Not an expert but this is what has worked for me when it comes to Gel Stain. It is easy to apply, looks great and is a favorite of mine to use. But sometimes it can be a sticky mess. Was it put on when it was very humid? Applied too thickly? Was the second coat put on too soon after the first coat? And one thing I didn’t cover in this video: was the stain old and not well mixed? The answer if it’s too humid is to bring it inside for drier air and/or give it more time to dry. But if you’ve gone a full 24 hours and it is still on the tacky side it might need more help. Oil based stains need an oil-based solvent. So Mineral Spirits AKA White Spirits should do it. You wipe it on, with a lint free cloth, to in essence reactivate the stain to allow you to wipe off the excess stain more easily. You are not going back to the beginning, but you will notice a difference. The results will be a more worn look. That isn’t all bad but if full coverage is what you are looking for, no problem, once the surface is dry again (2 hours or less) reapply a light thin second coat. Also, a heads up if most of it feels fine but some areas are still a little sticky. Those sticky areas may require you to repeat the mineral spirits wipe down and wipe off process. Hope this helps you as it has worked for me.
