluid clutch system in it. The chainrings are also a narrow wide, so they hold the chain on. I've had a 1x bike in the garage the entire time of SRAM AXS and I've never dropped a chain. That's crits or gravel. Sorry for multiple comments, just replying as I watch

FunFact: i run the following kit, Castelli, Sportful, Altura, Endura - Castelli and Sportful i think are made in the same factory looking at the labels, often both are really discounted and about 60% of my kit, especially winter in the UK is Castelli and sportful, Endura are also quite good... the hidden outlier is Altura... quality cheap kit but holds up with some of the best i have... Rapha, Maap, PAC / PAS are kits i never go to and are heavily overpriced and overhyped for what they are..

My thinking with Alex Dowsett or other Ex-Pros who start coaching after their racing careers. Their customers are mainly going to be people who put a lot of value on being coached by an ex-pro. And that's totally okay. Other people may value a coach's degrees, experience, track record or their youtube persona. But I like the way Jesse answered the question. Class act.

and did the haircut come with the S5 or was that a prerequisite?

It would know that it is a 1x system. With axs, you pair all of the components together and then you pair it to the app, so it would know that there is no front derailleur and that the double tap function isn't being used (unless you programmed it for something else)

Sram 1x rear shifting is definitely faster than on 2x, it knows there is a front derailleur as there will be a front derailleur paired into the system. Vhris is correct in saying that it takes more processing time to figure out if you are pressing one button or two

Chris’ gearing is the equivalent of a 55/38-11/25… 10 years ago this was pretty normal… so bigger gear that 53/39-11/25 but easier climbing gear.. 1x does work if you could push the old 53/39

Good for flats, or minimum 5w/kg+ guys. So for 95% of riders, a clear nogo.

@@Gianniz27 I ride the same gearing at 4w/kg and it’s absolutely fine in a hilly area

I agree with Jesse on the Festive 500, first week of January would be a great start to the new year. Plus lots of folks are traveling home or enjoying vacation time and thus not really available for all that riding. Or just stretch the Festive 500 from Christmas through the first week of January and give everyone a little more time.

In theory, 1x should have LESS chaindrops (cause obvs no shifting in the front), i would definitely say that its the aftermarket chainrings, not the 1x setup itself.

With this shifting, there is hand shake signal as well between front derailleur and shifters every few milliseconds. By removing front derailleur there is no longer this signal exchange, is one less signal shifters need to do. But not sure if this would impact speed.
