Hi Jay, I'm using CS4 now and I believe when I did this tutorial, it was CS2. If you know a student, you can pickup Photoshop for a decent price...CS6 is the current version Retails for 949 but you can pickup the same software on a student ticket for 249...hell of savings! Not too sure about used licenses, but any version of Photoshop Cs2 or higher should do the trick. Also, if you don't feel you want to spend the money there are many other software choices to process your images. Doug

Good tut, thanks. Have shared it with a friend who's just starting out. Personally, when working in curves, I always make sure the final segment up to the white point is a flat line. It helps prevent over exposing the stars during the stretch.

That's very common, when you first start, your image is basically dark, therefore you see all of your data "all the way to the left" on your levels. Keep applying curves and you'll see your level's data band get wider and wider. It may take a few iterations of curves to start seeing your data. What happens after three or four iterations of curves? Does more of your target become visible? After your target becomes visible your data band should become larger in levels.Curves first then levels

Thank you for the tutorial. I've seen others say that when working with levels to stretch the data to make sure to not move the blackpoint into the information on the left, but you are moving it halfway into the information before the curve. This advice has always been problematic for me because the left side always extended too far left and so I could not move it at all. Also, they move the right side over some, but you only move the left side. I'm new with all of this and so my images don't have a lot of information, but this has been helpful. I'm going to reattempt some of my images again. Thanks.

Hi SKS! Most software comes with a trial period. One of the most affordable versions is Nebulosity by Stark Labs. This software will capture and process your image, while it's not entirely free ($90), you can try it unlimited period, but your images will have "LINES" in the final results. DeepSkyStacker is great totally FREE software that will stack your images. Another free software is Registax, primarily used for planetary process, but FREE, and very good!

Color is a similar approach. I have another tutorial I use for One Shot Color cameras on my website under "Astro Imaging Tutorials" --> "Learning to Use Photoshop Curves" This was an earlier tutorial I did, it works, but it's not as easy as "123". Maybe I'll do another video tutorial with a Color image. I'll try to put some files you can practice with too. Thanks!

Stacking algorithms are a little bit more complicated than making layers. I haven't seen a way to stack AP images in PS. Try Deepskystacker to stack your photo into a TIFF file first, then bring into PS.

excellent video buddy. i have a quick question for you on this. I am thinking of getting into some astroimaging with my goal of ending up in full on ap. my question is that would photoshop elements and Lightroom but adequate for this as opposed to full on photoshop?
@Myastroimages
8 жыл бұрын
+tapakegabrew There are all kinds of choices for Processing AP. Another popular AP program is PixInsight. However, to answer your question, ELEMENTS doesn't support LAYERS like PS does. Layers are very important. Also back to Processing AP...many people use more than one program to process there results. I have a few Videos where you can download original data sets and try processing the results yourself. This may help you decide what path you're considering for AP Software. This is a three part video series: kzitem.info/news/bejne/p32gsXZpkmeYiYY

I have another video "Convert Gray Images Into RGB Color - Photoshop Astrophotography", this explains how to make color images with mono cameras. DSLRs are capable of nice colors, but, I've found tearing apart a color image into RGB (3 channels) and process each color channel separately, produces nicer color images.

Hello, Doug! I came back to this video to ask a question. I've seen video tutorials of Curves where the Histogram is visible in the Curves window. I didn't see it in this video. I was wondering how do you get the histogram to show as an overlay in the Curves window? I have CS2. Maybe it isn't available in that version. Rick Tucson

Astrophotography Tutorials Yes, I have the same thing under WINDOW, but when I click on it, it brings up a separate window. How do you get it to overlay the Curves window?

azcharlie2009 Ok Rick, I see what you're talking about. CS2 must not have that feature in Curves. When I bring up Curves in CS4 I see the histogram inside of the curves window. You could try levels and then watch the histogram outside. It must be a CS2 limitation. Doug

Hi Rombout, Yes NGC7822 is the name of this object. You can reference this target in Google or Astronomy software by this name. Ha is a type of filter used to cover the camera's CCD. I found another great source for astro tutorials last night on KZitem: dg-imaging.astrodon.com/tutorials/ browse this page and check out this tutorial for more info on Astrophotography. I hope to build a library like Don's.

Here's a clue Daniel, think of the CURVES as the "Exposure". Use the Curves to pick up the faintest detail in your image. Then to bring down the over exposed image, use LEVELS to bring the exposure down. It takes some practice and each image is a little bit different. Another trick is short exposures under 2 minutes will not bring out as much data as a 5 Minute exposure. I think the image in the example above was a 10 minute exposure set. Don't give up! Doug
