This first stage of the season of my Tour du Monde (TdM) of the southern hemisphere enchanted me. I was guided by Marine, my niece who was in Guyana last year when I started this TdM and whom I found with pleasure.
The first very good surprise was to discover an island that had only been populated for around 400 years. Immigration has arrived from the south, the north, the east, Asia, Africa, Europe and constitutes a melting pot where everyone can claim to be Reunionese simply by virtue of being born here. The diversity of the population there is incredible.
Like Guyana, Reunion Island is hybrid. Reunion has the status of an overseas department (DOM) and as such benefits from French conditions; health, education, social protection, justice, infrastructure, etc. Available to a population of incredible diversity, what a great opportunity!
Nothing beats setting foot on a territory to really feel it. On foot, of course, for 3 hiking-treks, but also by car to tour the Island and understand its dimensions and morphology. The walls are steep on this “rock” where you go easily from altitude 0 to more than 3000 meters in just a few steps. It is rare to take trails with slopes of more than 20%.
NB: since my stay on the island, cyclone Belal has passed (mid-January 2024), I will let you find out for yourself about its consequences.
Ahead !
