Episode 2: In the heart of Madagascar, the challenge of progress, the immense asset of youth
This 3-week stay in Madagascar reflects 3 phases:
1) The shock of encountering such distress among the population whose poverty rate is among the highest on the planet. This extreme distress grips the guts and leads to strong compassion;
2) The rebound in the discovery of the interior of the country, of the agrarian life of rice farmers and zebu breeders, artisans, traders;
3) The incredible energy of young Malagasy people who are lucky enough to be educated.
As a reminder, Madagascar, sometimes nicknamed “The 8th continent”, is calling out.
It is a unique country that is both African due to its connection to “East Africa” and very influenced by all the countries of the Indian Ocean. In fact a very hybrid population where, as for Reunion Island, the first immigrants only arrived a millennium ago.
It is an island of 587,041 km2 (as a reminder, 643,801 km2 for France), populated by 29 million inhabitants. The birth rate is very high there. The population is 70% agricultural.
I focused on the central part of the country and traveled on the famous RN7. I left Tananarive towards the west to visit the famous “Allée des baobabs” near Mondorava. Change of course, to the east, by train, where I listened to the roar of the Indian Ocean and interacted with the Vésu fishermen. Then to the east, further south to walk in the Isalo National Park and meet the Baras, zebu breeders. And, the highlight, I stayed at the Picot high school in Antsirabé where I made images on order from Viviane, the director.
Yes, I spent (a lot) of time in bush taxis! I had read “Madagascar is the ideal destination for those who are ready to sacrifice comfort to embark on the adventure that any trip to the “land of the Ancestors” constitutes, I confirm!
Let's go !
