This is why Freespace 2 is one of the most fondly remembered games by those who played it. It was EPIC on a level that few games have managed since.

Freespace 1 and 2 are utterly phenomenal games. No matter how often I beat them I always find myself returning to them after a few months. The gameplay is solid and very fulfilling. 2 took what 1 did and made it even better, a phenomenal feat for a game that was already amazing.

If Interplay had bothered to do *any* advertising or promotion for the game the way they had done for their Descent line of games (including The Great War) it would have moved 20x as many copies, rather than the roughly 20k it sold.

I'd say they were even more so. These days most game devs just can't help but make the enemy a chatty bastard. The Reapers could have been scarier if they didn't talk and weren't explained so much. Part of the reason the Shivan's were so scary was because they were a complete mystery and their traditional form of welcome and farewell was laser beams, and missiles. Oh and they effectively won. They lost one superdestroyer at the cost of both homeworlds and a fleet of ships.

I've always tried to figure out just what happened in this scene since I saw it as a kid. In-game, Command says they've been picking up subspace distortions coming from the Capella star, and the big trigger sparking the evacuation of the Capella system was that the node to Gamma Draconis, where the GTVA encountered the Sathanas first, was a stable node even after they tried to destroy it. Sathanases just kept pouring in, one after another, and Command said "time to gtfo!"It was mostly complete in this final mission when the star went supernova, and the idea that the Shivans had this capacity to destroy stars had me thinking that maybe it was what happened in Gamma Draconis since that system was a nebula, essentially the aftermath of a star (or the beginning of one), a nebula littered with Knossos portals. In addition, I always wondered what happened to the Sathanases that were left behind, like at 1:27, that looked like they shut down while most of the others were able to flee. Did they stay behind to ensure the star's destruction or were their ships simply not up for the task of... whatever it is they did? After all, these ships could be eons old for all we know, who's to say wear-and-tear doesn't exist for the Shivans?

@Rhoadster91 Mysteries of the Shivans... Something that Volition was probably going to answer in Freespace 3 which sadly will never happen due to legal issues regarding ownership of the franchise, Volition created the games yes but they were published and owned by Interplay which went bankrupt about a decade ago and somewhere in that dead companies endless paperwork are the files that show ownership of the franchise which are unobtainable by any means, its quiet sad really.

@ajsknight Volition still exists. They're a development house for THQ. They did Saints Row, Red Faction, and they're working on the Guillermo del Toro game, InSANE. They're also cleared for a Saints Row 3. Trust me, they're one of the biggest game development houses in the industry, and are plenty alive and healthy right now. Though I really REALLY hope they get a jump on Freespace 3, just to make me totally geek out. There's so much of the story still left open!

You bring up an excellent point. I think Freespace inspired Mass Effect. Think about it... Reapers resemble Shivan Sathana Dreadnaughts Reapers and Shivans have the same sort of red patterning They both whipe out organics for new generations of species. Mass Relays act as the exact same story element as Jump Nodes And the Ancients and Protheans have similar roles in the story. Interesting...

@vest816 Yep, the problem here is that the license for the FS series does not belong to THQ but to another publisher, which name I currently forgot. Anyway to get a new FS THQ needs to get this license so that there is nothing in the way for a NEW FS game as I completely agree with you that we all NEED a sequel to the story in order to explain what happened after the destruction of capella as well as what was up with the ancients etc. .

@DurandalThoth By the way to those times of developing this game (1999) Volition was easily on par as a game developer with such a developer giant like Blizzard nowadays but Blizzard nowadays exists and Volition does not and thats the difference but thanks to World of Warcraft and about +10000000 subscribers that pay a monthly fee of 13 bucks to play WoW Blizzard Entertainment will ALWAYS have enough MONEY and thanks to THAT also enough TIME of development for their well-known EPIC games.

@DurandalThoth Don't get me wrong I also like the Source Code Project and loved and played it to death but the ONLY way to have a BIGGER CANON universe new ship types introduced into CANON etc. is via a NEXT Installment in the franchise and this will be only possible via a FreeSpace 3 game ;). However the mods that are out there and the dozens of campaigns are really well made and expand the universe by a big notch but still I think every soul out there wants a trilogy in the FS universe.

The ending was just theorizing about why the Shivans would do that.
@realLuisGiordano
6 жыл бұрын
It was speculated that the shivans acted like a hive, which was somewhat demonstrated after the destruction of the Lucifer when they just lost any kind of coordination, and attacked random objectives for no reason at all. It took them 32 years to return in full force. Like a hive, they must have "a Queen" commanding their fleets, being it a Lucifer-class superdestroyer or a Sathanas juggernaut.
@THEGRUMPTRUCK
6 жыл бұрын
Luis Giordano The Lucifer force was basically just a scouting fleet, hence only having one supermassive ship capable of destroying planets. I still don't think that detonating the capellan star wiped out even a quarter of their whole fleet. What we fought in Freespace 2, even at its worst, the shivans have to be from another galaxy entirely, there's just so many of them.

@anonymus070 You don't want a Freespace 3. The SCP is the true successor to this game in my eyes. The joy of FS 2 is that it was left open ended, which makes for tons of great campaign ideas. Chances are that if a Freespace 3 *was* ever made (which it won't be), it would be a complete and utter disappointment.

@DurandalThoth Nope not really correct. We just need the right company to make a Freespace 3 and I think it would be epic. The two major aspects for making such a masterpiece are TIME for development and MONEY! The ONLY company that has both in excess is Blizzard Entertainment! However chances that they will buy the franchise let alone that they will dare to delve into this genre ... . A worthy can ALWAYS be made you just NEED those two major aspects like I have said above thats all ;).

@MikMoen
9 жыл бұрын
No, but they didn't lose either. The only way to "win" is to exterminate Humanity. This is what the Shivans do. When a species becomes too powerful it upsets the balance of the Galaxy. The Shivans caused the star to go Supernova, destroying the entire system. It wasn't the Sol system but they knew it was a heavily populated so they destroyed it.

Theo Bowie The jump node was collapsed cutting off direct access to the rest of Human settled planets. So it's kinda like "they can't get to us now or at least for a very very long time so we're good." The war didn't really end.
@tbowie614

Michael Moen oh I understand now. Creating a time bomb in space and neutralizing the jump nodes made war even difficult for anybody to continue. What about the vensudans? Do they still have an alliance with humanity? I've the first Freespace but not the second game.
@akigreus9595
9 жыл бұрын
No one won, but far as I can tell, the Vasudans and Humans continue to be allied, the Shivans continue to stick to the destroyed star system, the gates to that system are destroyed and all currently GTVA systems are constantly scanned for new micro jump nodes and no one is allowed to explore unopened gates less the Shivans find the systems again and current consensus is "RUN AND HIDE OH GOD THEY'LL COME BACK EVENTUALLY!"
