I’m the same “vintage” as you. And you are totally correct in what you say. Maggie Thatcher, milk snatcher, started the ball rolling by testing the water with a vicious act that deprived school children, particularly those from poorer backgrounds, of basic nutritional support while at school. This success gave her - and those who have come since - a workable action plan which they have been putting in place ever since. It started slowly, but over the years, with each successful outcome, they have sped the implementation, until it is now racing so fast it is hard to keep up. This has brought the country to a low that we would find hard to recognise at any other time in our history.

In prior centuries the poor weren't pitied; they were blamed for their poverty, with the culprit being immoral living - drink, gambling, being work-shy, ill, or disabled. You could injure yourself quite severely in the service of your employer or country and you were owed nothing, it was left to your family to take care of you. God help you if you were the head of a family who went to war or sea and came back minus a leg or an arm - potentially both you and your family would starve or freeze to death. But this is something we should be looking back at with abhorrence. Care for others is supposed to be a basic facet of a civilised society, but these are "Compassionate Tories".

If you are a good teacher then you have the potential to make an amazing difference to maybe hundreds of children and their parents. I know it doesn't help your situation now, but I am glad you are not still a single mum on welfare and that you are helping teach our children. Thank you. I also believe that your future self will reap the rewards of your choices in a way that you as a single mum never would have. It will get better because you have proved to yourself that you have what it takes to be more than you currently are. God bless you

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation are always worth following for anyone else who, like me, wants to bear witness to the suffering (and I'm not exaggerating) of the poorest in this country, some of whom are disabled and actually dying because they cannot afford their bills. This is what happens when corporate money dominates both politics and the mainstream media. Most of the political candidates with a real chance at power are handpicked to ensure the rich utterly dominate, and the vast majority of the country never even hears about it, because most of the media has been bought out by the rich and instructed to remain silent. In Australia, Kevin Rudd (a former prime minister) recently attempted to tackle this problem by trying to bring a royal commission against Rupert Murdoch's media empire in Australia. Seems to have fizzled out since I haven't heard about it in years, and nothing changed. Not there at least. We have only managed to oust our conservatives from government because Scott Morrison was too far up his own arse to remember you have to at least LOOK like you're on the public's side. He assumed conservative power was so guaranteed that he failed to understand that his party defunding emergency services and then running away to Hawaii while the ENTIRE COUNTRY LITERALLY WENT UP IN FLAMES would actually hurt his chances of re-election. He failed to understand the internet and mobile video cameras exist, and therefore people can see that instead of standing with bushfire victims in solidarity, he's literally grabbing people's hands, forcing them to shake his hand and then running away, so he can get photo ops in fire damaged towns. He failed to understand that saying "if you don't want to rent, just buy a house!" would paint him as tone deaf to the point of insanity. For the record, I think he's actually very intelligent, but his wealth and privilege caused him to be so far removed from reality that he didn't even know how to PRETEND to empathise with the public. He even took actual empathy classes! That's the only reason Australia managed to oust a conservative government Federally and in every state. But guess what, they'll be right back. Because almost no one actually pays attention to the policy of political parties. They hated Scomo, not the conservatives. Because just recently, 60% of Australian citizens voted to NOT install an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. 60% of Australia believes Indigenous Australians should have LESS power to combat the abuse they have suffered directly from the Australian government itself for two centuries. 60% of the country believes that the inequality Indigenous Australians suffer from is perfectly fine. That 60% is a conservative voting base ripe for the picking. The conservatives are coming back to Australia, because most conservative voters DON'T actually understand conservative policy. Channelling wealth to the top 1% does not help the other 59% of that voting group. But they vote for it anyway. Because corporate money owns the media, and corporate money sways political candidates, directly and indirectly. Corporate donations to political parties are legalised bribes and must be removed from every western nation. Media companies have become beholden to their rich owners and must be forced to divide into smaller companies run by different people to prevent media monopolies, and we should introduce laws that prevent anyone with wealth over a certain amount to have any position in media companies (I'm talking people worth hundreds of millions or billionaires), and prevent them from investing in these companies. We should also MASSIVELY raise the penalties for knowingly reporting inaccurate information. If the authorities suspect a media organisation of providing false information, the company should be forced to show their sources for that information. If they cannot adequately demonstrate that their story actually was based on research, and their reporting is demonstrably false, a couple of fines and slap on the wrist doesn't cut it. Prison time. Misinforming the public has drastic consequences and the media needs to be given their own drastic consequences to match if this is to be deterred. Fox News in America is probably the biggest example of what happens when a western government does not enforce consequences for misinformation. Give Sky News (Fox's Australian branch) enough time and we'll have Aussies storming Parliament House in addition of US domestic terrorists storming their White House.
