He had a few good episodes like Listen, Flatliners, Mummy on the Orient Express and my personal all time favorite, Heavensent. He was very much reminiscent of the Classic Doctors, which was the era where I originally got into the show. Tom Baker was my Doctor, but Pertwee was excellent as well. Capaldi was a great fan of Pertwee and I can see that influence in his portrayal of the Doctor. Capaldi had amazing range and could convey more with a raised eyebrow than many actors can with a lengthy monologue.

But in a bid to remain relevant to his professional circle, he became complicit by unlocking doors for the BBC, Chibnall, and now RTD2 and Disney. Capaldi’s run was tarnished. And now Moffat is helping prop up the corpse of Doctor Who in a version of “Weekend at Disn…uh…Bernie’s.” Better than what we’ve been given by RTD lately, but that’s a VERY low bar.

Actually, at least in my view, the problems set in when Tennant, not that he wasn't good, played the role as a reprise of his blokey Casanova. This introduced sexualisation into the character and although the Smith and Capaldi takes took a deliberate step back, the die was cast. Previous Doctors had been flirty on occasion but there was never any romantic attraction. The Doctor simply didn't think below the waist. Consider Baker's brilliant line to Catherine Schell in City of Death - "you're a very beautiful woman... probably." But once Tennant had Tennanted and Rose had Risen, it had to be about suppressed urges from then on. And to forestall any snit I'm as healthy as anyone else. But when I'm eating breakfast I don't imagine two rashers of bacon in a threesome with an egg. PS Anglicans aren't Catholic.

@@Paul-pr2ku To me the TV movie is to Who what Never Say Never Again was to Bond. Although I'm glad McGann got deserved chances later. It was also such a failure that the intended revival didn't happen. I'd also argue that 9's affection for Rose isn't romantic (she rescued him from war trauma and taught him to live again). The rest was post-10 but mostly very underplayed. 11 doesn't reciprocate Amy's attraction. River Song is an interesting one. "I'm from your future and believe me you love me - or will." I suppose the underlying premise is that casting the part younger - Tennant, Smith - made it harder for the Doctor to be non-romantic. And I also felt back in the day that Davison was too young although he grew on me, as did Tennant. And his incarnation was basically a worried prefect in charge of unruly kids.

Nobody cares if you make a show with a diverse cast. Just make an original show with an original IP and it's fine. The problem is that they don't do that. Instead, they take already established IPs and change the characters to fit an agenda. Then when people get upset, they gaslight them and call them names. The only "toxic people" are the ones ruining our beloved characters. And everyone knows why they don't make original IPs and use already hugely popular ones... It's because they know darn well that nobody will watch them.
@markemarkatfb

Compare the first two doctors of the classic era - Hartnell and Troughton, like chalk and cheese, but somehow both felt like different sides of the same character. So much of the style of the show changed, but it was still super nerd dad figure helps the good guys beat the bad guys. Now they are veering from uncool, dithering, useless Whitaker to pantomime 4th wall breaking, magical realism, "too cool for school" Gatwa. Neither of them feel like the doctor to me, or any sort of relatable character. It's not an IP problem, it's about making the lead so one dimensional that they seem to be spectators in their own show.

It was okay. Just okay. Middle-of-the-road by Moffat's standards: could've been better, could've been a lot worse. Better than the last two episodes, but worse than The Power of the Doctor (which, in my opinion, is a lot better than The Day of the Doctor and the 60th specials), which is my yardstick for judging the quality of future stories. The biggest problem I have is that they can't get the emotional storytelling right: if the Doctor cries in every other episode, it lessens the impact when something big and personal happens to him later on. There's a reason why Twelve breaking down with tears in his eyes in 'Heaven Sent' means something: because it's the culmination of emotion. Same with Nine losing his temper and self-control in 'Dalek': if he'd lost his shit earlier, it'd have lessened the impact when he faced off with the 'last' Dalek. By this point in Series 14, apathy has set in because there's no reason to care about anything, if anything can set off waterworks, because it's all treated as being of the same emotional value, instead of saving the tears for when it really matters: Ten losing Rose in 'Doomsday', Eleven losing Amy in 'The Angels Take Manhattan', Twelve grieving over Clara's death in 'Heaven Sent'. You save the tears, for god's sake, or nobody will give a damn.

I like the part in the previous episode where the Doctor said that during his battle with the toymaker his soul was split in two which caused him to bi-regenerate. In the hands of a skilled writer, this could actually be a great theme. The Doctor doesn´t "act" like the doctor because he literally is only half the Doctor. That could be used to explain him suddenly being afraid where he wasn´t before, or having emotional outbursts far past where it would have been expected. As alot of his internal for lack of better word "controls" are missing. Unfortunately RTD isn´t such a great writer that he could actually incorporate these themes. By the way never got to ask during your last livestream but Bowlstrek what is your opinion on Mark Bonnar´s The Eleven? Is he a character you enjoy or is he painful to listen to? Also would you like to see Mark Bonnar reprise his role as The Eleven on the tv-show?

We're at the point now where Steven Moffat is now somehow better than RTD. In my opinion, RTD shoulda just never returned if he was gonna be this crap! For me, Eccleston and Tennant will always be the best Doctors. What we got last year was NOT Tennant. I remember hating the Smith era at the time but in hindsight the plot arcs weren't that bad. At least Moffat had a vision. But that Impossible girl arc was horrendous. It's been a while since Moffat wrote something truly scary or proper Dr Who-related. Oddly this episode is the worse from a DW point of view. What is the role of the Doctor? To be the show's hero and solve the problem. What is the spirit of the show? Adventure with great sci fi/fantasy concepts. So Ep 1 "Snot Monster" - the concept? Baby farm left alone till the babies themselves take over. What does the Doctor do? Rescues the Snot Monster (okay...) and gets the station moving again. He is at least pro-active So Ep 2 "Drag Queen World Destruction Hour" - the concept? What is the joy of music could be removed from us? What does the Doctor do? Attempts to banish the evil. Has to get a little help from my friends (see what they did there? Clever huh...? huh? Huh?) but at least he was attempting to save the day. Now Ep 3 "I hate the Industrial Church Complex" - the concept? The Industrial Church Complex is BAD. I hate it. I am going to repeat every single Left Wing Talking Point and stamp my feet till you agree with me. What does the Doctor Do? Stands on a disco land mine and cries constantly. Who actually saves the day? An AI of a dead guy hacks into the mainframe of a different AI and switches everything off. Sure Ep 3 MAY have better acting... or not, but as a DW story where we have a cool concept and the Doctor does some hero stuff? FAIL. #RIPDoctorWhoThoughtsAndPrayers

@@shittowel How is the show being financed? All Disney? If so, Disney sees nothing from those numbers. I'm assuming the sub 2M is the Disney numbers. I think EP 3 was 2.04 Million.

@@shittowel one iPlayer view is anything over 30 seconds...so not necessarily very good data. It's also surprising the second episode got more iTunes viewer that the first one. That's counter intuitive. However at 1.45 million, it's no better than Jodie achieved and is still less than the 2 million that the Tennant specials managed. They're also the second and third worst modern Who audience size (only Jodie's Legend of the Sea Devils was worse). Worse still they still haven't managed to make up the Audience Appreciation Index data.

The father is not blind, he just has damaged eyes and the granny-bot deems his recovery time too high and so culls him. I kinda rather enjoyed this episode. Like stated, it’s leagues above the preceding bullshit.

Man, I always forget Twice Upon A Time. It should have been amazing. I was so looking forward to it (probably naively so, but still), but it was just a shake-down of the First Doctor instead. So sad. I didn't watch Boom, nor will I watch any more. At this point, I'm just laughing at the ratings. I'll stick with classic Who, I think. I was re-watching the newer stuff but I'm up to Kill the Moon and I really don't have the will to get through that thing again... and it's still better than anything after Capaldi's run...

Is dAngerman here because he's happy and he agrees with Bowlestrek or is he here because he's _dreadfully upset_ at someone highlighting why the show's losing popularity with the audience? I reckon it's the first option. He's absolutely delighted Bowlestrek is calling attention to the reasons why it's gone down the drain with the audience and fewer watching it. I truly believe dAngerman hasn't been crying for 7-years because of stranger's opinion because that would be obsessive, compulsive, like a child bawling their eyes out and stomping their feet in the playground.

Anyone who thinks Doctor Who will even remotely change before the BBC either collapses or changes staff from top to bottom is, isn't just coping its stock home syndrome at this point. I mean the fact I can say "The new actor playing the Doctor wants to twerk his enemies too death and the Showrunner not only defended it, but views it as such an important task, they both told fans to leave and touch grass if you have even a remote problem with it. And actually, fucking think FIVE NOT 2-3 PEOPLE WILL TUNE IN FOR EVER ONE PERSON WILL LEAVE BECAUSE OF THE MESSAGE DESPITE WOKE WHO'S RATING HAVE BEEN FALLING FOR ALMOST 10 YEARS STRAIGHT." and nothing I've said was a lie or stretch. I've heard rumors Dr. Who is going to get cancelled in 2025 and well if you know the story of "Old Yeller".... Thought is it the BBC so take that with a grain (or even a Police Box) of salt. I'm still betting some figure that represents Klaus and the UN will become the Doctor's friend helping him defeat the monster RTD has been building up since the Wild Blue Yonder is going to be a sledgehammer of a metaphor (or fuck it will be directly) all the anti-woke youtube critics, the "far right"/rightwing extremism and orange man before this train truly falls off the tracks.
