I grew up with many Mormon friends. The day my best friend got his calling for his mission was one of the saddest days of my life. I cried my eyes out because I knew once he came back it would never be the same. This was a person who for seven years of my life I was in constant contact with and we told each other everything. I knew enough that I knew while on his mission they would have a complete hold on him and I would just be another sinner. Sure enough after he came back from his mission he wanted nothing to do with me except try to convert me. I mourn for that friendship almost everyday. I miss my friend so much and I hate that this religion has taken him and so many of my other friends because I’m not “worthy” enough anymore.

So much devastation, loss of family, forced to make a choice when sometimes they don't even know the world except for being told it's not for them. That there was no better calling than being a mother, even more than being the prophet, which is the biggest load of garbage I've ever heard, and that 'behind every great man, is a greater woman. It didn't help that every other family in our Ward were either related, or have been friends for several generations, but my family wasn't a part of that. Almost every person my age were either dating, or married as soon as they were legally able to, but we weren't a part of that. @@Time_Is_Left most bishops at BYU (students have their own separate wards) call you in for a meeting if you miss at least 3 weeks and they won’t renew your Ecclesiastical Endorsement (which you have to have to go to school) if you miss too much church. There’s also a strong emphasis on “ministering”, which is sometimes done in good faith but mostly involves keeping tabs on people. Additionally, students in leadership callings within your ward (women’s group leaders, men’s group leaders, etc etc) will check up on you to make sure you’re “doing ok” (going to church). And if none of THOSE get you, one of your roommates will definitely rat you out (and at BYU/BYUI at least, it’s 6-8 to an apartment). It is absolutely without a doubt a surveillance state. He was treated like royalty, and it was incredibly obvious how much he and his wife enjoy that power and deference. Actually another highlight was that my uncle had discovered this old gravesite and had ripped out all of the overgrown trees so folks could visit it. I found a tombstone that is difficult to read, but it clearly has a name and ‘Wife of Joseph Smith’ on it, but the name doesn’t appear on the list of wives Joseph was known to have…. About the mission, you actually can be denied for health issues, including mental health. This has become increasingly common in recent years as more and more missionaries are sent home early due to mental health issues, which causes many difficulties for them, their companions, and the higher-ups. So they want to try and prevent it. However, a mission is an extremely stressful and sometimes traumatizing environment so it can be triggering for people who are predisposed to mental health issues.

Fun fact: Peace Corps is the same way. You can be disqualified due to mental illness, you can be medevaced against your wishes for asking for mental health support while in county, and there is no doctor patient confidentiality between Peace Corps therapists and Peace Corps Volunteers. It really disincentivizes PCVs to ask for help and be honest with their therapists when they know that if they're too real, they'll get sent home. Peace Corps says it's because PCVs are physically and socially isolated and at a higher risk level for suicide, so taking/keeping mentally ill PCVs is unsafe. Which is true, but I would argue that Peace Corps service is inherently mentally and emotionally taxing and that expecting volunteers to handle that without any reliable mental health support is ridiculous.

i know a fella who was baptized into the mormon church by missionaries because he didn’t realize what was up at first and just thought they were hanging out and then by the time they got him to the water he was too polite to decline. he’s never gone or worshipped or nothing just got baptized on accident out of an abundance of politeness. i hope those missionaries are doing okay wherever they are

Hello! Yeah, I even reached out to apologize to Jordan and McKay after I watched the video to apologize. I had no idea I talked so much; I swear, it was just excitement and nerves! I think I got more self aware as the video went on though so hopefully it ends better than it begins lol. Either way, thanks for watching!

@@jamesfundiefridays4311 I understand. I used to do that so much at university. A boon for others during tutorials, who had not studied the subject, a pain in the arse at all other times: especially parties, when I would start off very loud, and morph into 'pathetic flirt' mode.

The story about working with Mormons being pleasant reminded me of the one time I had people come to our door. My husband was wearing a Sigur Rós shirt and one of the Mormons was super pumped about it. The other Mormon didn’t know who they were so his friend totally roasted him for being lame. 10/10 proselytizing, would lead on Mormons again.

@itscassexy

Just wanna let you know, the mainstream Mormon church really really really tries to distance themselves from anything polygamist because they've been persecuted for the practice in the past and it's also really not a good look for the Mormon church to be cuddling up with polygamists because it casts the church in a negative light. In fact, there have been several instances of mainstream Mormons who were excommunicated for researching/practicing polygamy... So I think it's highly unlikely that Mitt would want to protect polygamist people or even that he has polygamist friends. Obviously that's just my informed (I've grown up in the Mormon church in Utah - left ~ 1.5 years ago) speculation on it, so it could be true. Based on the Mormon church's track record though, I doubt any hardcore Mormon will hold any sympathy for polygamists. :)

I actually grew up in the community of christ they changed their name because of the confusion between LDS, FLDS, and RLDS (the last being the former name). What I was told was the seashell temple was build to represent inner and outer reflection of yourself and the world in pursuit of peace and the congregation I grew up with was extremely accepting of different viewpoints something I always appreciated growing up
