My 1st time visiting and filming at Swansea on the South Wales Main Line, Swan Line and also the West Wales Line featuring Great Western Railway and Transport For Wales services.
Also as an extra feature at the end of this video will see 2 5 car Class 800/0 IETs coupling together to form a 10 car set for the rest of it's Journey to London Paddington having one set being from Pembroke Dock and the other being from Swansea Maliphant IEP Depot.
Swansea station is the 4th busiest station in Wales opened as Swansea High Street on June 19th 1850 by the South Wales Railway. It was merged with the Great Western Railway in 1863.
The station was renamed Swansea in 1963
All 4 platforms are used for terminating services or reversing services with most Great Western Railway services terminatng from London Paddington with a few services a day being extended to Carmarthen or Pembroke Dock.
Today formations on GWR are formed of 9 car Class 800/3s or 802/1s or 10 car formed of 2 5 car sets of 800/0s and 802/0s which divide here. Most cases if in 10 car formation of an IET is that the rear 5 car set would divide here via platform 2 and continue on whilst the other proceed to nearby Maliphant IEP Depot.
Swansea's Maliphant IEP Depot was expanded in 2014 for use for stabling IETs during although in fact was used for stabling HSTs in the last years in service on GWR until May 18th 2019.
Although Overhead Gantries have been fitted however after controversially the electrification was scaled to Cardiff Central in 2017 it's likely electric trains reaching Swansea may not be realised.
Transport For Wales which provide the services along the West Wales Line to Carmarthen, Pembroke Dock as well as Fishguard Harbour which was served by GWR until 2003. Other services via the South Wales Main Line or the Swanline for local stopping services to Cardiff Central and then beyond to Abergavenny, Gloucester etc.
