I really appreciate when Oak mentioned how Aang used to have moments when he snapped too, due to the stress of being the Avatar. I've seen a lot of people watch both shows and only ever comment on Korra being irritable but completely forgetting that Aang in book 3 was also very stressed, Katara too.
@ItsAsparageese

I get what you're saying, but Aang had a lot more reason to be snappy with people than Korra virtually ever has, and she's ALWAYS like that, whereas Aang only was when things got really bad. I think criticisms of her are very deserved. She's incredibly samey as a character, pretty much never really lastingly learns anything outside of S4 and even that arc barely changes her in the long run
@nomnom137

@@ItsAsparageese Growing up isolated and with barely any social experiences, it makes sense she acts the way she is. And what do you mean she has no reason for snapping? She just found out that her father and Tenzin were the ones who decided to isolate her without explaining why. I'd be upset to. And are we really gonna ignore the fact that she never had any other fight with Tenzin for the remainder of the series after learning about Wan, or how she does try to be more patient and empathetic in season 3 (e.g. talking to Daw on the bridge) even giving Tenzin advice or how to train the air nation, or sacrificing herself for the Air nation? Agreed. One of the biggest strengths of the ATLA is the ability to show realistic flaws in their characters. Looking back on this years after watching it when it released live, it actually makes sense to me that Korra would "regress". I remember people complaining about her being a dick in the first few episodes, but that's a realistic thing. A person doesn't just go through one big thing and is changed for good permanently, they can still make mistakes and be flawed. I only wish Nickelodeon hadn't financially/creatively hampered TLOK so much... I feel the community would def fundraise to pay for a goodass budget nowadays and would've been interesting to see how it might have played out differently if they weren't limited to Nickelodeon's demands
@ZeallustImmortal

Right? Him not being a parent that treated all his kids equally isnt even a "flaw" when you also consider that he was trying to rebuild his entire race and culture, while still being avatar, while building a new world even for other benders and non benders. Dude had a lot on his plate, arguably more than he had DURING the 100 year war. He also died relatively young, finding the time to do all that is impossible. I think its reasonable to not do every part perfectly.

Add in the fact that he was raised by monks and didn’t really have any parental relationships of his own (Monk Gyatso is the closest thing to a father figure he had) I’d say it makes a lot of sense. His friends either had dead parents, missing parents, or bad parents too

You touched a little bit on it in your discussion that it works for Unalaq's wishes to have Korra be neutral, but it's also entirely false for him to say that the avatar is supposed to be neutral. The avatar's job is to bring BALANCE to the world. Now, obviously, Unalaq thinks that that's what he's doing (or so he says), but he's obviously not. The world of Avatar has made it very clear that aggression of the type Unalaq is showing throws the world OUT of balance, which means Korra actually should be siding with the south, if anything, to stop Unalaq. From a politial and worldbuilding standpoint, S2 really is very interesting, IMO. And it seems like you guys will enjoy that aspect of it a lot too!

One important factor when considering how Aang was as a father, that I wish the show spent more time on, is the fact that Tenzin is the youngest. That means Aang was the last airbender, and then he had one kid, and he's not a bender, so he thinks he's fine, there's still more time. Then he has another child and she's a waterbender and he's starting to worry. Then he finally has a kid and he's an airbender, so at this point he's freaking out thinking there's so much he needs to pass on, so much he needs to teach. I'm surprised he didn't take multiple wives to be honest, because if he died before creating an airbender that's it. What would even happen once he goes through the cycles? Could he have an airbender child when he's reborn in water? What happens when he goes earth then fire and there's no air for him to go in??? The other stuff to consider a bit too is that he was raised in a monk temple where they don't even have parents, so the whole concept is a new thing to him. Remember he was raised by monks away from his parents. His parents are never even a discussion. So him even raising his own children is already him way out of his element.

I've never been on the Legend of Korra hate bandwagon but as we start season 2 I can't help but be reminded of how each season the show was always under threat of being cancelled so they had to come up with some kind of world in balance stakes to have a satisfying finale. The Last Airbender knew how many episodes it would have for most of its run and never strayed from it's narrative goal, and despite ending up shorter than Korra in runtime it never had to struggle with trying to find itself each book. That is primarily the biggest criticism of Korra I personally have.

👋👋Hey guys it took me some time to do some research and a lot of digging but here. Spirit Bending? "In the era before the Avatar, we bent not the elements, but the energy within ourselves. To bend another's energy, your own spirit must be unbendable, or you will be corrupted and destroyed." - The lion turtle teaches Aang about the nature of energy-bending. Energybending[4] is the ability to bend another person's life energy. It predates the four main bending arts, the formation of the four nations, as well as the creation of the Avatar. Before the Avatar came into existence and the separation of the four nations, the lion turtles bent the energy within humans and themselves to grant them the ability to bend one of the four elements. However, after the lion turtles renounced their roles as protectors of mankind, energy bending was no longer used to grant people bending, and the knowledge of energy bending was almost completely lost.

The visuals/animation is a bit iffy in the first half, Unalaq as a villain is kinda blasé especially coming after Amon or even Tarrlok, and frankly Korra's characterization veered her from being socially oblivious with a bit of a temper to a legitimate hothead to the point of being super unlikable. And it's not even just about her with that last point, the way everyone talks and acts feels off, almost contrived just to force conflict and drama between the characters, especially between Korra and Tenzin and Korra and Mako (not to mention Lin being completely wasted to the point of near character assassination with her and Mako's interactions), but Korra flies on such extremes in her character that undoes a lot of the progress season 1 made in maturing her. She gets much better after the Wan episodes and legitimately becomes amazing in season 3, but she, like the whole of Spirits, is a tale of two halves. And the first half really is rough to get through, even if the second has some legitimately great stuff.

there's a reason why many ATLA fan are not really okay with book 2 of LoK, not solely because of how it portrayed Aang as parent nor because of severed connection to past lives. It was actually because of mishandling spirits, you see in ATLA spirits are neutral. No spirit that is inherently evil nor good, if you don't touch them they won't touch you but here on LoK they broke that rule. They are also less mysterious and captivating, they lost the mystical part of spirits ATLA had.

The spirits getting stronger and meddling with humans is explained because the solstice was here, this was also in ATLA with Hei Bei. Korra was there for the spirits festival, celebration of the spirits that takes place during the solstice every year. Unalaq is also there for the festival and the solstice. This things are coincidences, and Unalaq never pretended they were, its literally a festival about the spirits that happens every single year.

Korra annoyed me in season 2 especially the first episodes. I dropped it, then finished it but when they made random airbenders in the next season I just dropped it completely because everything was not fun not exciting anymore… (bloodbending at anytime okay, but the lavabending etc was the last straw for me) but i will watch and finish with you guys😊

Aang was a crummy dad. I can't even imagine leaving any of my kids out of anything they would love to see nor do.
