Lee Evans, Malcolm, is a man who had it all worked out. He worked like hell, doing Stand Up shows all over, accepting every Acting role, especially in Films. Made enough money to be able to retire early at 50 years old, so he could spend quality time with his wife and daughter. He was married for 30 years when he retired. Unlike "Malcolm" he really knew what he was doing.

Nice reference to Bernard Quatermass, the main character in a trilogy of sci-fi stories produced by the BBC (and broadcast live) in the 1950s. He also gets a namecheck in the 1988 story Remembrance of the Daleks. Movies were made of all three Quatermass serials, and the last one, Quatermass and the Pit, is a stone-cold classic.

So IMBD triva of this episode, about the buses. Both buses were meant to be intact throughout the story, but while one was en route to Dubai, it was badly knocked about at the docks by a crane driver who was careless with a container. So the film crew sent photos of the damage back to Cardiff and there the crew made similar 'alterations' to that bus so they would - almost - match. Then a few lines were added to the script to explain the sudden change in the buses's appearance.

RTD said that the 'Red Double Decker Bus in the desert' was an 'homage' to prolific sci-fi and contemporary fiction writer Paul Magrs who has written a number of expanded universe Doctor Who novels and audio dramas including the 1998 novel "Scarlett Empress" which introduced Iris Wildthyme, an old friend of the Doctor and occasional thorn in his side, who turns out to be a Time Lady with a TARDIS stuck in the form of a red London bus and they have an the first of several adventures on the desert planet of Hyspero. Oddly, Magrs has never written for the main TV show which is a great pity.

This episode + the next Doctor are basically filler episodes. And that’s fine when in context of what came before and what’s coming next. I don’t know if you know this (I personally don’t consider it a spoiler) but the next season, Season 5, is under a new showrunner Steven Moffat (who wrote Boom, silence in the library and other stories) so the current showrunner Russel T Davies created these specials to fill 2009 instead of having a gap year. Don’t worry the next few episodes definitely justify their existence. We’re also in HD now so that’s a big plus!

Harbo Wholmes channel recently did a thing on how there are only 7 types of Doctor WHO story, and yeah, this kinda falls into the Under Siege category and it may be a little too soon after Midnight being the same type. if i recall correctly the bus wasnt supposed to be damaged in this it got a little messed up in transit so they just tweak the script a little bit. ezpz. funny how things go sometimes. like obi-wan was supposed to train luke for all 3 films but having him sit the bench at the end of new hope seemed silly.. so kill him off... well now we got no mentor for empire strikes back... so now we create yoda to fill the void... can you imagine never having yoda? but yea pretty much a bottle episode but those are supposed to be to save money lol. can think of these 2 specials as pallet cleansers. the next 3 are pretty great though imdb has this and the last one at 7.4. next one is 8.8 followed by 8.2 then ending on 8.9 so if thats anything to go by... i feel like your opinions have been pretty on par with the imdb. though i dunno what number i would give a "mid" episode as mid of 10 would be 5 but 5 seems abysmal lol. i think we tend to forget anything above a 5 out of 10 is pretty darn good considering its over half. with all the bad content out there even mid can be decent. i always dismiss stuff thats got like a 6-7 but even being super cynical and nitpicky ive found some of the stuff that gets torn apart these days as being decent enough. like not much that makes me feel like i wasted time by watching i will say "the next doctor" and "planet of the dead" are on my skip list most rewatches. even on reactions i tend to skip over them just because imo they dont really move the over all narritive along when 10s departure has been foreshadowed this whole season and thats without you guys even being exposed to all the press going around. keeping in mind it was almost impossible for us watching live to not know who the next doctor and companion were cause BBC loves to hype up the changes to get butts in seats.

Yeah, I'm with Rekkai that this is a very mid episode. Of the S4 Specials, it definitely ranks at the bottom for me, as I do feel that at least The Next Doctor had a well-acted villain, and I enjoy the twist that comes with the reveal of who the next Doctor really is. This episode...meh. The only thing I really enjoy is Malcom, I think he's fun, and alao kind of serves as a stand-in for a lot of fans, how they might react if they actually met the Doctor, knowing who he is and what he can do. A proper fanboy reaction from him, and I think it helps bring some levity to an otherwise rather slow episode. Personally I am glad that Christina did not become a companion, their dynamic would have been grating to watch over more than one episode. She is in many ways very similar to him, but in a way that feels caricature-like, and we really need some contrast in personalities to help drive the story and relationship dynamics. I also agree that the Doctor is still feeling the pain of Donna's loss. Losing Rose was tough, but although he couldn't travel with her anymore, she was safe and living her life based on what she learned from him. Martha leaving was the best choice for her, and the Doctor knows she can always call him if she needs him. She's moved on, but she's not beyond his reach. But Donna... Donna was the one who tracked him down, because she knew her life would be better if she was traveling with him. Seeking him was her way of seeking internal change for herself. With the Doctor, she learned to believe in herself. Taking that away leaves the insecure version of Donna who shouts at the world because she doesn't think she's worth hearing otherwise. And that's not even mentioning all the near-companions who died helping him before they could travel with him. Lynda from season 1, Astrid, Reinette (Madame de Pompadour), River Song, Jenny... So much loss, and his own hanging over his head too, it's no wonder he's closed himself off to a new partner-in-crime, even a literal one. Well, really looking forward to the next episode! It's easily the best one of the specials and possibly a top ten contender for my personal favorites. Cannot wait for that reaction!

Thus is meant to be informative, rather than a lecture, as I know you guys tend to be light-hearted, but I thought you may find this insight into U.K. life interesting. You may not be aware but British Police officers are not allowed to carry firearms, hence the reason they couldn’t shoot. There are specialist firearms officers, consisting of about 5% all officers, but there are restrictions on when and where they can be deployed, and very strict rules on when a weapon can be fired. If an officer does injure or kill with a firearm an investigation is held, and if necessary criminal charges can be filed as in the case of the killing of Chris Kaba.
