I'm doing this exact treatment too on my entire face and a small bald spot. I'm fair skinned, 62, and have spent a lot of my waking life in sun (high altitude). Finished the 4 day application 3 days ago, which was easy and painless. Fast forward to day 7 and things get interesting. My face is a blotchy mess, minor pain/itching, and a portion of my lower lip has ulcerated. Some areas are starting to peel, but it seems like another week or so is needed to get through the worst of it. I'll update in a week. For now, I think I made the right decision to go this route and not the 30 day Flourouracil treatment that my Dr initially prescribed.

Great video, thanks. I just completed the program and today is day number 12. My response was more intense. I treated my entire face, scalp where bald, ears ,lips and top of hands. The scalp and hands did not react much (I have used Efudex on scalp in past with minimal reaction but with decrease in keratoses. My face reaction was with significant redness with eventual outer skin slough at day 10. Most of the areas of concern were removed. My lower lip ulcerated and is still healing. I had thought there would only be a small spot to react on the lip but 90% of it did. The lower lip is much more prone to skin cancer due to the sun rays more directly hitting it as opposed to the upper. Overall I feel I will be satisfied (as soon as my lip is no longer raw!). This treatment is much better for a full face than 5%Efudex for 2 to 4 weeks. This program works from “the inside out” with an intense immune response. Straight Efudex does not work as well since it needs longer and works from the outside in ( with ulceration most common). Also 4 days of treatment is easier than 2 to 4 weeks. I would recommend. It was first published in 2015.

Great!! Don't be too surprised if your dermatologist isn't initially very supportive. This is treatment is likely to be news to her and you might need to print out the research article to support your case. Hopefully, she'll give you a prescription for Calcipotriene. My derm, who is thought to be the best in the area, wasn't familiar with this treatment, but was receptive to my being his guinea pig. If she's resistant, maybe that's the approach to persuade her.

I am very intrigued by this video and testimony since just a few days ago my dermatologist was suggesting the longer form of treatment mentioned by the person in the video. In exploring the form of treatment suggested by the dermatologist, I was completely turned off by the utube videos available from other participants experiences of this longer form of treatment and possible complications, discomfort, and more limited lifestyle due to its effects on a person. I fully intend to explore this Harvard version of treatment with my dermatologist. I am very thankful to this person who did this video and shared his experience is such a nicely done video and commentary. This offers others a possible less excruciating form of treatment for actinic keratosis.

Very few dermatologists are currently aware of this Harvard breakthrough. My dermatologist wasn't until I brought it to his attention. He is now very interested and I am somewhat serving as his guinea pig. My suspicion is that the docs won't find out about this fabulously improved treatment approach until Big Pharma finds a way to make money on it. The creams that this therapy uses are both generic and cheap. Until it went generic, Big Pharma was selling us fluorouracil to treat AK as the cream ,Efudex, and charging us over $200/tube for it!!

One special thing that I've discovered about this treatment is that, with the addition of calcipotriene, the immune system in the skin is activated. The author of the Harvard study says this: "Shadmehr Demehri of the MGH Center for Cancer Immunology and the Cutaneous Biology Research Center (CBRC), senior author of the report. “But more importantly, the unprecedented ability of this combination therapy to directly activate the adaptive immune system against skin cancer precursors holds great promise to establish an immune memory within treated skin capable of preventing future cancer development." Even many weeks after my treatment, I still have deep rooted keratosis lesions dying and coming to the surface to be sloughed off. As the skin's now activated immune system finds AK, the lesion rises to the surface as a bump on the skin, then turns black, and then gets sloughed off. Because the body's immune system now recognizes AK as foreign, I'm thinking that this protocol may produce a permanent ridding of AK.

The one downside to this treatment for me has been the short duration benefit. It's all good for 9-12 months but then they come back. I've done the treatment every year, 5 times now. I still like the idea much better than being out of commision for 4-6 weeks, I just wished it would last longer. The best tip I can offer is not to use ANYTHING on your face to help with the pain. I tried every cream, lotion, ointment, and sav available and only made it burn MUCH worse, then cleaning off the failed lotion attempts was very painful. I saw a recommendation from one doctor to only use cold compresses, (wet washcloth) to cool as needed, that's all I use now!

I really like how the additional 2 days made the difference. I never had any pain using the compounded med so perhaps if you are using 2 seperate medications and mixing yourself that has caused a different result if not the correct portions? let me know what you think

Very glad to hear that your treatment wasn't bad. One thing that probably helped was that your doctor only had you do it for 14 days instead of the usual 21 days. I'm surprised that your insurance doesn't cover calcipotriene cream. It's a heavily used treatment for psoriasis and, like fluoroucil, is old enough to have gone generic. When my dermatologist prescribed it, I only paid a $10 copay for calcipotriene. It was selling on Ebay for $40-50/tube.

Yes. Without the blessings of Big Pharma, most doctors feel very uncomfortable with new treatment approaches, even those treatments that are shown to be more effective by high quality research. I know this because I was married to a doctor for years. Also, your sister is right. Most doctors strongly resist alternative suggestions by patients. Every time I saw my dermatologist, he would freeze the lesions that he saw, but they all came back within a few weeks. This Harvard treatment works beautifully, painlessly, and appear at this point to be permanent. My skin now looks and feels better than it has in many years. Susan, before you embark on the nightmare that your doctor is recommending, do this Harvard treatment. Your doctor will happily prescribe fluorouracil, but you'll probably have to buy the calcipotriene on your own. Fortunately, you can buy a tube on Ebay. I know you'll find in a few days that you can get excellent resolving of the AK lesions without undergoing three weeks of the agony and trauma of fluorouracil alone.

Thanks for this video. I’ve been getting spots frozen for a few years and have also tried photodynamic therapy with little success. I’ve been dreading the efudex treatment and it’s nearly impossible for me to get several weeks off of work to go through it. I came across your video, did some research and brought it up with my dermatologist. He said he had heard of it but had not used it with any of his patients to this point. I volunteered to be his guinea pig. He was receptive and did prescribe both creams for me. I just completed day 3. At this point, I feel like I have a bad sunburn and some spots are turning pretty red. It really isn’t bad at all, at this point. It seems much worse after I wash my face, as my skin gets extremely dry. Reapplying the creams actually makes it feel a little better, so I’m guessing it might be uncomfortable after I stop treatment. I’m excited to see what happens after day 4. From your video, it looks like that’s when the magic happens. I’ll post an update in a couple weeks and let you know how I made out. Thanks again for posting this.

Lori Deal - yes you can certainly use it on arms, legs and chest, however for those areas I would add one more day (two more applications). My face only needs 4 days- it’s all red now with a few red blotches that looks like severe acne (good thing). It really doesn’t look bad from a distance and today’s my last day. Ask your dermatologist for a prescription for .005% calcipotriene solution. The solution is cheaper than the cream and same active ingredient. I mix the calcipotriene solution together with the efudex cream in equal portions (maybe slightly less solution). I plan to use this on my arms and legs next. Don’t let your lazy dermatologist cheat you out of this method- it’s so much better and the efficacy has been proven better in double blind studies.

A number of years ago I had to use straight Efudix (that's the spelling in Australia) on my head. I lasted to the 17th day. Very painful and extremely uncomfortable for at least three weeks after completion. However the doctor said it did work. Three years later (about 2-3 years ago) I had the same problem and the skin doctor said they used a new treatment - Efudix & Daivobet for 4-7 days. A lot less painful and the short time period was certainly an advantage. And it worked quite well. I have just used the same treatment on the front part of my head (literally just finished treatment). My head certainly has a burning sensation but nothing like the straight efudix. I will be interested to see how long it is effective for. However I'll take the four days rather than the 21 days, even if it doesn't last as long.

It's hard to me to get 2 weeks off at one time, so I want to try applying it a few days then take a week off? I'm in sales so don't want to go to work looking scary.

If your doc was prescribing the 3-week fluorouracil only treatment, you should be scared. It is brutal and socially disturbing for a long time. Not only is the treatment phase long and awful to look at, but it's followed by a long healing that is, also, quite long and unsightly. This will vary, of course, but this 4-day regime has a few days of a sun burn look followed by by a few days of healing that involves peeling. The two or three days of peeling is unattractive, but is painless and is shortly completed. The whole process from the start of treatment to back to smooth skin is from a week to a week and a half. Hope this helps.

great vid and well done for uploading.. i am starting this treatment next week and i do have one question you may be able to help with... how much cream do you put on your face each application?? i understand its a 50/50 mix but what are the quantities??? is a thin layer ok or is a larger amount preferable...thankyou

Glad to hear that you're going to go this route. The addition of calcipotriene seems to create a long term immune response in the skin against keratosis. Just the past couple of weeks I had two brown keratosis spots come up on my forearm, get thickened, and then the immune system destroyed them completely. Wiped them out. I don't think you'll find the amount to apply to be a problem. It seems that when you apply it, you will feel when it's about right. Not too thin or too thick.

No. My doctor had not heard about the 4-Day Harvard protocol. He had advised the 3-week Efudex nightmare for me. However, after watching all the awful KZitem videos on this treatment, I started aggressively researching. I have a Ph.D.; so doubting authority and doing research homework comes naturally to me. I was excited to discover this 4-Day treatment regime and brought it to my doctor's attention. He was interested and supportive and prescribed the Calcipotriene for me. He wanted me to keep him informed. I think my doc is unique in this regard. I'm afraid most docs will strongly resist any approach that they don't initiate and you will find that pursuing it on your own is your only option. Yes. The procedure is to mix both creams 50/50. I am very sorry that you weren't able to discover this short and much easier protocol before embarking on the standard 21 Day program. However, it seems that you are almost at the end. Hopefully, your recovery will not be too long and difficult.

I used Efudix on my forehead 20 years ago, and the results after a 3 week course were great. Last year I commenced using Efudix on my chest and after about 3 days the reaction was so bad with weeping sores, I had to stop. It was impossible to continue as the wounds were so weepy it was impossible to apply the cream. In fact I had so much fluid under my skin it looked like I had "man boobs!" I stopped the cream and I healed nicely. A few days ago I started treating a very small area on the bridge of my nose, and once again after 3 days it is swollen and seeping so badly I cannot apply any more Efudix. I'm going to skip a couple of days until the weeping stops and maybe just apply it once a day, instead of twice. I'm just wondering if anybody else has had this sort of reaction after only 3 days?

Instead of the very long and painful Efudex only approach, why not try this 4-day Harvard treatment? I, also, used the 4-day Harvard treatment on my chest and shoulders without all the lengthy trauma of Efudex only and got rid of my AK. I'd stop application and let the wounds from Efudex only fully heal. Then, if there are still AK, use this approach.

@@psyched1231 Yeah, I'm going to book a doctors appointment today and ask him for a script. But I'll keep going with just the Efudix in the meantime, as it's at the ulceration stage anyway so I might as well finish. I figure just a few more days, then I'll let it heal and maybe try the Harvard treatment in the new year and see if anything else comes up?

Yes, exactly. Put the mixture on 2 times every day for 4 days. That's it. I don't know what you mean by a 3 month period. You only do the 4 day regime once.

Hi there...went to get my script today only to be told that Calcipotriol / Dovenex cream has been discontinued in Australian chemists...it has been replaced by a Calcipotriol / Betamethasone Corticosteriod gel .. which is basically a mixed gel with steroid to help with inflamation etc....do you think this mix will be ok ...or should i chase down a pure Calcipotriol cream online somewhere...thanks for your videos.
@psyched1231

Calcipotriene is a man-made vitamin D3 cream. It seems to be what's responsible for initiating the immune response to the AK. I would see if you can chase down calcipotriol. I wouldn't count on that replacement to deliver the needed effect.

Question for anyone: I asked my dermatologist for this; he had never heard of it. He agreed. I have yet to get the 2 prescripts. He said," We like for patients to do it for a week." But you all say 4 days. Since he's not familiar with the new protocol, should I just do 4 days? (I'm doing my lower lip.) What do you think?

That's wonderful that your doc gave you the prescriptions even though he wasn't up on this treatment. I would suggest that you follow his directions and do the 5 days. It won't hurt you at all and will keep him happy with the protocol.

I am almost all healed now, BUT in retrospect, I may not have gone the full 7 days....maybe 5. I was a mess-----lip got infected. DR. prescribed antibiotic and steroid, etc. It took a little over 3 weeks for it all to get better. It really was bad. BUT, would I use the combination again? Yes. Even though I had a tuff time recovering, I still believe it's the better route to go. Just so glad it's over!!

Price vs Efudex?
@psyched1231
5 жыл бұрын
Fluorouracil is the generic version of Efudex. I understand that Big Pharma is charging us over $200/tube for Efudex. However, I only paid the $10/tube copay for the generic fluorouracil. You shouldn't have any trouble getting a generic fluoroucil prescription from your doctor. If you can get your doctor on board with the Harvard protocol and will prescribe calcipotriene, it is generic and will only cost you a small copay with your insurance. If your doc won't prescribe calcipotriene, you can buy it on Ebay for around $50/tube.

Bob, a few months ago there were several sellers on Ebay for calcipotriene. I bought some there. However, it looks like Ebay removed them. It is prescription cream. The most convenient way would be to convince your doctor to prescribe it. However, most docs aren't aware of the Harvard protocol and will only prescribe fluoroucil. You might try showing your doc the studies. If your doc still balks, look into foreign pharmacies? Calcipotriene is really just a man made vitamin D-3 cream. I think regular, natural Vitamin D-3 cream that you can buy from Amazon, Walmart, etc. might work just as well. Probably, the only reason docs and researchers use a man made vitamin D analog instead of the real thing is that big pharma can only make money on medicine that they can patent. They can't patent vitamin D. With docs who dig in their heels, using vitamin D-3 cream might be a route to go.

Very glad to hear that. You'll love this protocol! It works perfectly, fast, and virtually pain free. After it removed all the keratosis on my face, I applied the 4-Day regime to keratosis on my chest and shoulders. Totally removed all lesions. I predict that when your nurse sees your results, their practice will change.
