And after an exhausting but exhilarating and spiritually fruitful evening, we arrive at the joyful end of the Mass. I have heard different interpretations on the meaning of "Ite missa est" from various people, including my own friends in the Classics department, but generally, the point is to hear in it a commission: one translation is "She is sent." Thus, the "Deo Gratias" (Thanks be to God) makes much more sense than in the English translation: "Go the Mass is ended / Thanks be to God". I grew up wondering why we should thank God that the Mass was over if it was supposed to be important. Was it a chore and so we were happy to be finally done with the hour of sitting-standing-kneeling? Far from it! Thanks be to God that we are entrusted with a mission to participate in the salvation of souls! And so, why would we simply speak this fitting conclusion to Mass? Hence, the organ and the faithful with great jubilance respond to the command of the Priest who says, "Ite missa est" in the person of Christ, with great thanksgiving, singing "Deo gratias." And of course, it wouldn't be Easter without "Alleluia" after everything!
