It's the shared experience that I love. Yeah, I "liked" them when my kids were into them. They put on a pretty good show- lots of cool positivity plus their support of the LGBTQ community in spite of some of them being mormon, but I couldn't put my finger on the missing component. It wasn't until about a year ago when I figured it out that they were the new coldplay. Nice sounding songs, but I have no idea of what the song is really about.

Personally Imagine dragons have just gone on a downward trajectory, whereas their sales went the opposite. I love their first album, genuinely one of my top 5 fav albums of the last decade or so. They were more melodic and just did them. Second album was good, had a lot of meaning and probably the best writing lyrically, still not Shakespeare though. And a lot of nothings songs around some really heartfelt ones. Very much about the reaction of the fame that came with success of the first album. Since then, I’ve enjoyed a a few songs but it’s very obvious they’ve gone ‘right, this is our formula that works to sell records’ and was all just a bit commercial. So much so that I haven’t listened to their latest album more than once, and only knew of the song you reviewed because of tiktok.

Came here to say this. Smoke and mirrors grew into my favorite album by them, especially with the deluxe tracks Warrior and Battlecry. (Wow maybe Justin Is onto something with the violence theme) That record had way more complexity and creativity than their recent stuff. They were never a top band for me but I never considered them rock either, which always made me laugh when people got butthurt about them. I’d dub them “arena pop”.
@adainjarrio
2 жыл бұрын
@@iLitTheSun Definitely not a Rock band. I think giving them a genre is difficult because their music doesn't sound like anything specific. I just call it Melancholic Music and as long as they keep making that the band will only ever be good but not great. My thoughts with S+M on first hearing it was that this band was going to be incredible, creativity that we haven't seen in so long but alas. I love Evolve and it's a great album in a bubble but for a band going for greatness it's the end of their best period. They're now stuck in limbo. Which is a shame because they're all talented musicians. A band like Royal Blood on the other hand has a perfect 3 first albums and they're definitely Rock and a bit underrated in my opinion.
@luKB01

I’m not the biggest fan of Imagine Dragons however, I do have to say that the genre of music they make, fits perfectly with what it’s being made for. They’ve done a few songs specifically with a project in mind. The enemy song is the intro for the Arcane series on Netflix and the audience that Arcane is targeted at does dictate the type of music that they would make. I think they’ve almost become a band that makes music for projects rather than just for the sake of making music.
@KimonFrousios
2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same. If you're gonna judge a song's meaning and reason of existence, you cannot ignore the context for which it was commissioned. The undecided chorus of Enemy makes perfect sense when one considers the protagonists in Arcane.

You're right! Imagine Dragons have done a lot of work with Riot Games to create poppy singles to support the release of their products for a few years now. the "Arcane" series itself comes from Riot's League Of Legends game universe. One of the members of Imagine Dragons plays League Of Legends and did a lot of promotion for the game and the championships a few years ago. They did the "Warriors" single back in 2017/8 as a tie in for the world championships in Asia. If they wrote the song for the arcane show exclusively, then the lyrics may well be in the context of the characters from the show/game. unfortunately if you're not familiar with the minute of the game world that Riot have come up with, its understandable that you're not going to translate well into the pandemic stricken music charts of 2021. Not that I am defending Imagine Dragons.... I find their music to be tedious and pretty much a perfect example of the sort of self congratulatory nepotism in an industry that is profiting from the 75 million records sales by sanitizing creativity for "what sells to the 18-30 demographic". I just thought it was worth adding some context to the points you made for the uninitiated

“It’s basically the Blue Man Group of songwriting” ….. that might be the funniest critique I’ve ever heard. Well put sir! You’re exactly right when you say that those who care about the art of lyrics there’s not much there for us.

Good assessment. I hear them a lot at work and they certainly aren't music that I vomit in my mouth to when I'm forced to listen to them...like some that will remain unnamed...but they just seem repetitive and formulaic to me. Meh. Funnily enough, my baby brother sent me this meme earlier this week that sums it up for me: "My local rock station: Youre listening to rock. Fucking rock. We're hard as shit. All the other stations are wimpy little snowflakes for not playing rock like we do. Hard rock. Rock and metal and fucking rock. Up next is Twenty One Pilots and Imagine Dragons" 😂🤣

Justin, your theme song has that lovely charm you would find on some mid 70's TV shows. It actually reminds me of that short theme on Charlies Angels that used to go on before the commercial breaks.

I would love to see you and Steve Perry write something together. I know it’s insane to think about but , listening to the way you both describe the composition of lyrics and song progression you’re both so similar. Also I’m selfish and would love to see two of my favorite vocalist collaborate 😅.

My 12-year-old daughter has loved Imagine Dragons for a couple of years now. I think they can craft a catchy pop song, but I do consider them, more than anything, a children's band. That said, I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Like most "Artists" these days, they write for jingles, movie soundtracks, ads, games etc. Standard formulaic lazy songwriting, no depth.. A Children's Band is a perfect description.

Love the video and your opinions. BUT I believe there is a reason for "They tell you you're the greatest but once you turn they hate us" - and you hit the nail on the head with your comment about having two different people writing the lyric. The main character of the TV show which this song was written for, has issues with split personality. That's why it actually fits the character really well, in my opinion.
