Before we moved, I used an amp switcher to go through my amps and cabs in my studio for recording. I would love flipping through my Mesa Boogie dual rectifier, my Hughes and kettner tm36, my krabk rev series 1 original, and my peavey 6505+, as well as my or15. But something’s changed this year. And last year as well. So last year I rebuilt my entire pedalboard. I used to use a pedalboard as an addition to my amp. So noise gate, overdrive, delay, chorus. That way any time I switched amps I had a board for my distorted or clean tones. But I started watching shows like this and jhs pedal show, and I wanted to experiment with getting all my tone from pedals. I rebuilt my entire board with some crazy cool gain stages. I noticed my orange or15 was my cleanest amp, very robust and thick midrange. It took pedals so well. That was last year. This year? We moved to a two bedroom and all my amps are in the closet. Except for the or15, which is run clean with a little bit of gain and runs all my 17 pedals. For gain, I start with the mxr Timmy which is always on. That goes into my mxr phase 90 for fun, and the gain continues with my animals fishing is as fun as fuzz which is a Soviet big muff. Then a nux fet boost (amazing pedal please buy one it’s only $35), which pushes my fuzz into crazy places. But then there’s a screaming blues set up as a deep distortion, and then a blues driver as a creamy overdrive. Then there’s a Wawa ds1 as either full rhythm distortion or a lead, all depends. Also a big muff nano. All of those gain pedals sound so good and clean with zero noise on my or15. Not to mention all the reverb and delays with zero effects loop. I just went straight in, honestly this has changed my playing and my writing. All because I chose the or15 as my amp. I said “no matter what I build this amp will be my foundation.” Solid.

As a player of an OR15 I really enjoyed this episode. You highlighted all the the issues I’ve found with the amp over the years that I’ve had it. It’s a shame I can’t put a picture up of my settings but I had to roll off the preamp gain. The fizz was too much for my ears! I’m now pushing the output more to the edge of breakup and because I have an OX I’m not going deaf. I also decided to run the Wampler Dual Fusion as my overdrive. I’m able to play much more with the dynamics of the guitar to get the tone I want. At the end of the day I don’t think this amp will be a keeper for me. But I’ve had it 3 years and it’s only now I’m getting the best out of it. I’ve learnt to be persistent in getting good tone!
@MurrayWilliams
6 жыл бұрын
The best part about this video is watching you guys find a good tone in an amp. It’s reassuring to see you find bad tones but then stick with it and find the good tones. I’m learning a lot here. Usually, if I plug into an amp and it’s too overdriven or I don’t like the tone immediately I decide it’s a bad amp... I’m reevaluating that.
@justinneafsey5990
6 жыл бұрын
Murray Williams yeah man most amps are more versatile than you think. Its rare you plug into an amp and it sounds amazing right away unless someone else messed with it before you. Anyways i always spend some time with an amp before deciding thumbs up or down. But im with you i learn alot from this show. Love it.
@MurrayWilliams
6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it seems pretty obvious now ... I’ve always been a pedal guy so a way overdriven amp sent me running. But even in an amp that wants to drive immediately there’s useable tone for us pedal heads.

Thanks for the shows, you guys are great! I see the DB meter was set for C weighting. That's generally used for measuring machinery (like power tools) where it is flat across the full frequency spectrum which will result in a higher DB reading. "A" weighting is more tuned to what the human ear hears and it's generally what we sound engineer's use for PA system sound measurements etc.... The DB measurements in the room may sound more accurate to what you're hearing if you switch it from C to A. Technically speaking: The "A" weighted sound level discriminates against low frequencies, in a manner similar to the response of the ear. In this setting, the meter primarily measures in the 500 to 10,000 Hz range. It is the weighting scale most commonly used for OSHA and DEQ regulatory measurements. The "C" weighted sound level does not discriminate against low frequencies and measures uniformly over the frequency range of 30 to 10,000 Hz. This weighting scale is useful for monitoring sources such as engines, explosions, and machinery. The sound levels measured with these two weightings have units of "dBA" and "dBC", respectively.

I’ve tried a few things with my OR15. 1.Clean pedal platform with a Timmy, surprisingly good. 2. Setting the amp gain around 11:00 for crunch and riding the volume knob. It can get a bit ratty, but when it’s dialed in, it rawks

Have a Micro Dark and can confirm it behaves like this exactly. I'm thinking of swapping tubes in the preamp to see if I can get breakup a little further up the gain knob so I don't have to ride the volume quite so much and get a little more room for pedals. Thinking a vintage 12au7 or 5751. Hopefully it tames it a little bit.

@SeanPierceJohnson
6 жыл бұрын
M A sure do! If you’re using the OR15 with a nice amount of Gain from the amp, go Fuzz Face. Sits nicely on top of some grit. Muffs tend to want to take over the whole tone and not work with lots f other dirt. It’s fine to stack a Muff with a light amount of grit (like J Mascis using a Muff into a Tube Screamer) but a muff on top of a raging amp is usually out of control. I like the OR15 with the Fuzz on the Keeley Monterey myself
@1HYB

Please get Matt Pike, it'd be one of the best episodes ever! He runs 2 different pedalboards into 2 orange amps with a a third one running dry. The guy is an absolutely genius tone sculptor and if he clicks on the right pedal your mind might just be blown... back in the 90s when SLEEP made dopesmoker, it took a while for the public to catch on but as time went on people began to realise that this slow, grinding and repetitive fuzzed out metal - influenced record has an undeniable ability to draw its listeners into hypnagogic states where one may be able to see inside the workings of their inner psyche... You see, Matt Pike uses these orange amps and fuzz boxes to help us see the light and embrace the spiritual side of all music, add a new layer of depth to our artistry and hopefully someone somewhere might find god in one of your songs. Music is a religion after all, at least it is mine. Nobody gets killed, everyone's fulfilled and good times are had 😝😝😝😝

Love the Demo of the OR15. It's got some great rock tones - thinking it would be better matched with the Vintage 30 speaker which might better match the top end harmonics from this amp. Finding some love for these lower wattage amps. I just picked up a Marshall Mini Jubilee - really loving the variety of tone, sensitivity and articulation. Play it with my ShawBucker Strat and love the tones from all three pickups in all 5 positions. Really suprised how great it sounds clean and how well it takes pedals. My Deluxe Reverb might be in trouble :).

Well, considering that Orange matches their amps w/V30s, you'd be right. Their cabs and combos usually ship loaded w/ V30s. I run a Tiny Terror through both a 4x12 straight w/ 25w Greenbacks and a 1x12 with a V30 - both are fantastic with humbuckers, especially for a head you can find in like-new condition for $300 all over the place.

Thanks for another great show. I agree with Mick: Orange amps sound much better with humbuckers than with single coils. I already mentioned it in a response to another comment, but I'd like to say it again: could you please bring in the Marshall Origin and the Mini Jubilee 2525? Dominic von Riedemann I have the AD30HTC and the sound of a Les Paul into that is just epic. I recently tried a 59 Reissue into an OR15 in a store and that was amazing too!! I would also say that a Tele into the AD30 sounds superb too, so I’m not sure it’s just a single coil/humbucker issue. Personally I think it’s something to do with frequency response and mid range cos I would agree that a Strat or Jag/Jazzmaster doesn’t sound anywhere near as good into the amp but a Tele sounds great. This is probably one of the reasons I don’t get on with Strats to be honest. 🤷🏼♂️

I like that amp with my chisel pickups. Chisel cleaning up so nicely the distortion from OR15. Clean tones and dirt can be controlled nicely from the guitar's volume knob and my fingers....

The OR15 is a sweet little amp, but I think the Tiny Terror is better value for the money, and the Rockerverb 50 just blows both of them out of the water, RV50 one of the best amps I've ever played.

I've been waiting for this video! You guys should definitely get an Orange amp with more power like a Rockerverb 50/100 or AD30. Played a Rockerverb 50 watt through a Marshall 4x12 for the first time the other day and man!!! it sounded immense!

I didnt like a tubescreamer for a long time, i should say didnt get or understand their way of function as to push a cranked amp into dam that sounds good mode. Ala older fender well now iv got 2 tubescreamers, jus bcause i can. Lol ,,learned it on that pedal show from the UK. Actually learned quite a bit from u guys, very useable info. THANK U,, very much !

Quite right on using the G 12 H30. Tim Sult of Clutch uses (or used) that combination with a P90 pick up to make the first album. Which is essential for any orangeheaded user of Orange heads.

Awesome video! when you guys were doing the Orange TT; I kept screaming: Dime the master volume. That's these small orange amps sound best/most open. keep it up gang. I'm addicted to your channel.

I think Orange amps are one of those that you either really like or you really don't for most people. There's just something about it's overdrive sound, it's definitely unique. I also think part of what really makes the Orange sound is their cabinets, they just sound darker and deeper than a Marshall cab with the same speakers. They're great at what they do, it's a cool sound but it's not for me.

It’s certainly a unique sound Mike. Much better to be a love it / hate it sound rather than something vanilla and in the middle I reckon. Mick here. :0)

Hi guys, This has nothing to do with Orange, although I do sometimes wet/dry my tiny terror with my AC15. I must have been babbling too much about how great it is so for my birthday I finally got my D&M drive! It sits between my Dark Side & Slide Rig. Love the show! I've learned a ton from you guys. Oh, and so far I have three shirts. BTW this birthday I turned 65. Confuses the hell out of them when I hit the grocery store in a TPS shirt and my Dropkick Murphys hat. Keep it up guys! Tony

We love you Tony, and not just because you buy our stuff. But we love you for that too! Congrats on the six-five - now you’re properly rock’n’roll! We hope you love that D&M Drive as much as we do. Thank you for watching and a giant HAPPY BIRTHDAY from us. :0)

Hey guys I’m new here and I’ve never ever made a comment on any of your videos before (including just now on some other video you did about singing harmony with a particular amplifier behind you Dan…). Please consider doing a video about the Orange AD30. No effects loop! I think it might be the ultimate Orange. There’s a picture of Prince standing in front of about 200 of them out there in the Google images world. Not that he had any clue what he was doing or anything. The book of orange says that the tiny terror the AD30 and the Rocker 30 all had the same kind of output transformer. Of course the OR15 came out after that book uses the same transformers as the tiny terror. No doubt orange put their best foot forward with those amplifiers. You might as well do the ultimate one. Thanks in advance. For doing the video this coming week. No hurry. In two weeks you will be so glad that you had done it last week.

The OCD into the Orange was the tone of the day. Mick was on one, though, playing a bit of "Time Out", mentioning Doom Metal, and also shouting out Del Amitri. Thoroughly enjoyable.

This amp sounds like it has a bright cap. If it does, I'd love to hear it without one. I bet it would come alive for pedals at that point.

Hi guys! Did you notice that with pedals on this Orange all the tone/eq knobs were almost always set near the lowest or highest setting? Dan mentioned it when he was trying to get a Klone sound from the Melody. In my experience normally the tone knobs are set near the middle, so I found it interesting and worth mentioning! Cheers, TPS is my fav show.

Always cool to see different amps on the show. You mentioned maybe doing Blackstar in the future. It would also be super cool to see a Hiwatt (or Hiwatt type amp) if you could get your hands on one. Love the old Page/Gilmour tones and have never had the chance to play one. Anyway, always dig the show. Thanks for all you guys do. I've learned so much watching. Cheers!

We really want a Hiwatt, Tyler and moves are afoot to make that happen. There’s a weird ownership issue with the brand globally so if that ever gets sorted, we’ll get one.

Guys, I’d love to see an Orange AD30 in an episode. It would be really helpful to see you two out one through its paces, finding the cleans, the filth, and all useful points between. Love the show!

What I got from this video is that I should never ever get rid of my OCD. The thought entered my mind a few weeks back and lingered.... but my God does it sound great! The OR15 was ok, just not the sound I’m after. I’ve been happy with the Dr. Z Z-28 1x10 with gold for over 6 years now. Great grab and go brown style 2x6V6 style amp. Loved this episode. Got to learn some more about an amp company I’m unfamiliar with.

Another great show guys, even if it was late Friday, end of the week tired with too much pizza and wine. By the way beer goes with pizza not wine LOL. I am looking forward to seeing your show from your new location. You have made mention of the TPS Band on several occasions and I am hoping to see guitar/amp/pedal combinations presented in the context of a full band. So many times we work up what we think is a great sound and take it to band rehearsal and find that it doesn't work with the rest of the band playing. Maybe some shows with the full band demonstrating this concept. Once again great show, thanks.

Cheers Joshua. Dan and I were taken aback a little bit at first when complete strangers would come up to us and just chat like old friends. We’d usually all realise pretty quickly that regular viewers feel like they know us. Which of course they do! Now we just kinda take it as read. It’s awesome! To have so many friends in the world. It’s too cool - like a big family! We save a hug for you man!

Absolutely. BTW - My 4 year old son loves to "watch guitar" sometimes at bedtime. He really likes "Stevie" SRV, you guys and a few others. So far he has good taste for music. I've shown him some videos he doesn't like, which is funny that even at 4 he has a strong opinion. So we normally do a short segment of TPS, prayer time and bed. I'm blessed.
