Just got mine recently. Not my first experience with a .454, but it's my first Ruger wheel gun. I've wanted the Alaskan for a while, but when I saw this came with scope rings, I thought it was a perfect compromise between fast draw and scope-ability for short range/pistol hunting seasons. I already have a .45 Long Colt SAA, so ammo is a non-issue for me. My son has a .454 and I know what it feels like, so that's a non-issue, too.

As a couple other comments it is named after a river in Alaska, it is a beautiful sidearm, remember gun control means use both hands on that handcannon.

very true, it is a blast. I found HSM 325 grn, bear load to be very enjoyable to shoot, lots of lead behind it, and decently controllable. I believe the bigger bullet at slower velocity still has plenty of punch but doesnt give large muzzle rise. I shot through a box of 50 in pretty quick fashion and had alot of fun with it while doing it.

I liked this revolver, however, i made the mistake of wanting a different gun ( Desert Eagle) and traded it. Now i wish i had it again and they cost more now than when i bought it. But on the plus side, i did get a taurus raging bull 8 inch 44 mag, and the think is a tack driver. Ruger quality is much nicer, but raging bull was cheaper and does very well. I just got a marlin 1894 44 mag to pair with it, so i am with you on that. Best of luck in your choosing. But in all honesty the 44 mag raging bull is a nice gun too.

heck ya, i need some single actions as well. 45 lc is a great round under rated these days. It can do alot. In michigan we dont have too many bears, especially in the south. They have wandered down with confirmed sightings in flint area( where i am from) But was only a stray male bear here and there just looking for food or females. We got a metric ton of coyotes, I have seen packs of 8 or more right outside my house. They are decent size too, lots of food for them in the agricultural areas. luckily they dont take to much firepower to dispose of.

Congratulations on your new Ruger. I purchased the Ruger Super Redhawk 454 Cassul with the 7.5 inch barrel off of Gunbroker. They said it is a rare 454 . The stainless steel is a shade darker than yours and most Super Alaskan Ruger 454's are bright stainless. I noticed the trigger on mine is bright stainless but the rest of it is a darker shade. Can anyone help me out with this? Thank you.

@Conklikov

funny thing is i ended up trading it for a desert eagle down the line. In hindsight, i wish i kept this. So much better. Desert eagle is nice, but its big and bulky and finish is surprisingly subpar. I ended up getting a taurus raging bull 44 mag, that shoots like a kitten. Soft recoil, it makes a 44 mag feel like 9 mm. And i am much more accurate with extended ranges with it over the toklat. Ruger quality is hard to beat. Since i sold the toklat the price on them jumped up quite a bit, and thats why i looked at the raging bull. Took a chance. we will see how it pays off in the end.

I once wanted to go down the 480 ruger road. The caliber had a lot of pros. The ammo is just so expensive and reloading for it is still pricy. I always feel like ruger is one step at all times from discontinuing the 480 as well. I also really wanted a lever gun in 480 as well. Maybe after ruger bought marlin this could be a possibility and would make me want to get the 480

The Aesthetics of this gun are not pleasing to me. it should have been a full-length extractor shroud. Then it would be one damn fine-looking gun. The 454 has been my favorite round since the early eighties. I love the Alaskan version, very pleasant looking gun. But this one looks like someone slapped a barrel on to that gun.
@Conklikov

I agree with you on that, would love a full shroud, I get what they were trying to do. but i would have preferred it to be just a regular round barrel to the cuts on the side. I originally liked the alaskan more, but like the little extra length barrel and ability to mount a scope.

Wow! Ruger sure made an ugly front end of the barrel. But I do believe, at least from what I've been told, regular Redhawk barrels blew off right where the barrel meets the frame. So the started making the Super Redhawk. Do they started using a shrouded barrel on the regular Redhawk, and it's stronger than the old model Redhawks.

454 is more powerful then 50 AE? Sure bout that?
@shiawasseehobbyfarmer4844
5 жыл бұрын
Jared White basically 100percent sure, the 50 ae was designed as a semi auto round and thus is shorter , most loads are around 300 grains and produce around 1500 ft lbs of energy. The 454 Casull is a born and bred hunting revolver round. Bullets weigh around 250 up to 340 grains and can produce up to 1900 ft lbs of energy. Now there is some more overlap for some of the lighter loads but by and large the 454 has even better sectional density. The 50 ae is a great round but you will always have limitations with a semi auto rd
