8MM WEDGE ground clamp OEM part installed on my LA battery part# (620151) 2019 FordTransit cargo van a 13 pt. socket won't grab it. So I have to buy cable cutters and a 6 pt. Which will most likely break the bolt, hence the backup cable cutters. Anyhow With the extra cost of tools I'll let Ford do it, along with a oil & coolant service. There was a time years ago when battery clamps came off easy with a small 7/16" wrench and big flat tip. Now, no matter the make. The line assemblers take an impact and overtorque the clamps. Then take a center punch to the bolt nut. I realize its a deterant bc of all the ECMs and use a trickle charger if necessary. Really though its a pain. I actually purchased an assorment of battery clamps. Some have 8mm bolts on a side plate. Great video.

Your battery cable run would be better to wire from the van to the batteries by one positive to one battery and negative to the other. Still have the connector cables between the two. They will charge and discharge evenly and work together like a chain. I love the builds.

I think you are speaking of series setup, vs this as being a 12v parallel :)
@keepgrowing4439
Жыл бұрын
@@budnixon No. I mean parallel for 12v. You almost have it, just run the positive from the van to the other battery than the negative hooks too. This will charge and discharge batteries together evenly. They way they are now one battery closet to van cables will charge and discharge more that other battery. I worked for Interstate batteries and the RV industry for years. Love the bus stream.

@@keepgrowing4439 ok, I see what you mean now. Always worked this way in the past, and this is exactly how Ford does their factory setup on duals, chain linked in this matter. With smart alternators and battery sensors these days it might not be same as back in the day. I’m the past I did couple dual setups with completely different batteries - worked for me 🤣🤦♂️
@RowanHawkins

@@keepgrowing4439Hooking like that is a bad idea with the new smart alternators. Factory smart alternaors only expect to see one battery off of them. For the last 10 years or so its better to charge a separate seconday battery/ bank off a charge controller designed for that kind of setup. It also allows you to change the battery chemistry on the non-vehicle battery and still you would be able to use it in an emergency. Also if one battery starts failing before the other when they are chained, it will drag the good one down leaving you stuck.

Dual battery setup in parallel? Waste of time. Use a VCR (voltage controlled relay) that separates the batteries when fully charged. That way, one battery is always charged and can't be drained by anything in the car, including the other battery. Or better still. Just use a SuperCapacitor connected to the single battery. Those things kick like a pissed off Mule!

@@budnixon That's kinda how every van is wired nowadays. Whether it's used for camping or work. Even just a Master Switch that you manually switch around, is better than two parallel batteries. If one gets a short because of a dud cell (as they do) then they BOTH don't get drained at the same time and it also highlights when a battery is dyeing.

So you don t need a split charge relay?
@budnixon
10 ай бұрын
This isn’t a split bank, it’s all one single unit, with double capacity just like factory option that one can order from Ford, considering many use CCPs to power their accessories etc, larger bank capacity comes handy.

You got factory CCP option on the drivers seat? One of them has a time cap (stays on for 90min I believe), another hot all the time, but should have a low voltage cutoff to prevent battery drain so vehicle can still start. In any case, I always advise on installing a house battery that you run your accessories off

he ran positive to positive and negative to negative, that puts them in parallel so the amperage increases... positive to negative would be in series, and would make the voltage increase to 24V
