I’m switching an upper on one of my ar’s and really want one of these, but I don’t see myself doing it more than this one time. Everyone has told me to stay away from the blocks so it’s nice hearing someone say if it’s just a one time thing I’ll be fine.

we have barreled uppers for a long time using the clamshell and they worked fine. Occasionally there can be a problem but I have yet to see one or even know someone that has seen it as well. I believe that the newer methods are WAY better but I don't fault someone that is not doing this on a regular basis on using the older tools that are a little more affordable.

Take what Google gunsmiths advise with a grain of salt... Not pointing any fingers. The best tool for this is going to be a Midwest Industries upper receiver action rod for the AR-15. For the AR-10, the Midwest Industries is also great and there is 1 more top notch one I cannot think of right now. Best thing to do is use both the action rod and the clam shell at the same time. Try and use a shell that is made to fit the firearm you are working on with the least amount of wiggle room as possible. ] Good luck.

I recently used my Real Avid Lug-Lok for my build, and loved it. Rock solid, and a very versatile piece of equipment.

I like real avid, they seem to redesign tools. I wish I knew about this tool a couple years ago.
