Exploring New Jersey Section 6 on the Appalachian Trail
Millbrook Rd to Delaware Water Gap, PA
We continue our series on How To Section Hike the Appalachian Trail through New Jersey with a close-up look at Section 6.
We hiked this on September 17, 2023. We finally finished our adventures on the AT through New Jersey with a spectacular hike that included some of the best views, a fire tower, a supply store, a run-in with trail stewards, a glacier lake, a backpacker campsite and a harrowing walk along the Rt 80 bridge into PA. After an initial steep climb we were rewarded with a great view at the Catfish Fire Tower. The next couple of miles along the ridgeline provided fantastic southeasterly views of valley communities in New Jersey. Then it was time for a quick detour to AMC Mohican Outdoor Camp where we took advantage of the facilities and had a quick peek at all the gear and supplies available at the store. After that short break it was time to get back up onto the ridgeline and make our way to Raccoon Ridge. This might just be the best views along the trail in New Jersey. From here you can look out over a reservoir to the east and also to the west where the Delaware River and Pennsylvania come into view. Then something amazing happened! We came across a group of trail stewards who were painting the iconic white blazes along a section of the trail. They were kind enough to explain the process to us and let us watch them in action. So, if you've ever wondered how it's done and who does it, you can watch the magic happen here! We had lunch at Sunfish Pond, a beautiful glacier lake that's right along the trail followed by a quick stop at the Backpacker Campsite. Rain started rolling in during the long descent down to Rt 80 but we stayed pretty dry as there was enough tree canopy above to protect us. From the parking lot at Rt 80 you can find the Red Dot Trail that climbs Mt. Tammany. This is one of the top hikes in NJ and it's best to take it on by itself instead of trying to include it with this AT section. We have a video on our site explaining how to hike Tammany and recommend viewing that first. By the time we got out onto Rt 80 the rain had stopped and we were able to finish up without getting soaked. Walking the Rt 80 bridge into PA is a bit unnerving to say the least. There's was nothing more than a short barrier between us and several lanes of traffic screaming by! We did make it safely to the other side of the bridge where we rejoiced in completing our hikes across NJ. This was a major accomplishment for all of us as we were not used to hiking such distances. Our plan to hike it in sections worked out so well that we are looking to do the same in New York next year!
Here we show you all the details from available parking throughout this section of the trail to all the points-of-interest to see along the way.
A final trail activity summary is included at the end showing the mileage splits, elevation gain and duration.
