I was only about one year old whenever this was originally aired. I never watch Coronation Street much these days. I prefer the classic Coronation Street because there used to be so much fun and humour back in the day. I can’t help listening to some of these over and over again. Thank you for posting.

Stan and Hilda were comedy gold - followed a few years later by Jack and Vera. The humour overall was legendary and IMHO is what made Corrie unmissable for so many years - and then, sadly, it all turned to sh** when the new breed of producers decided viewers needed to be "educated" instead of "entertained". I stumbled over these years of classic episodes when I was searching "British TV drama" on KZitem and am loving/bingeing every minute. Thanks ProfessionalGun66. Much appreciated.

There was already quite a lot of Feminist dogma creeping in though bought by women and men, without question. The casual misandry and generalisations of some of the women characters was crass. Think you know Feminism? Do check out Janice Fiamengo and Karen Straughan, who have the story from its beginnings.

Imagine an American version of Corrie back in the day Derdrie - Lauren Bacall Ken - Cary Grant Elsie - Joan Crawford Rita - Bette Davis Bette - Mae West Mike - Frank Sinatra Audrey - Gloria Graham Hilda - Thelma Ritter Gale - Mia Farrow Emily - Olivia De Havalind Mavis - Butterfly McQueen Stan - Clarke Gable
@susi-emily

That would be perfect, although as I'm imagining a 1930s pre-code version of Corrie, I'd drop Mia Farrow as Gail and bring in Joan Blondell. I'd swap Mike from Sinatra to Humphrey Bogart, and Audrey from Gloria Graham to Tallulah Bankhead. Alf would be Spencer Tracy. I wonder who my favourite, William Powell, could play? Gloria Graham would make an excellent Audrey for the 1940s Film Noir version of Corrie, with Robert Mitchum as Mike Baldwin.

I know how good Corrie was in those days, because just like when I watch it now, I get really irritated by the likes of Audrey, Ivy and all the other irritating characters, Audrey manipulating gullible Alf, Ivy bossing everyone around, Eunice and Fred, and the rest of them and I wanted to see what happened next, but I haven't watched it for years now, got so bored with the characters and even more disillusioned by the stupid storylines. It's comical that Audrey acted "as common as muck" when her real life background was anything but.
