This has always been one of my favourite episodes and really shows how, especially with the 10th Doctor, how is ego can really spiral out of control when he doesn’t have anyone to keep him in check. Even though you know how the episode is going to turn out from the start, the suspense of The Flood infiltrating and picking off the crew still get you. GOATED episode

I wonder if it was inspired by the scene David Fincher liked to insert in his films (in Alien 3 and later on Se7en), where the hero is at the mercy of the villain, but the villain lets them live to better serve their purpose.

This is my favourite episode of doctor who. It shows how bad the doctor can get without a companion to calm him down and that he needs someone to stop him time to time or the time lord victorious would make him unstoppable. Also I loved The Flood (water zombies) they were such good villains I’ve wanted them to return but now I realise it’s better they stay as one of villains cuz they were so good 10/10 episode and story for me. We are in the endgame now for 10 🥲 the 4 knocks era continues. Great reaction guys 👌

In my opinion, the reason why the Doctor tries to break this fixed point in time is: if he manages to break this one, he will also be able to break his own fixed point and that he has been told, he will die. The appearance of the Ood reminds him that he was told his song was ending and in the previous episode he was told that it will end after hearing four knocks.

Rekai and his analysis regarding Donna’s absence is so spot on - it really help compose the Doctor to have a companions but no one has done it better than Donna who gave him a real moral compass. I think you’re also right that the companions would have left instead of change this fixed point knowing the consequences but the Doctor’s ego is in full fledge and had it not been for Adelaide’s sacrifice, I think he would have been treading on the path similar to the Master. Tennant’s performance in this was superb as was the rest of the case. But he just oozed power which you can see forming that dark side in the show Jessica Jones when he plays Killgrave. Superb episode, super entertaining and thrilling and thanks to Syntell and Rekai for chopping it up so well!

9 also called himself the winner of the time war in Dalek. But in that episode it was anger derived from his fear and guilt over the time war. A shaky step on his road to healing that rose guided him through. With 10: he has no rose. No companion. In fact It’s the tragedies that he’s endured in the time since the time war that have broken him here. The pain he’s had with the loss of Donna, Martha and Rose has caused him to finally break down. Those 2 episodes at the bookends of RTDs run are basically telling the same story of the inner anger of the Doctor. And this won’t be the last time we see that side of him. 10/10 episode. They also tried to make this episode part of a multi media event in 2020 across different comics and audio books where the time lord victorious 10th doctor crossed over with the 8th doctor before the time war (the doctor who starred in doctor who movie and is the flagship doctor for the audiobooks). The results were mixed.

One of my absolute favourite episodes of the 10th Doctor & I continually rewatch it every year!! The story, the supporting cast, especially Lindsie Duncan is just superb!! Not many stories are told about fixed points & this is of course one of them. When each character dies it hurts, a gut hurt & those final moments between 10 & Adelaide are just incredible. That's how close our Doctor can be to becoming "The Master" & a companion will always ground him. A spellbounding episode, just adore it!! 🥰

People keep saying "Oh it's just the loss of Donna." Nah. He had the most bittersweet semi-breakups with Rose for the 3rd time. Not even having the courage to say what he wanted to. Lost a best friend who taught him how great it was to be human. And lost someone who treated him like a son. Everyone in his life is gone, except for The TARDIS that keeps him safe. This is definitely in my top ten for episodes, although I haven't ever sat down to consider which ones exactly rank there, Waters of Mars is absolutely a stand-out. For me it's in a similar tier to Midnight, especially as both episodes give us a different side to the Doctor, and a cast of humans who are more wary than trusting of him. This is definitely the lowest moment for the Doctor so far, where his grief and loneliness mix with his ego, to where he truly does believe that, if he is the one to survive, alone, then he must get some benefit from that, right? No other Time Lords to stop him, no human companion to act as conscience, not even the Daleks, for all thei cockroach-like persistence can stop him, so he must be Lord over Time, right? That he gets brought quickly back to reality by Adelaide shows how strong her convictions are, and humbles the Doctor to realize that that's all it takes to stop him. One human, one action, and he has no control over anything after all... least of all avoiding his inevitable demise. I agree with Rekkai that this is the Doctor because of Donna's loss. We see a hint of the Time Lord Victorious in the Runaway Bride, when he drowns the Racnoss' children. Donna had to tell him "You can stop now," and that was what snapped him out of it. I think that it was Donna then, and later on Donna in Pompeii begging him to save someone, that influences this version of the Doctor. No one is there to stop him, and also he saved people from a fixed time before, why shouldn't he be able to do that again? Also I agree that the detail of Adelaide dying on Earth probably didn't affect things too much, in terms of the flow of time. There's the real explanation, of course, with the Doctor. But more than that, I can see it being a mystery people puzzle over for decades to come, one of those strange details in a strange, tragic story that spawns conspiracy theories and the like.
