Bishop Dr. Chimwemwe Chikukula Mhango opens up about what exactly made him leave the CCAP church to set up his own church called Redeemed Presbyterian Church which later changed to Redeemed People’s Church.
Bishop Mhango was born in 1967 at Bebula village, TA. Mmbelwa, Mzimba. He holds a Masters degree in Theology, a Masters degree in Divinity and a Bachelors degree in Music.
Apart from being a popular musician, he was a well-known cleric with the Livingstonia Synod of the CCAP. He ministered at several churches in the Northern region before being transferred to Kanengo.
In October 2015 he fell out with the CCAP church, there were divisions in the Kanengo Congregation. The wrangles between the congregation and the synod begun in 2014 when the Rev Chimwemwe Mhango was transferred to Ekwendeni way before his ‘term’ was over. After the church protested and the posting failed, the synod later posted him to Euthini in January this year, a move which again did not succeed because it also did not go well with the church. Rev Mhango then decided to leave the CCAP church, but continued using the church that he and his congregation had been constructing, arguing the synod did not contribute anything to the construction of the church. The synod dragged them to court and they lost the case, were evicted from the premises and moved to a new location.
He later launched his church in Lilongwe named the Redeemed Presbyterian Church (RPC) with its headquarters in Lilongwe. Later naming it the Redeemed People’s Church. He was consecrated as first bishop of Redeemed Presbyterian Church.
