Season 2, Africa - 3) South Africa: Drakensberg, Apartheid, Street Art, Safari

After Madagascar, one of the poorest countries, I moved to the most unequal country on the planet, South Africa.
In South Africa, the subject of first peoples is simple. We are here in the cradle of humanity. Archaeological sites testify to the existence of Australopithecus, Homo Habilis, Homo Erectus and, finally, Homo Sapiens.
The subject of Apartheid is contemporary. I was keen to fully understand this detestable “civilization” based on a structured hierarchy between races. And I even more wanted to know the situation to date in 2024. I hope that the text and the video will enlighten you. I will not hide from you that South Africa is very far from a “Rainbow Nation” harmony as desired by Desmond Tutu.
I attached myself to Johannesburg, the insecurity was difficult to manage but ultimately, I found a (small) space of freedom and autonomy there and met some great people there.
The Blyde River Canyon and the Drakensberg were havens of tranquility, of hikes, of encounters, of breathing, of peace.
The wildlife of the gigantic Kruger wildlife park was benevolent, often indifferent, sometimes curious, never threatening. We were at her house, locked in our vehicles and, in the evening, in barricaded camps.
Paradoxically, I have more hopes for the Malagasy people than for the South Africans. I quote the words of a Zimbabwean couple I met in Zimbabwe, “no one really feels good in South Africa”.
Let's go ! @marcLegroux
