In this video tutorial, Steve with Upstart Epoxy takes you through part 2 of this awesome bar top build! This video features the curved "L" shape part of the bar. Since the customer wanted it to have some curvature we needed a curved form too! We started out by de-barking the wood as seen in the first video, (if you haven't checked that out, it can be found here: • 19 FOOT Live-Edge Epox... ). After de-barking the wood we have to create the form. By measuring out the initial dimensions of the table onto a piece of smooth plywood we were able to cut out the base from a sheet of plywood.
Since the form was going to be curved, we needed a material that would be able to adjust on the sides! That material ended up being aluminum roofing siding to make the sides of the mold. We made sure to put some Tyvek tape after measuring out the overall length of the form. Screw in the form into the base of plywood and bam! You have your curved form. For any minor areas where leaks could appear we used a cardboard/Tyvek tape combo and used silicone to keep them in place. This was a pretty unique shape, so we had to get creative!
After creating the form we put the 2 pieces of wood that would make up this half of the bar top and poured a thin layer of table-top before we even poured any Deep Pour by Upstart Epoxy. The reason for this was to seal up any potential areas the epoxy could leak under the wood. This was a great preventative measure that worked very well!
After that initial layer had cured it was time for the Deep Pour. We mixed up several gallons for this portion of the same Blue Green by Upstart Epoxy and copper pigment as well to match the first half. We wanted the design to somewhat resemble that of the first half of the bar, so we swayed and moved the epoxy around with a heat gun.
Now all that was left was to pour the clear Deep Pour for this half of the bar. We will save that for Part 3!
After this step, we went ahead and poured the clear Deep Pour for the initial 11ft piece of the bar. It poured perfectly and after about 30 minutes turned perfectly clear! Upstart Epoxy is seriously impressive. We gave this piece about 48 hours to finish curing, and then the hard work began!
We took the 11ft piece outside and began to plane the top of it. This is to make sure it is level with the epoxy and the bar top remains flush. Once you plane it, you can use a belt sander to remove any excess high points, and then finally move on to your traditional sander. Plane, belt-sand, and sand from 60-220 grit gave us our best results. We also used a grinder with a shaping tool to create a matching live edge with that of the wood per the customer's request. This allowed the bar top to have a really neat and cohesive live-edge look to it.
The next step for that piece will be a seal coat, and that'll also be in part 3 of this awesome bar top build. It takes a lot of time, so stick with us, and we cant wait to see you in the next one!
