Great job getting the old girl back on the road. Gotta love seeing your young fella spending time with you while your working on these old bangers. You''ll be amazed at how much he really learns, not just about cars but about about being practical in his future life. I spent time with my old man at his work, at home in the shed and out and about. It's only now I realise how good that was for me. Kids absorb more than you teach them. Reckon your young bloke is set for life.

Mate, you do a good job with your simple explanations, which we all learn from. I particularly like your persistence with stock parts, namely the Rochester, it would be so easy to do a LS conversion or drop the ride height and put some wide wheels on it. Glad you are teaching us while keeping it stock.

Absolutely loved the WB Statesmans. Such a majestic car...and every bit as good looking as a Merc or BMW of the time. I used to drive them brand new when I was working for Thrify Rent A Car in the 80's. I remember how light it was to steer with so much assistance coming from it's power steering - yet so direct because of the tight steering ratio. Was a lot of fun in the wet!

I worked in the factory when these were being made. I worked in the paint shop and probably painted your car I think it's Atlantis blue and when I worked overtime in the vehicle assembly plant I got to drive them off of the line and park them in the paddock. In the 80s I had a HJ Statesman Deville every time I had it tuned up I would go and check plug 8 witch was right up against the Aircon-heater box and was a real bugger to get out. I made a specially angled spanner to get to it and 9 out of 10 times they left the old plug in and said they couldn't get it out. She was a beauty too White with a white vinyl roof and imitation chrome spoke wheels it looked like Then Prime minister Malcom Frazer's car I even had a drunk throw a bear bottle at me once he thought I was him.
the way I do that plug is I put the plug socket over the plug from underneath the car and crack it open with a ring spanner over the plug socket, then just remove by hand - found it easy that way (pref a cold engine!) Gu.ess everyone has their own methods

Brings back a lot of memories. My father had a couple of Statesmans and I had a '69 Premier with the 5litre V8. Probably did 90% of the work on them myself. Kept the Premier running for over 500,000 miles before some idiot parked a Landcruiser in the back of it. Yeah you have to learn by doing. My father was a good bush mechanic and I helped him rebuild a car when i was about 10. He taught me a lot and my son is a far better mechanic than I am.

Great stuff again. You've stirred the tip jar. Rochester uses needle valve metering in jets like a 2 stroke dirt bike. Wind plugs and bolts in backwards first, feel for the clicks with your eyes closed. Sounds silly I know. Try this on your next sump plug with your eyes open. Pointer finger in centre of plug, wind it out till it clicks twice. Then go up periscope. Level expert oil changes coming your way when you get it right. Not one drop of oil on the ground. Hit up a fridge place for a 6 pack of fridge boxes while learning. 24 free leak catchers. Buy some universal plastic transmission plugs. Best tool ever, saves on tyranny fluid. Use card board templates on first time tear downs. Sketch a basic shape of the patient dots where bolts/ screws have been living. Poke them in their home, this is a great stripped bolt detector as well, dunk in petty 1st if too oily. This will reduce the OCD gift we both share. My old taught me the greese spigot bearing exit trick, but bread is no mess at all. (DO NO use on LS engine family ! ) I'm sure you have a bolt bucket, a great bolt hole chaser is a bolt with 3 cuts through the threads 120° apart. A new plug with earth strap cut off makes a great spark checker. Just don't ever drop it. Holden V8' have design flaw in the timing cover, when they corrode coolant goes cranky. It's a bitch to diagnose. Water pumps that have been sitting, the bottom of the shaft rust's like exposed valve stems. Then it's seal gets reemed over sized, you know happens then. Don't use the pump that looks like an alternater. Next you want to siphon fuel push the fuel out of the tank / jerry can with air. It takes bugger all pressure when the air volume in the vessel is small. That's how my old boy would clear or prime a diesel fuel line. I watched him do it to a Mack truck, and old fuel cap with a long shade valve sikaflexed in. 5 PSI is too much, but it won't be a problem unless there is a leak. Cause 100 square inches of fuel surface is 500 PSI of home made GERNI as he told me. How do you know Dad ? Compressed air is the most dangerous shit ever next to Acetylene. Check out MBE cylinder heads for valve / spring / inlet manifold porn. One last tip Holden V8 timing chain stretch will have big movement of crank back and forth before the rotor button moves, this check works on any chain drive. Stubborn high torque balancer bolts like a VN V6, you can place a tube over a long breaker bar (single hex socket) resting On passenger side chassis rail. Use a charged jumper box aswell, the starter motor will crack the bolt and wind it out quicker than you can say i wish I filmed it. Great work, I'm stealing your carb on screw driver trick.

Hi, a tip if you are interested. When installing a new seal, it is good practice to put a bit ot gease or oil on the seal face. This will aid in bedding the seal in and will prevent it binding on the shaft. Done this for years, and found the seals last longer...

Well mate , you know that car as a holden, while in the states it is a Chevrolet. Chevrolet engineers found that the car required a check valve on the fuel filter to prevent this very thing from happening. Remove the fuel inlet fitting from the carburetor and check to see if it has the right filter. Great video! {edit} Just from one car guy to another, a piece of 3/8 fuel line slipped over the porcelain on the plug makes it easier to start the thread proper. Also it helps to protect from breakin' if you work over a concrete floor and fumble the plug. I admit to fumbling " a couple" or so.

Penetrol, after sanding down. But you must put something over it. I left it bare for a few months and the rust was starting to come thru, but i live only 200m from the beach, my home gets covered in salt.

Hi Like your channel bit more like a normal human. I use Duralex paint, old aussie company before dulux existed in OZ , "rust convert", great product water based can be left as a primer and stays stable. Great thing some other ones I have used dry up in the container this one remains liquid. buy direct from them in Rydalmere NSW

I've been looking for other rust convertor brands, but googling them is impossible. EBay has phosphoric acid, 90% pure for cheap, but I'd love to try some gel or a way to make it gel
