Are you stuck in a rut? Me too🙃
In this video, I share some of the shadow work exercises I do to help get out of a rut and back into routine & consistency, I hope it helps you too!
When you get stuck in a rut, it’s often because there’s an invisible wall of unconscious motivations that are in conflict with your conscious goals, and the result is inaction. It happens, it’s ok, but shadow work can actually be a great tool for overcoming these self-sabotaging behaviors and getting back on track quickly.
So, how to get out of a rut?
1. Recognize the influence of your shadow🪞
Whenever you do something that you don’t like that you do, it’s the influence of your shadow. What habits have you fallen into that you’re unhappy with? Sleeping in? Skipping exercise? Scrolling too much? Try to notice these things and then pay attention to the underlying feelings- avoidance, fear, insecurity, shame?
I find journaling is a great tool for this, here’s a video on my shadow work journal routine you can use for this step: • How to use journaling ...
2. Start to replace your unhealthy distractions with neutral distractions💭
This is such an important step in shadow work, as whenever uncomfortable feelings arise, you’ll try to avoid them through distraction. However, not all distractions are the same, and if you’re using unhealthy ones (longterm negative impact- such as binge drinking, reckless behaviors, self-harm, etc) you won’t be able to integrate these suppressed parts of yourself when they come up, and instead end up making the problem worse. Try to identify your unhealthy distractions and replace them bit for bit with neutral (no negative impact) or healthy ones (positive longterm impact), such as watching a movie or going for a walk. Distractions aren’t bad, they can be really helpful for allowing a trigger to pass and then dealing with the issue once you’re more grounded, so try to build up a toolkit of healthier coping mechanisms☁️
3. Level up your undeveloped qualities👯♀️
This is my favorite part, you want to imagine life as a game. As you start to recognize your shadow in step one, and find better ways to deal with the discomfort, you now want to make a plan to level up these shadow qualities in yourself. For example, if you realize you want to be more disciplined, then just like a game, think of “tasks” you can do to level this quality up. You’ll never get out of a rut if you put the expectation on yourself to go from 0 to 100 tomorrow, and you’ll also find a lot of resistance in yourself if you try to do this, so instead develop this quality gradually until it becomes easy. You can do this with anything- discipline, self-trust, fitness, creative skills, etc.
I hope this helps, if you don’t know what I’m talking about with “Shadow Work”, check out my video explaining all you need to know: • What is Shadow Work? A...
