When I said goodbye to my grandfather the night before he passed, the nurse came in with a pot of coffee and some little Debbie oatmeal cream pies and said “I’m so sorry these were all we had tonight.” What she didn’t know was that specific snack cake was my grandpa’s and my special dessert when I was a kid, to the point that I’ve called them “papa cakes” my whole life. It was so special to have one with him one last time.

We told the nurses to put it in their break room and share it after my aunt passed away. My aunt was always giving to people, rarely taking anything. She cooked amazing dinners for whole family gatherings and loved seeing people eat her roasts, sides, soups, etc with a smile on their faces and being completely full afterwards. We figured the nurses would feel the same way, and she'd want the nurses to have something for all their hard work... so as a thank you from us and in her best memory, we did that. We even baked cookies for the hospice staff she would have gone to, had she not passed two days before the scheduled transport.

True story- When my husband and I adopted our son, the hospital staff was a bit cold/distant with us (I was on great terms with my son’s birth mother and constantly asked her if she wanted me there to keep her company, if she needed some space, if she was hungry, etc.). I also made sure to be kind to the hospital staff, but they still didn’t like me. My husband had the great idea of getting these awesome donuts for the entire L&D floor to see if they would warm up to us, and oh my God it totally worked. The change I saw was instant and I swear they probably would have let me walk right out of the hospital with my son without the proper paperwork being done first.

My uncle is a doctor. He told us to bring the nurses chocolates and donuts and such when my grandfather (91, English isn’t his first language) was sick in the hospital. We were supposed to be limited in the amount of time and number of people who could visit because of covid, but the nurses would look the other way with the time. We were super grateful because my grandfather wasn’t being responsive to anything besides a specific dialect that the hospital doesn’t have a translator for My mom also got my grandmother dove chocolates to give to the nurses when she was in the hospital. They were certainly happy to see her 🤣🤣

Wow.. I didnt realize hospital staff did bereavement trays for the greiving family... My local hospital treated my father in law like shit and didnt communicate with us. He died in the middle of the night and I was the only one who could handle seeing him atm (thankfully my father met up with me at the hospital for support). The nurses were so cold towards me and I sat alone next to my father in law and collected his things alone. After being in his room for a half hour I went to the nurses desk to get some info while crying. There were 5-6 nurses and one begrudingly offered to get me water. That hospital is responsible for his death and they knew it and didnt care. They definitely took advantage of the fact that my mother in law is both mentally and physically disabled. And now that I think about it.. A small tray as a sign of support from nursing staff would have helped make that experience much less traumatic....

He would tell us they took it, so we set up a camera in his room on his birthday and left him 2 slices of cake. Well we caught the nurse stealing the cake and a watch from him while he was sleeping. When we went to report it, they told us…that worker will be fired but we ended up taking my grandpa out of there cause we were sure they all do things like this. Very sad. I worked in the kitchen in a senior care and rehab facility, and we (sadly) made the bereavement carts for family members. We were able to load them up with different drinks (coffee, sodas, water, and juice) and different snacks and fruit for the families. We normally prepped them beforehand or if we knew it would be a bit before residents passed, and checked in with the hall nurse and families to top things off every little bit between meal services. It was always sad losing a resident, but glad we could at least provide something for their families during a difficult time.
