Thanks again, and I've tried all those. The only position I can at least get some relief is on the belly, unaffected leg bent, affected side foot pointed out the opposite side. Of course, unconsciously moving in my sleep will always wake me up because the pain returns immediately.

As a side note, I love the way the physio uses her hands, it really does help with my understanding; adding a visual element I suppose. Excellent & easily accessible health promotional advice.

Personal Experience : I slept + spent most of the day hours on my preferred Left side on the floor on folded blankets . The cushoning of the blankets decrease so fast. This lasted 3 weeks. Suddenly ( overnight) i developed severe piriformis / sciatica ( Severe ...but strange symptoms such as walking ok for 30 seconds ,then severe pain in one spot of the foot ). It was probably piriformis spasms as the pain stopped when i stretched my left thing.... the problem lasted a week or so........ Now , a year later, I still am not comfortable sleeping on my peferred left side. The whole left hip area ,bursa,,,,,muscles,,,and all ,,,is not the same.

Sometimes regular pillows will not do it b/c they sink. I had to get a thick body pillow with foam that doesn't sink to put between the legs and that's how the pain subsided.

Ali you’re absolutely brilliant. You’re completely describing me at the moment. The tips and information you’ve given are so good. I have severe outer hip pain on my right leg this last two months and it’s all a bit complicated due to the sudden lack of help walking my dog twice a day due to my friend who shared the walking leaving the country. As for Crossing legs - Ouch. I am always standing with legs apart to give me balance and relieve pain. The worst for me is climbing up hills and the stairs. I have to walk up like a toddler. (Can’t raise the right leg into the flex position without stiffness and pain). I need to book sessions with you ! I also have DDD. X-ray just came back. Gluteals are weak and have decreased in size these past couple of years and I have a ventral hernia.

Thank you for sharing, I have hip bursatis in my right hip and an herniated disc and sciatica in my left leg, I've used a pillow under my legs but still pain through sciatica, would of been good if I don't have a bulged disk then I can sleep on the left. I have put a pillow under my legs when I sleep on my back with the sciatica.

If my right hip has the bursitis and I want to sleep half on, half off (last demonstration), dies my right hip go on the pillows or on the bed?
@SportsInjuryPhysio
Күн бұрын
You can do it in any way - with that position, the idea is that it should allow you to sleep pain free with either hip on it because it does not place direct pressure on either of them. In reality it is often only comfortable for a while and then you need to change and switch over. Experiment and see what works best for you.

Is it possible that sleeping on the same side of your body on a *very* hard mattress can also lead to such irritations?

@@stardawgbro9201 .....I see there's no answer to your query. Sleeping on a hard mattress is not good, but you do need a firm mattress, and I use a Feather bed topper on top of the mattress, and a heated mattress pad. This combination works wonders, and using a pillow between your knees can help, because it will take the pressure off. ( as she demonstrated) . I also do a few hip strengthening exercises, which do help.

This is what happened to me. One night I went to bed and the next morning I woke up with an injured hip. The pain was in my lateral trochanteric area. Felt like a sprained or torn muscle. It was awful and I could barely flex my thigh in any direction for several hours that day. The pain continued for several days even as symptoms gradually reduced. Once the pain was gone I was left with stiffness in the hip that could be triggered or perceived when putting on the sock for that leg. Crossing the foot over the opposite knee was painful and still doesn't feel right. It's been 8 weeks since that incident. My bed is likely the main culprit. I have a firm mattress with 6" of latex toppers covering it. But the toppers are old and worn out. They compress easily and no longer provide adequate support or cushioning. Like most people, I am a side sleeper and the hip that got hurt that night was the hip that I sleep on. After about two hours of bearing my weight the current latex foam I use simply flatten like a pancake. The discomfort causes me to toss and turn during the night in an effort to become comfortable. Obviously, the solution is to buy a new bed and/or new latex toppers. So I have ordered a new 3" latex topper. The cost, for me at least, is considerable. I just paid $400 for this topper and I may need to add another 3" later to dial in the desired comfort which would push the cost to $800 all in. A comfortable night's sleep is not something to skimp on. Whether your bed is the cause of your hip pain or not an uncomfortable or old bed can exasperate the underlining condition and interfere with healing.

@@Nivek_Fartswamy I just wanted to give an update on my situation. It wasn't nearly as severe as yours and after adjusting my sleeping position it went away relatively quickly. Now I'm laying on a "halfway between side and belly"- position or on my back, wich does require some time to get used to. Hope you'll get better soon.

Dumb question: on the third position, which leg is on the cushion? I slept all my life on either side but especially the "bad one" and with hip adducted and loved it. Can't really sleep on my back. I am now sleeping on my front and it's ok but I wake up with painful tingling arm from compression.. will try the suggestions :)
