Javi teaches us how to hit the flat serve, starting with the basics, and gives his student Alessandra a tennis class about this shot. This class can be used both for beginners and for players who have bad habits in the tennis serve and want to improve it.
In this video, you will see the following chapters and exercises:
0:00 Introduction
1:10 Section One ➡️ How to place your feet for serving
To serve, we stand in a sideways position with the front foot pointing to the net post and the back foot parallel to the baseline. On the ad side we must turn the back foot a little, opening its angle. The shoulders must point to the service box into which we are aiming to serve.
03:53 Exercise 🎾 1: Adjust your feet position on the deuce side
04:21 Exercise 🎾 2: Throw the ball overhand to the correct service box
04:54 Section Two ➡️ Tossing the ball for a flat serve.
To toss the ball well, you must hold it with your non-dominant hand and without squeezing it too much. Lock your elbow so there are no extra movements. Start by preparing in front of the eyes and try to draw a line of descent and a line of rise. This way we toss the ball up as straight as possible and at a good height. The correct height would be one meter above the point of contact with the racket with the dominant arm outstretched.
06:47 Exercise 🎾 3: Toss the ball up with your non-dominant hand and catch it
07:21 Section Three ➡️ How to hold the racket with the correct grip
Hold the racket with the hammer grip - that is the most versatile for any type of serve. This grip makes the shoulder, elbow and wrist more relaxed.
09:58 Exercise 🎾 4: Practice basic flat serve motion from the service line
10:10 Exercise 🎾 5: Try a few serves from the spot at the service line
10:40 Section Four ➡️ Learning to pronate the forearm
What is forearm pronation? Pronation is an inward rotation of the forearm that allows the hand to be positioned upside down. To pronate well, you must keep your wrist straight at first. Separate your index finger from other fingers to lower the tension on your wrist. Rotate your forearm and keep your arm up when finished.
12:09 Exercise 🎾 6: Practice the pronation movement with a light stick
12:57 Exercise 🎾 7: Practice the pronation movement with your racket
13:44 Section Five ➡️ Combining the ball toss and pronation
13:58 Exercise 🎾 8: Try a few serves focusing on pronation and auto-correction
16:15 Section Six ➡️ Serving from the baseline
18:20 Exercise 🎾 9: Practice serves from the baseline with your feet placed closely together
19:56 Exercise 🎾 10: Hit flat serves from a comfortable feet position
