What year D9H is this? I love these with the enclosed cab💙. Also what location was this in? Does it have heat and a/c?

@robby844 Making noise does not mean it is running by itself. The starter was still turning the engine over the whole time. Kicking once or twice does not qualify as running.

@669jars Alex forgot to mention that this machine was still producing (in use) after 35 years. That should say something about how great Caterpillar machines are. The only reason it didn't start this time is because Alex didn't know the trick to cold starting a D353 engine. If you watch the second video it ran just fine.

This guy brings tears to my old eyes..If you don't know how to do something, you should ask someone who does.

@669jars Ahhh that was a completely relevant and topical comment. This is a 35yr old dozer with thousands of hours. A hard start is pretty much a guarantee. Cat builds great iron, they may not be leading the way in all fields you have to admit a company thats stayed the largest producer of iron for this long is probably doing something right.

@Gavin84w Gavin is also correct on this. I went back today to fire up the D9H beside it and it manages to finally catch on all cylinders. You'll see what the problem was. As for hitting the glow plugs while the engine is running... I never thought of that. Burnout

Remember the old saying "Where there,s smoke there;s fire' if any of you haybrains who think they know just a smidge about how D353 engines in D9H,s sound and work when fired up cold you would know that this is exactly what they are like untill you warm them up. I look at the condition of that machine and it looks a good unit to me for a D9H, that thing was running each and every time it was fired, sure not for long and the trick with those engines is to turn the glow plugs back on when it fires

@vantagetes It,s an old trick mate that some old guys showed me when i was a young guy!! now i am an old guy i can pass it on to the young guys haha! Just give the glow plugs a go for 30 seconds while she is cracking and it helps it clean up and then the throttle functions (usually!) as desired I appreciate whoever has done that gear up for the auction has restored it to factory standard and not black cabbed it cos' you know how much i love that!! Any idea what it went for at the auction?

She started fine ! I personally wouldn't crank quite that long on a starter but that's just me. Maybe just a bit of throttle to keep her running ?

Do D8's and D9's still have a pony motor? It's been so long since I have run one, I don't know.

The other thing a lot of these fellows likely aren't thinking about is the hydraulic governor on these ole saps which require oil pressure to go into fuel on position.

@GlobalMiningMachines Ok lets put this to rest I (Burnout) am the guy in the video. The dozer was running under its own power. The machine is not running on all cylinders which is why it would not respond to me moving the throttle lever. It was a thumbs up to the camera. And on this occasion, roby844 knows what he is talking about.

@robby844 robby844 is correct, the dozer is chugging under its own power the entire time.
