Suggestions: One, make sure the camera has a complete view of the clutch and not obstructed by the trimmer's handle shaft which was in the way. Two, when you removed the clutch housing/cover, you should have mentioned the tool you used to slide down the crankshaft (possibly a hex tool/whatever size fit it). Thirdly, there must have been a way to remove the (wiring from the head to the trimmer's handle shaft as it can fall away from the head and possibly do damage to the wiring, etc. Other than that, at some point around fix #25, you should actually get very good at assembly and disassembly. .. :-)

@@tormixbalsafar3128 I wouldn't worry about my video. The issue is too common sense obvious and not only can't a blind man see it, a vision-certain cannot. Leaving out important details is YOUR omission and not mine. I'm just stating the obvious to so many that's witnessed the lack of details... Next time and next video my recommendation is to forward think the obvious and not lack seriously on the details that matter.

Thank you for making this video. My Craftsman trimmer clutch went out today. I have been looking for a video that shows how to disassemble and fix or replace the clutch. I stumbled upon this video and shows exactly what i need to do. Now after watching this video, I think I can do it myself. Once again thank you!!

Thanks for making this video. I learned a lot. Now I think I understand why my Echo SRM-231 trimmer is not as powerful as it probably should be.

Excellent video, however you should've started with the problem that you were having, how you diagnosed it, and if any other issue could've caused the same problem. Also, you should've introduced the Brand and Model Number of the trimmer, if the replacement parts are readily available, and the link attached hetero

Thanks that's a good one, helpful. I pretty much had to take it apart just to replace the gas line that kept pulling out. I got mine reassembled and the clutch won't turn the shaft. I'm wondering if I just didn't seat it good enough or if there's a certain way the shaft needs to go into the clutch. There's a line from a sharpie on that clutch drum...I don't know if it needs to be on top or what. It's a good powerful trimmer. I hate to trash it. Any ideas or suggestions appreciated.

I honestly don’t remember. I have both metric and SAE sets handy and forgot to mention which size I used in the video. I try to mention that in my newer videos to help in this situation. It looks like possibly 5/32 but again I don’t remember

I don't understand something. If you screw the drum into the end of the crankshaft, wouldn't the drum always spin with the crank? The 2 clutch plates are supposed to grip the drum and engage the string which activates the head. I don't understand how the drum doesn't continuously spin being screwed to the end of the crank. The screw on my drum won't come out. I think there must be some bearing inside there with a retainer that keeps that screw from coming out. When you tighten that screw onto the shaft, you're really tightening that bearing onto the shaft and that bearing continually spins. Then, when engine rpm comes up, it causes the clutch plates to extend and grab the drum which is stationary at the time and activates the string which engages the head. That's the best I can figure.

You must be right. I haven’t taken one apart in a while to see it again and it’s been to long for me to remember. It’s got to have some kind of bearing or possibly just bushings to keep the shaft from turning during lower rpms

Very good demonstration video on how to repair Craftsman Trimmer clutch, only disappointment is a few critical views were blocked by your hand and the camera was not taking in the part we need to see, not your fault, camera man just needs to focus correctly.

It normally goes the opposite way that the head on the trimmer turns. That way it won’t loosen while you’re trimming
@Nantucket_acres

what did you use to loosen and tighten the clutch drum? A hex key? What size? Can't seem to get mine apart

I think it was a hex. May require an impact gun. I’m sure there is a little bit of thread locker on it

Allen wrench will get the screw out for the housing. Then you can use screwdrivers or needle nose pliers to remove the springs and the center fugal clutch pieces

hi there i'm joseph lama from nz can you give a video how to fix up a curve shaft weedwacker my one is a Homlite 225cc 2 stroke is ceased up i looked at the problem its the clutch is there another way thank you!.
@EverydayJourney
7 жыл бұрын
I do have a curved shaft but it is a weed eater brand. Most trimmers are similar. If you disconnect the shaft and pull the cord without the spark plug installed, you can tell if the motor is ceased. If motor is ceased, you might be better off getting a new one. ( or a good used one) if it's just the clutch, it is a simple fix. Just watch my video or one of the many others that explain it

Very interesting , on mine mtd 990 you simply just cant take off the drum clutch without blocking the piston and it's a torx screw and you use an alen key... And i just cant take off that torx it's so tight, rust ...don't no :(

15:04 Wait! You didn't put that washer/spacer back on top of the clutch plate assembly! This is a fairly detailed repair of your clutch. There's only one thing I would have changed about your procedure: instead of taking a chance on fin breakage with your pliers, remove the spark plug and move the piston to the bottom so you can stuff a rope into the cylinder.
@EverydayJourney
5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have done this both ways. The rope trick would have been a better option. I just try it this way first. If it needs more force then I go with the rope. You just have to learn the limits. Thanks for watching
